Nelligala Temple, also known as the Nelligala International Buddhist Center, stands as a serene sanctuary atop a hill in the Kandy District of Sri Lanka. A modern marvel, this temple was erected in 2015, drawing locals and travelers alike with its striking architecture and breathtaking vistas. One notable addition to its allure is the newly erected Sumana Saman Statue, which has sparked considerable attention.

The temple is perched near the small town of Muruthalawa, with its conception and design inspired by the vision of Rev. Wathurakumbure Dhammarathna Thero. Notably, the ongoing project of Kuragala, guided by Dhammarathna Thero, further enriches the spiritual landscape of the area. What was once dense forest land has now been transformed into an International Buddhist center and a flourishing tourist destination.

Reaching Nelligala Temple offers multiple routes for travelers. Those originating from Kandy City can opt for the Gannoruwa route, passing through Muruthalawa town. Alternatively, travelers from the Colombo side can take the Pilimathalawa or Kiribathkumbura route, which converge at Muruthalawa town, leading them to the temple via the Kurugama Tea Factory junction.

Upon arrival, visitors are greeted by the temple’s impressive structures and its scenic surroundings. The towering Buddha statues, resplendent in gold, command reverence, while the recently completed stupa stands tall at 75 feet. With relics of Lord Buddha and the Arahats enshrined within, the temple holds profound significance for Buddhists.

Situated at an elevation of approximately 700 meters above sea level, the temple boasts modern architectural designs, diverging from traditional temple structures. Spanning across acres of land, the temple offers ample space for gatherings and events.

Of notable mention is the Sumana Saman Statue, unveiled in December 2020. Depicting Lord Sumana Saman and his revered white elephant, the statue’s positioning towards the Sri Pada Mountain holds deep spiritual symbolism.

Visitors are treated to panoramic views from the temple’s vantage point, offering vistas of the Kandy District and the central highlands. Prominent peaks such as Hanthana, Alagalla, and Sri Padaya adorn the horizon, providing a mesmerizing backdrop for sunrise and sunset views, albeit with occasional mist during rainy days.

Personal experiences at Nelligala Temple vary, with some encountering its serene beauty amidst rain, while others bask in the brilliance of a bright morning for photography or celebratory occasions like weddings. Travelers are advised to plan their visits, considering peak times, such as Poya days, and ensuring respectful attire and behavior due to the site’s religious significance.

Nelligala Temple transcends being merely a tourist attraction, serving as a spiritual haven and cultural hub. Its commitment to community outreach, environmental sustainability, and the preservation of Buddhist teachings make it not only a destination but a beacon of harmony and enlightenment.
