Sri Lanka’s appointed Cricket Transformation Committee has mapped out plans for the urgently needed upliftment of the game
which has reached the depths of despair.
Embarassed by the steady deterioration of the game under the former regime, the Sports Ministry under the direction of President Anura Kumara Dissanayake dissolved the elected administration and replaced them with a hand picked team to address the country’s fall from grace in the international arena.
Sri Lanka were made to pay a heavy price for it with the relocation of the Women’s World Cup to India. But fans feel the substantial financial loss may pay off if the game is resurrected to its once former glory.
The repercussions of the ICC’S decision plays into the hands of India who is widely believed to control the governing body and gives them the advantage and opportunity to add another trophy to their cabinet.
More importantly, it has catastrophic financial implications that will cost the country more than a billion rupees in revenue from hosting the tournament.
Hopefully, the upside will be the attraction Sri Lanka will gain as a serious competitor to the top teams which will attract regular income after proper elections are held after the CTC recommendations are tabled and passed in parliament.
SLC Transformation Committee: What Has Been Done So Far?

Sri Lanka Cricket’s Transformation Committee has issued a detailed statement outlining the progress it says has been made since its appointment on 29 April 2026.
Here are the key points:
NEW CONSTITUTION
• Drafted a new Sri Lanka Cricket Constitution within two months
• Submitted it to the Government
• Government is now taking steps towards presenting it to Parliament
DOMESTIC CLUB STRUCTURE
• Major Tier ‘A’ clubs to be reduced from 14 to 10 over two years
• Tier ‘B’ to remain at 12 clubs
• Aim is to create a more competitive top-level domestic structure
FOUR-DAY FIRST-CLASS CRICKET
• Major Club Tier ‘A’ League to move from three days to four days
• Intended to provide better preparation for Test cricket
DOMESTIC CALENDAR
• Work underway on a structured cricket calendar
• Rest periods to be incorporated to reduce injuries and player burnout
SCHOOLS CRICKET
• Schools tournament structure is being revamped as part of the national talent pathway
PITCHES
• Experienced National Curator appointed following an independent process led by former ICC Head Curator Andy Atkinson
• Curators at international venues are now directly employed by SLC
COACHING
• New District and Provincial Coaches appointed following interviews involving coach developer Ashley Ross
• Review of the High Performance Centre and overall coaching structure underway
• District and Provincial coaches to come under direct SLC employment
UMPIRES & MATCH REFEREES
• Former ICC umpires Lyndon Hannibal and Ruchira Palliyaguruge appointed to strengthen umpire development and coaching
• Focus extends from school cricket to the international level
SPORTS MEDICINE & PLAYER WELFARE
• Sports Medicine structure being reorganised with assistance from Dr Alex Kountouris
• Sports psychologist brought into the National Men’s Team programme
WOMEN’S CRICKET
• Training programmes launched, including media and communication skills development
• Aim is to strengthen the professional development and overall women’s cricket programme
FINANCIAL & OPERATIONAL REFORMS
• SLC says it has moved to curb unnecessary expenditure
• Unnecessary legal proceedings withdrawn
• Unnecessary consultants discontinued
• Positions without clearly defined roles removed
• Coaching structure reduced
REDRESS
• Steps taken to address employees and clubs the Committee says were unfairly penalised in the past
• Intended to rebuild trust with employees, clubs and stakeholders
