Puthandu, also known as Tamil New Year, is a vibrant celebration deeply rooted in Tamil culture, marking the beginning of a new year according to the Tamil calendar.

Central to Puthandu is the concept of renewal and rejuvenation. Families come together to clean their homes, adorn them with intricate kolam (rangoli) designs, and prepare elaborate feasts symbolizing prosperity and abundance. The exchange of
gifts and sweets among loved ones strengthens familial bonds and fosters a sense of community cohesion.

Puthandu is also steeped in spiritual significance, with many Tamils visiting temples to seek blessings for the year ahead. Special prayers are offered to deities, and traditional rituals are performed to invoke divine favour and ensure a harmonious beginning to the new year.

Cultural performances such as music, dance, and theatrical presentations are also integral to Puthandu festivities, showcasing the rich artistic heritage of the Tamil people. These expressions of creativity serve to preserve and transmit cultural values from one generation to the next.
