{PeteriteNET:363} NEARING THE CLOSING OF THE CENTENARY YEAR

Pre-Seventies Peterites

Yesterday, being the 18th of October, we completed nine months of the centenary year of the College beloved to us all Peterites young and old and in three months, on 18th January 2023 the centenary year will come to a close.

As Chief Editor of the Centenary Publication (Coffee Table Book), I am deeply conscious of the many photographs that could not be published in same due to space constraints and believe it would be a pity if the many Peterites out there should not see them. Perhaps some may even wish to have them saved for posterity in private albums of their own.

Having given much thought to this need particularly of Old Peterites, I have decided to publish all photos available with me in a series of posts through these three months leading up to the closing of the Centenary year. These will also include some photos which are already published but to have all photos in separately categorised posts I believe, is better than editing them out.

Let me also appeal to anyone who has photographs which could be added to this collection to do so.

While most of these photographs are from Old Magazines of College and private collections, I would like to thank those who have shared these photos with me and publish them with their permission.

The first batch of photos to be published are the reverend personages responsible for seeing the need for a private Boys School in the south of Colombo and executing the ideas.

The first photos will be of the ecclesiastical hierarchy of the year 1922 in which two Popes served as the head of the Catholic Church.

   –

The incumbent Pope when St. Peter’s began as St. Joseph’s College, Colombo South was His Holiness,   . Sadly he passed away on 22nd January 1922, a mere four days after the opening ceremony was held. The Pope who presided over the affairs of the Catholic Church during a major part of the College’s early years was His Holiness, Pope Pius XI (6th February 1922 – 10th February 1939).

  –

As mentioned in almost every document published about the history of St. Peter’s College, Colombo, the Archbishop of Colombo at the time was  . .  () . Anthony House at St. Peter’s is named after him.

Let’s keep the flag unfurled.
