FOREWARNED IS FOREARMED Yes, unfortunately, it’s a topsy-turvy World out there. Everywhere one looks, there is nothing but trouble. On this “little blue ball” that astronaut Buzz Aldrin described as a tiny, peaceful-looking “speck”, floating in space, at the time when he was closer to the moon than anybody else I know, Buzz was lucky enough to “see” our planet for what it SHOULD BE. From what I read, while renowned scientists are doing their damndest to prove that this universe was formed by the “big-bang” theory, Astronauts like Neil Alden Armstrong and his team, who were proven to be the first -ever, to walk-on, & travel around, in the closest proximity of “our moon”, seem to think otherwise. I have never claimed to be a religious person, but, like the gentlemen mentioned above, I do believe that “God Is”, two simple words that tell us that there IS a ...

Sri Lanka under-20 Sevens Rugby the best in Asia – By Trevine Rodrigo in Melbourne Sri Lanka’s rugby future appears in good hands if their recent success in the Asian Rugby under- 20 Sevens circuit is any indication of their prowess. In a series designed much like the International Sevens which spans the globe at the highest level, the Asian junior version comprises the best teams such as Japan, South Korea and Hong Kong who are powerhouses in the world game and the plucky Lankans displayed fantastic skill to emerge winners of the two nation tournaments held in Kula Lumpur, Malaysia and Kowloon, Hong Kong. It is the first time in Sri Lanka’s 137-year old rugby history that they have won an international event such as this, their crowning moment being when they smashed a powerful South Korea 38-0 in the final of the Malaysian leg of the tournament. The ...

Metabolism what it means – by Dr Harold Gunatillake Metabolism what it means. Metabolism is the biochemical processes that occur in our bodies for survival. Through these processes all organisms live, produce energy, breath, build muscles, stores fat, circulates blood, eliminate waste material, and so on. The organs in our body are akin to machines. Metabolism is the process that makes the machines work to give energy for living. In other words metabolism is how your body converts or uses energy for activities mentioned above. ...

Heather Jansz, The Curry Diva Meet the Chef Heather grew up in the tropics of Sri Lanka. As a young girl, Heather helped the women of the family grind and blend spices taking in the intoxicating and perfumed air. Heather dreamed of bringing the exotic spices and tropical flavors and tastes to the rest of the world. In the early ’70s, Heather moved to Minneapolis with the desire to bring the fresh, exotic flavors that she knew so well to Minnesotans. Heather opened the award-winning Sri Lanka Curry House Restaurant, and later, the Curry Leaf Deli in St. Paul. Though advised against serving such exotic fare, I learned that Minnesotans were open to experiencing her exotic fare. Heather has prepared thousands of meals and served them to truly satisfied customers. She has also co-authored a cookbook, Fire and Spice: The Cuisine of Sri Lanka. Second cookbook in the making. And ...

THE BALLAD OF MARY-ROSE by DK “the Star of elanka!” “Stories in song”, three little words that, I believe, should be the “basic platform” of anyone who calls himself/herself, a song-writer. A song is, as I have often said, a condensed “story” combined with a piece of music as a background. Where a story takes a few thousand words to explain itself, many paragraphs and, depending on it’s length, many hours to read, a song is much more brief,  but must still endeavour to tell it’s story to best effect. The only necessacity here, would be a good “vocalist” to fill the void. Millions of songs have been written over the years. Of these “compositions”, many have been the works of dual personalities in both “lyricists”& “music”, composers who work together to produce a song. I have been extremely blessed in that I can still do both. I can, and ...

Gluten Intolerance & sensitivity Written by Dr Harold Gunatillake, FRCS, FICS, FIACS. AM(Sing), MBBS (Cey) Health writer How many people suffer from intolerance or sensitivity to gluten containing foods? In Sri Lanka this condition is unknowingly common due to consumption of processed white bread daily as accepted breakfast, lunch or dinner- a quick way to feed your hunger replacing rice and curry as main meals. The most popular curry that goes well nutritiously with bread is lentil curry. Fortunately lentils are gluten-free Now what are gluten containing foods? They include foods made from wheat flour, Rye and Barley. Eggs, meat, fish have no gluten. Oats have no gluten but may cause bloating, pain and diarrhea. ...

INSPIRATIONAL MESSAGE FOR AUGUST 2016 Darrell Scott Testimony On Thursday, May 27, 1999, Darrell Scott, the father of Rachel Scott, a victim of the Columbine High School shootings in Littleton, Colorado, was invited to address the House Judiciary Committee’s sub-committee. What he said to the national leaders during this special session of Congress was painfully truthful. They were not prepared for what he was to say, nor was it received well. It needs to be heard by every parent, every teacher, every politician, every sociologist, every psychologist, and every so-called expert! These courageous words spoken by Darrell Scott are powerful, penetrating, and deeply personal. There is no doubt that God sent this man as a voice crying in the wilderness. The following is a portion of the transcript:– “Since the dawn of creation there has been both good and evil in the hearts of men and women. We all contain ...
