DESMOND KELLY

“Vale” Vajira Ekenayake by Desmond Kelly “the Star of eLanka” A simple, humble, hard-working Sri Lankan man, firstly, a good friend, Vajira & I had always “kept in touch” even though our “paths” had changed since I left the City of Dandenong nearly ten years ago and because, sadly, Vajira was diabetic, a great deal of his time was spent in dialysis at the Dandenong Hospital, we would speak to each other on the telephone and his first question to me would always be ” Desmond, how is your cat”?. Vajira loved animals, so, after I told him that I had to have “Portia ” put down because she, too had contacted the dreaded diabetes and this was my Vet’s recommendation, we would continue our “chat” on what else was “going on”. Even though he was suffering a disease that generally “passes-by” people such as Vajira, as he was a ...

The A.B.C. of Lankan Cricket by Desmond Kelly; “the Star of eLanka” Congratulations are in order to our Sri Lankan Cricketers, all. After beating South Africa, in South Africa, which wasn’t at all easy, their T20 “team” came to Australia, beat the Prime Minister’s “Eleven” which should not have happened because our P.M. seems to be having a rough time of it, off the field as well, then came to the M.C.G. in Melbourne to defeat the “home-side” in one of the closest T20 cricket matches I have ever seen. Right down to the “last” ball, with Lanka needing just one “run” to win, a boundary of 4 was hit, giving this “entertaining cricket team” another well-earned win. It is “on purpose” that I will refrain from actually naming the gentlemen involved in the game that they love so much. Firstly, all their names seem to be so lengthy (these ...

India by Desmond Kelly “the Star of eLanka” I have written many “articles”, on Ceylon (as I always prefer to remember her), many poems, many “stories”, many songs, and even my own brief version of her history, which has been read and enjoyed by the readers.of eLanka, our major website for all Lankans & Lankan-Aussies, plus Lanka Times, the newspaper for all our older readers ( I suppose), who have only heard about “mosquito & fishing nets” and, as such, have no time for the “Internet”. Yes, many are the “comments” I have made, on this tiny Island, so it would be remiss of me to “forget” the huge Land that is our closest neighbour, India. I will now rectify this “delay” and give my readers 20 amazing facts about the Country bred unassuming but uncanny people like the ” Mahatma Ghandi” and Saint Theresa amoung others. Here we go ...

IS “VETTING” UPSETTING? By the “Star of eLanka” Is “vetting” upsetting? , I would think not Cos, this is the ONLY method we’ve got Refugees, migrants, whoever they are They all need compassion, this is clear, so far They leave their own Country to seek a new life For whatever reason, be it trouble or strife But THEY must be prepared, to prove they’ll be true To who gives them succour, whether many,or few Vetting’s important, of this, there’s no doubt This is one word, that we can’t do without EVERY refugee should, from now, expect This “extreme vetting”, is a very safe bet! . ...

LIFE IS FUNNY,SOMETIMES by Desmond Kelly “ the Star of eLanka” My dear readers of eLanka everywhere, I love women, am certainly not homophobic in any sense of the word, but, as I have written before, I now reiterate some of the facts why, on the whole, men seem to be less.depressed than women. NICKNAMES. If Laura, Kate & Sarah go out to lunch, they still refer to each other by their Christian names, but if Mike, Dave & John go out, they affectionately call each other “fat-boy”, “Bubba” & “Dick-head”. Older women “get together” for their “hens parties” etc. They seem fonder of “elite” names for their “groups”, but I do believe that there.is a “club” for men in Sydney Australia that call themselves “the old bastards”. To go even further with this, if these Aussies meet in the Street, the expected cordial greeting would always be “hello, you ...

SRI LANKA A.F.L.MISSION by Desmond Kelly “the Star of eLanka” On the 4th of February, 2017, our 69th anniversary of Independence, at around 8.20 pm, the State of Victoria’s political reporter of the Melbourne Herald Sun, Tom Minear sat down to write what he probably thought would be the “scoop” of the week, in that it was a “story on Sri Lanka”& a Sri Lankan. As fate would have it, the “Social Media” right now, is in the doldrums . ALL Newspapers are “doing it tough”. There is no need however to “flash” a big, heart-rending “HEADLINE” that went something like this. “VICTORIAN M.P.JUDE PERERA SPENT TAXPAYERS’ MONEY ON ILL-FATED SRI LANKAN A.F.L. MISSION.” ...

“COCK-A-DOODLE -DO” by Desmond Kelly “the Star of eLanka” Cock-a-doodle do, I’m up at half-past two La Bambas’ have been singing it I’m “writing” it for you Our Lankan “group” on “Sooriya” A most popular song The Chinese rooster’s “year” my friends Why don’t we sing along? Yes, Trump is busy starting, the biggest friggin wall Since China built her own, my friends Sooo big & long & tall Also, he’ll soon be “vetting”to keep the “useless” out Exactly what we should be doing In “Oz”, without a doubt. Everywhere they’re fighting, not just the Chinese cocks Once, where the people’s brains were We’re only finding rocks This World will soon be ending Someday, around midnight Still leaves us enough time, my friends For one more damn cock-fight ...

“ANGEL IN DISGUISE” by Desmond Kelly, “the Star of eLanka” Another Latin/Swing song composed by someone who, through life, has met many such angels. This is why, I suppose, most entertainers, bandsmen, us men, (especially), musicians & composers, cannot seem to “settle down” to a normal life expected in the “happily-married stakes”. I have just been watching a “doco” on one of the top-most, technically-perfect, singers of our time, Frank Sinatra. He was “linked” romantically with at least half a dozen beautiful American women, including Marilyn Monroe, Lauren Bacall & who can ever forget Ava Gardner? . Beautiful, to the enth degree. In “old blue-eyes” case, it was indeed Ava who was the “angel in disguise” She loved him and left him, to finally marry Barbara Marx. The sad part of this story is the fact that Nancy Barbato, Frank’s first wife (he married her when he was nineteen years ...

“HAPPY DAYS ARE HERE AGAIN” by Des Kelly “the Star of eLanka” Another great old song, sung with gusto in the halcyon days of the 1950’s as I remember them, “the skies above are clear again”, yes, clear, they were, especially in the Ceylon I knew, even though we were certainly not affluent and could only afford about two and a half rupees for a good ” thosai” feed washed down with a” kiri-kopi”as only the odd Thumby could produce, at a “famous” thosai-joint” in Bambalapitiya, then have a “smoke” of a rather expensive cigarette with the name “Capstan Navy-Cut”, or, perhaps, even a ” Black & White” or “Abdullah”(a flat cigarette, perhaps because the “Tins” were flattened at the Colombo Harbour), “pinched” by my good friend & Peterite David Swan(God rest his soul, IF, he has passed-away, as I am given to understand), from his Pater, who was a ...

TO BEGIN THE YEAR 2017 ON A POSITIVE NOTE  By Des Kelly “the Star of eLanka” Finally, it seems as though some of my “articles” are being read by those in Governments Federal & State, and, the latest news is that “Child-Molestors” or “SCUM-BAGS”, to use a.more adequate term, if found guilty, of course, will be sentenced to “LIFE” which will mean JUST THAT. My problem here is that, in Australia, jails are “a laugh”. Some “no-hopers” in this Country commit crimes just so they CAN GO TO PRISON. There, most of them, whose lives are a shambles, OUTSIDE, happen to be much better-off, INSIDE. 3 square meals, regular exercise, medications (brought to THEM), when they get ill, poor things, books to read, “COURSES” to help them find employment, after they get out, when that rather silly word,” rehabilitation” comes into use as an excuse for letting these Crims out ...
