It is with great pleasure that I extend my warm greetings to all Sri Lankans residing in Australia on the occasion of the 78th Anniversary of the Independence of Sri Lanka.
As we commemorate this significant milestone in our nation’s history, we pay heartfelt tribute to the Independence Leaders who struggled and sacrificed to secure our independence from colonial rule. We also remember with deep respect those who, in more recent times, have given their lives in service of safeguarding the sovereignty, unity and dignity of our country.
This year’s Independence Day is observed at a time when Sri Lanka has faced immense challenges, including the severe impact of the recent Cyclone Ditwah, which caused widespread hardship and suffering to many of our fellow citizens. In the face of such adversity, the resilience and courage of the Sri Lankan people continue to shine, reminding us of the true spirit of our nation.
Sri Lanka stands at a decisive juncture. Efforts are ongoing to promote reconciliation, rebuild the country and maintain peace and stability for the long-term prosperity of Sri Lanka and its people.
This is an opportune moment for all Sri Lankans, both at home and abroad, to unite. As members of the Sri Lankan community in Australia, you have a special role to play in extending support and assistance to
the rebuilding of our beloved Sri Lanka.
May this Independence Day inspire renewed hope, unity and a shared determination to work together for a better future for our motherland.

Yasoja Gunasekera
High Commissioner for Sri Lanka in Australia
