Education through Sports-By Rev.fr.Milann Bernard Source:Dailymirror The Biggest Loser; Ranataunga Karunananda who represented Sri Lanka at the 1964 Tokyo Olympics showed the world that ‘Winning Isn’t Everything’.     Taking part in 10,000 meters he was lapped four times when the winner USA’s Billy Mills broke the tape to finish the race. But Karunananda continued to run and finish his event, first amidst jeers by the spectators but later with their cheers and applause. His story was a lesson in Japan’s schools, now in Sri Lankan school as well. Education and Sports are like two sides of the same coin. They are so much interconnected and linked. Sports is an integral part of the Education System in Sri Lanka. Moreover, I would say Sports has become part and parcel of the Education System in Sri Lanka. A classic example is the Annual Sports Meets of schools. The Annual Sports Meet is ...

Imran Khan – rare blend of politics and sportsmanship Source:Island By the time you read this, our nation’s Goose may have been cooked in Geneva, and only the bare bones are left for political pundits to chew on. I have been consistent in my belief that our performance from 30/1 onwards was unprincipled and reckless. I am less concerned about whether the UNHCR has the authority to take us further along to judicial prosecution or not, but I am more worried about the moral and ethical dimensions of how we have handled the matter of quelling the murderous LTTE and its supporters. When the terrorists disdainfully rejected one of the several peace offers of the Kumaratunge-led Government, Kadirgamar eloquently summed up the situation and his disappointment, ending with “If it is War the LTTE wants, then War they will get”. And boy, did they not get it! I was reminded ...

Remembering Dr. Neville Fernando Source:Island This tribute is in remembrance of my father-in-law, the late Dr. Neville Fernando who would have celebrated his 90th birthday on 9th March 2021. He passed away unexpectedly on the 4th of February 2021 due to the deadly COVID-19 virus. His birthday will be remembered with an almsgiving to the priests at the Kotikawatta temple to invoke merits on him to attain the Supreme bliss of Niravana. Religious observances on his birthday were an annual occurrence even during his lifetime. As I ponder his memories, being ‘no more’ is the saddest thought that crosses my mind. I suspect that if you are reading this you understand what I mean logically. Death means that our loved ones never grow a year older, although logic does little to clear up our confusion when his birthday continues to happen year after year. ...

ROYAL “She”nanigans – By Des Kelly A clever ruse, carried out for all intents and purposes, simply to lure the general public from the harsh realities of a global pandemic, still very much the focus of this planet called Earth. Social Media are a clever mob.           I watched this interview about the latest “Royal,” Prince Harry, grandson of Queen Elizabeth ‘ll, & Prince Phillip, her Consort/Husband, who married this American Actress Meghan Markle, a Commoner of Asian descent, then produced a male child who was named Archie, and is now expecting their second, a baby girl, later this year.  ...

What happens to dietary fats in the body? That is our talk, today-by Dr. Harold Gunatillake   Transcript: Dietary fats are triglycerides Triglycerides are composed of fatty acids Each molecule of triglyceride contains three fatty acids joined to an alcohol glycerol. Yes, fats you eat are triglycerides, and each molecule is composed of one glycerol molecule and three fatty acids. ‘Triglycerides are the main stores of body fat. They are stored in adipose cells, widely distributed over the body—mainly under the skin, around deep blood vessels, and in the abdominal cavity and to a lesser degree in association with muscles.’ So, when you see a guy fat as ever, you know where most of the fats are stored to give that shape: under the skin called subcutaneous fat and the protruding belly due to visceral fat. There are three kinds of macronutrients in the diet- we eat, Carbs, Fats and ...

Powerful performance from Bucks- By Nick Creely Benny Howell starred for Buckley Ridges on Saturday. Source:Dandenong When Buckley Ridges champ Daniel ‘DJ’ Watson is on song, there is really no way of stopping him. The master blaster has sent his fair share of balls onto Pultney Street and into the creek throughout his time at the club, and on Saturday the association great flayed them everywhere in a powerful performance that saw his side surge into the top-four with a round left to play. It was not only the power of his hitting, but the opposition he was up against that was the most impressive aspect of the performance – it came against the all-conquering Berwick outfit with plenty on the line. ...

Stunning finish in Turf 1-By Nick Creely Scott Phillips steams in for Narre South. Source:Dandenong In a 2020/21 that has seen so many twists and turns, it was only fitting that the DDCA Turf 1 home-and-away season would finish in such a crazy manner. The one-day season, combined with wet-weather, lockdowns and a variety of factors have made this Turf 1 season a fascinating one. Each game, and each result seemingly has always had implications. But finally, after all this time the top four is set: Hallam Kalora Park, Berwick, Springvale South and Buckley Ridges are the ones left to battle it out for a memorable flag. ...
