END OF AN ILLUSTRIOUS AND RICH CAREER – by Joe Van Langenberg It was with profound sorrow, that I learnt of the sad news of my good friend Desmond “Des” Kelly’s unexpected passing. My grief was palpable, raw, excruciating; rendering me speechless, given the fact it was only three days back, we spoke at length telephonically. And it was a tete-a tete embellished with his trademark humour and positive outlook on life. Des, as he was affectionately known to those privileged enough to have got up, close and personal with him, either on a personal or professional level, was one of the most likeable, and intelligent gentlemen ever. He became a very close friend of mine through our mutual love for music, which he happened to have an encyclopedic knowledge of, in addition to an eclectic taste for the same. Hence the enviable title of Mr Music. Des was additionally ...

Vale Mr Desmond Kelly (photos sent to eLanka by Trevine Rodrigo) It is with shock and deep sadness it was to Anne and I to be informed of the passing of our friend and father figure Des Kelly. In fact our families have all interacted with him and miss him dearly, after meeting him at our home when he visited often during the days he got around.  Our interaction with him began with a phone call to me around 15 years ago.  He wanted me to drop by for a conversation.  It was about wanting me to contribute stories the the Lanka Times which he was the Editor of.  Knowing of my commitment to another publication in Melbourne he put it subtly to me that he would be happy if I could forward stories not used in the other paper for the Lanka Times. That meeting with Anne and I ...

Flames on Nile Source:Island It is with shock and dismay that the world is watching waves of barbaric violence sweeping across Sudan. The current conflagration has resulted from a bitter dispute over an internationally-backed move to facilitate the formation of a new civilian government four years after the ouster of President Omar al-Bashir in a military coup. What is of tragic import is the fact that the secession of South Sudan has not helped resolve Sudan’s crises once and for all. It may have helped contain one conflict, but, overall, the partition has enabled neither Sudan nor South Sudan to come out of other crises, which are numerous. South Sudan is also gripped by economic, humanitarian and political crises. It is facing mass displacement, a culture of impunity, food insecurity, blatant human rights violations, economic deprivation and political instability. The situation in this relatively new state is extremely complicated and ...

A Drama in Four Acts: Dishonest Reportage by Amnesty International and Aussie Journalists remains Unmasked-by Michael Roberts Source:Thuppahis Michael Roberts, courtesy of Colombo Telegraph, https://www.colombotelegraph.com/index.php/dishonest-reportage-by-ai-aussie-journalists-remains-unmasked-a-drama-in-two-acts/, 2 September 2015, where it is presented in Two Acts     A. Thoughts on My Abject Failure On the 31st March 2011 a panel of lawyers appointed by Ban Ki-Moon submitted a review of the Sri Lankan War IV without ever visiting the island. The report was composed in the manner of a prosecuting team rather than a judicial assessment. It was as slipshod in its methodology as flawed in several of its conclusions. Nevertheless, it is widely cited in a number of quarters, quarters hostile to the admittedly distasteful Rajapaksa Regime and happy to have any cane to beat up their activities. A headmaster wielding a cane must have judiciousness on his side. Moral crusaders such as, say, Amnesty International must adhere to ethics in presentation and quotation. But, as it happens, the ...

Noel News  “The budget should be balanced, the Treasury should be refilled, public debt should be reduced, the arrogance of officialdom should be tempered and controlled, and the assistance to foreign lands should be curtailed lest Rome become bankrupt. People must again learn to work, instead of living on public assistance.”  CICERO – 55 BC This is an early newsletter: The Federal Budget will be delivered on Tuesday 9 May, after which I’ll be doing a special bulletin. Labor has already promised no more changes to super but I’ll believe that when I see it. I’ve got three speeches booked in after the budget and I am sending this newsletter now to give you plenty of notice if you would like to come. Inflation The Reserve Bank usually announces interest-rate movements on the first Tuesday of the month, which means the next announcement will come on Tuesday next week. Of course, there are the ...
