According to Buddhist tradition, on Duruthu Poya Day, over two millennia ago, the Buddha visited Mahiyangana in Sri Lanka. His purpose was to mediate and bring about reconciliation between two Naga kings, Chulodara and Mahodara, who were engaged in a fierce rivalry over a gem-studded throne. The Buddha’s intervention not only resolved the conflict peacefully but also laid the foundation for a deep spiritual connection between Buddhism and the island nation.

Duruthu Poya Day stands as a symbol of the Buddha’s commitment to peace and non-violence. The resolution of the dispute between the two kings serves as a timeless reminder of the importance of dialogue, understanding, and conflict resolution without resorting to violence. This aspect of the celebration encourages practitioners to embrace the principles of peace and harmony in their own lives and communities.

The day is marked by various religious observances that draw devotees to temples and monasteries. Buddhists engage in rituals, prayers, and meditation sessions, reflecting on the teachings of the Buddha and seeking spiritual enlightenment. The atmosphere is one of reverence and devotion, creating a conducive environment for personal introspection and growth.

Duruthu Poya Day is not merely a religious observance but also a cultural celebration in Sri Lanka. Festivals, processions, and cultural events take place across the country, showcasing the rich cultural heritage intertwined with Buddhist traditions. The vibrant festivities add a colorful dimension to the spiritual significance of the day, fostering a sense of unity and shared identity among the people.

As with many Poya days, Duruthu Poya is a time for acts of charity and generosity. Devotees participate in giving alms to the less fortunate, supporting charitable causes, and engaging in compassionate deeds. This practice emphasizes the importance of selflessness and compassion in line with Buddhist teachings.

Duruthu Full Moon Poya Day is a celebration that encapsulates the essence of Buddhism – a commitment to peace, spiritual awakening, and acts of kindness. As devotees come together to commemorate the Buddha’s historic visit to Sri Lanka, they not only honor the past but also renew their dedication to the timeless principles that guide their spiritual journey. The celebration serves as a beacon of light, inspiring individuals to lead lives of compassion, understanding, and harmony.
