The Jewel Casket of Kandy: Sri Lanka’s Masterpiece Carved in Ivory
Source : Meshaun Journeys LinkedIn
Did you know… one of the world’s most beautiful jewel caskets was carved right here in Kandy, Sri Lanka in the 1600s?
Made from elephant tusks by the hands of Sinhala craftsmen, this casket is covered with breathtaking designs—scrolling leaves, flowers, and even mythical beings. Every line was carved with patience and talent passed down through generations.
The Dutch traders carried it to Europe, where noble families kept it as a treasure box for pearls and jewels. Today it sits proudly at The Met Museum in New York. But its story begins with us.
This is proof of how far our ancestors’ skill reached, and how respected Sinhala artistry once was.
Many more of these Sri Lankan ivory works are scattered across the world… some even still remain in Sri Lanka.
