The Nikini Full Moon Poya day – Malsha – eLanka

The Nikini Full Moon Poya day - Malsha - eLanka

The Nikini Full Moon Poya day, which typically falls in the month of August, holds profound importance for Buddhists worldwide. This special occasion commemorates significant events in Buddhism’s history and spiritual practice.

One pivotal moment tied to this day is when Ven. Rahula Thera, the son of Gautama Buddha, attained Arahathship by embracing the Dhamma on a Nikini Poya day. Another pivotal event was the First Convocation of the Buddhist Council, also known as the First Dharma Sangayanawa. This assembly, led by Arahath Maha Kassapa Thera, took place three months after the Buddha’s Parinibbana, or his passing into Nirvana. It involved five hundred great Arahats and was held in the Sapthaparni cave in Rajagaha Nuwara. This gathering was aimed at safeguarding the Noble Dhamma for future generations.

Nikini Poya day is a unique opportunity for bhikkhus who were unable to observe the Perawas to engage in a practice called Pasuwas. This day is marked with reverence and spiritual dedication by Buddhists in Sri Lanka. They participate in Aamisa (material) and Prathipaththi (spiritual) pooja, reflecting the dual aspects of their devotion.

Nikini Poya occupies a significant place in the Vas season, being the second Poya during August. The Vas retreat, initiated by the Buddha, spans around four months and begins with Esala Poya, continuing through Nikini Poya. During Vas, Buddhist monks focus on intense spiritual pursuit, minimizing outdoor activities. This period strengthens their connection with lay devotees, fostering discussions and advice-seeking. Lay devotees play a vital role in supporting the monks during this retreat, in accordance with the Buddha’s directive.

One of the most remarkable occurrences associated with Nikini Full Moon Poya day is the First Dhamma Sangayana (Sangha Council). This momentous event took place centuries ago in the Sattapanni Cave in Rajagahanuwara. Three months after the Buddha’s Parinirvana, the senior disciples of the Buddha convened to establish principles and rules for the Maha Sangha. This convocation, presided over by Mahakassapa Thero, also marked the attainment of Arahantship by Ananda Thero, the Buddha’s chief disciple.

In Sri Lanka, Nikini Poya day is observed with devout visits to temples, offering flowers, and engaging in religious practices. It holds particular significance as it marks the culmination of the annual Kandy Esala Perahera, which concludes with a Day Perahera on Nikini Full Moon Poya day. This renowned Perahera is a captivating experience, leaving a lasting impression on those who witness it.
