Ehelepola Kumarihamy stands as one of the most tragic yet inspiring figures in Sri Lankan history. She was the wife of Ehelepola Nilame, a high-ranking noble during the reign of King Sri Vikrama Rajasinha of the Kingdom of Kandy. Her life was marked by immense courage, sacrifice, and suffering, making her a symbol of resilience and unwavering loyalty to her family and country.

Background and Historical Context

Ehelepola Kumarihamy was married to Ehelepola Nilame, who served as the First Adigar (Prime Minister) of the Kingdom of Kandy. At the time, Sri Lanka was divided, with the Kandyan Kingdom struggling to maintain its independence amidst internal betrayals and growing colonial interests from the British.

Ehelepola Nilame was once a trusted official of King Sri Vikrama Rajasinha but later aligned himself with the British, seeking to overthrow the king. This act of defiance was considered treason, leading to devastating consequences for his family.

The Tragic Fate of Ehelepola Kumarihamy and Her Children

When King Sri Vikrama Rajasinha discovered Ehelepola Nilame’s rebellion, he sought to punish him through his family. Ehelepola Kumarihamy, along with her four children, was captured and brought before the king in 1814.

Execution of Her Children

In one of the most heart-wrenching events in Sri Lankan history, the king ordered the execution of Ehelepola Nilame’s young children as punishment for their father’s betrayal.

  1. The eldest son was beheaded before Ehelepola Kumarihamy’s eyes.
  2. The younger sons and daughter were then drowned in the Bogambara tank, a brutal act of vengeance.

Despite witnessing this unimaginable horror, Ehelepola Kumarihamy did not break. She displayed unparalleled courage, refusing to beg for mercy or betray her husband’s cause.

Her Own Tragic End

Following the execution of her children, Ehelepola Kumarihamy herself was sentenced to death by drowning. She was thrown into the Bogambara Lake, meeting a fate that immortalized her as a martyr in Sri Lankan history.

Ehelepola Kumarihamy’s Legacy

Ehelepola Kumarihamy’s story remains a powerful reminder of resilience, patriotism, and sacrifice. Her unwavering strength in the face of tragedy has made her an icon of Sri Lankan history.
