Pieter Keuneman’s 105th birth anniversary today

The 105th birth anniversary of former Minister of Housing and Local Governemnt Pieter Keuneman will be held today at his statue opposite the Elphinstone Theatre, Colombo 10. Pieter Gerald Bartholomeusz Keuneman who was born on October 3, 1917 is one of the founding members of the Sri Lanka Communist Party who represented Central Colombo electorate in Parliament from 1947-1977.Colombo Mayor Rosy Senanayake will garland the statue.

Education Minister Susil Premajayantha, former Minister DEW Gunasekera, former Colombo Mayor A.H.M. Fowzie, Deputy Mayor Mohammed Iqbal and senior Communist Party of Sri Lanka officials will participate.

Pieter Keuneman was born to a family of Dutch descendants and his father Justice A.E Keuneman, who was a Puisne Judge of the Supreme Court provided him with a chance of studying at Cambridge. He was the Second Sri Lankan who became the president of the Cambridge Union after Sir James Pieris in 1877.
