Why do communications fail? How do we ensure they do not fail? - By Alok Das

Communication is the lifeblood of any organisation.
Yet, despite its importance, it often falls short.
Let’s break it down and see how we can fix it.

1.  Lack of Clarity: One of the biggest culprits is ambiguity. When messages are vague or convoluted, they leave room for misinterpretation.

Solution: Clear, concise communication is key. If your audience has to decipher your message, you’ve already lost them.

2. Assumptions: We often assume that others know what we know. This leads to gaps in understanding.

Solution: Effective communication requires putting yourself in the shoes of your audience. What do they need to know? What context do they lack? Fill in those gaps.

3.Inconsistent Messaging: Consistency builds trust. When messages are inconsistent, it creates confusion and erodes credibility.

Solution: Ensure that your communication is aligned across all channels and stakeholders. Mixed messages can derail even the best-laid plans.

4. Lack of Engagement: Communication is a two-way street. If you’re not engaging your audience, you’re not communicating effectively.

Solution: Encourage feedback, ask questions, and listen actively. Engagement fosters understanding and buy-in.

5.Emotional Disconnect: Emotions play a crucial role in how messages are received. If your communication lacks empathy or fails to address the emotional aspect, it can fall flat.

Solution: Connect with your audience on an emotional level. Show that you understand their concerns and aspirations.

6.Overloading Information: Bombarding your audience with too much information can be overwhelming.

Solution: Prioritise key messages and deliver them in digestible chunks. Less is often more when it comes to effective communication.

7.Ignoring Non-Verbal Cues: Communication isn’t just about words. Non-verbal cues like body language, tone, and facial expressions convey a lot. Ignoring these can lead to misunderstandings.

Solution: Be mindful of the non-verbal signals you’re sending and receiving.

In the context of change management, these pitfalls can be particularly detrimental.
Change is inherently challenging, and poor communication can exacerbate resistance and confusion.
By addressing these common failures, leaders can foster a more supportive environment for change, ensuring that their messages not only reach but resonate with their audience.
Effective communication is the cornerstone of successful change management.
