AN INSPIRATIONAL MESSAGE FOR THE MONTH OF MAY 2023 (MOTHER’S DAY) ‘Mary quietly treasured these things in her heart.’ Luke 2:19 ‘Some things only a mum can do… like powdering a baby’s bottom with one hand while holding the phone with the other… Spending the day wiping noses, laundering socks, balancing a cheque book, and still mean it when she thanks God for her kids. Some things only a mum can fix… like the cabinet doors her husband couldn’t, and his bruised ego when he found out she could! Broken shoelaces… broken hearts… breaking up with your sweetheart. Some things only a mum can know… like how long it takes to drive from piano lessons to football practice… how many pizzas you need for a sleepover… the number of days left in a term. The rest of us can only wonder… “Mum, what was it like when that infant’s cry first filled the ...

Dansala’s -way side street cooked food stalls – By Dr harold Gunatillake Buddha. Feeding poor people is one of the duties of a Buddhist. Generosity is a core practice of Buddhism, and one of the traditional expressions of this is through offering food to the monks and nuns. Buddhism emphasizes the fact that everybody lives on food and that is the main requisite. The Buddhist generosity culminates when one sacrifices his/her own life for the benefit of others. According to Buddhism, before asking the person to follow the teachings of the Buddha, one should check whether the person had enough to eat because the hungry cannot comprehend the essence of the teachings. The Buddha mentioned that hunger is the worst disease. Wesak is the most important Buddhist festival, taking place at the full moon when the sun is in the zodiac sign of Taurus, and commemorating the birth, enlightenment, and ...

EPOCH OF POLONNARUWA – By Dr Tilak S. Fernando During this period of Kingdom, Ceylon was divided into three regions: Rohana (Matara), Southern and Raja Rata (Up county). In the early part of this kingdom, disputes, conspiracies or threats of fear of war existed. Therefore, it caused many problems towards the progress of the country. At times all three regions’ economy was spent on war compulsions. When considering how those Kings of the Polonnaruwa era took care of Ceylon’s interest by making a liberal nation towards the early part of the kingdom, especially King Parakramabahu did not allow any foreign invasion to occur. He built several fortresses at strategic locations in his kingdom. King Parakramabahu was keen on increasing agricultural production by growing much land for paddy cultivation and promoting several irrigation channels. It revealed the King’s ambition and popular saying: ‘Do not allow a single drop of water go ...

Remembering Deshamanya Professor Tony Furkhan On His First Death Anniversary – May 8, 2023 A year has passed since the departure of my brother Tony Furkhan. I share and reminisce our very fond and cherished memories in our life together. We two, plus my late brother Sapthy (who passed away at the age of sixteen) together with my sister Mashooratha were the last four youngest living siblings of the Thassim family. My brother and I had a five-year age difference. But we might have well been twins. Our life is so intertwined like two strings making up a rope. We both started schooling at Siddhartha College Balapitiya. Then we both and my sister lived with our eldest brother Mansoor at 14th Lane Kollupitiya. During this time my brother Tony had a fall cleaning an inside window in the house and for many years was limping with one leg shorter than ...
