Why I took time off – Steven Smith- by VIKUS VAN DER SMURF Colombo – Hotel of the Australian Cricket Team & Bandaranayake International Airport: In the aftermath of the continual criticism of Australian Cricket Captain Steven Smith being rested & sent home to freshen up, our local investigative journalist and cricket connoisseur, Vikus Van Der Smurf, has found the true reasoning behind the baffling decision. On 25 August Cricket Australia announced that Captain Steven Smith would not be taking any further part of the 10 week Sri Lankan tour and will be sent home to freshen up prior to the high stakes series during the coming home summer. This caused quite an uproar among former Australian as well as international legends however coach Boof Lehman defended the decision saying it would give current vice captain David Warner good opportunity to lead the team if the need ever arises. ...

It’s anyone’s flag as the Hawks tumble and the Swans soar to the top – BY TREVINE RODRIGO IN MELBOURNE It’s incredible what a few weeks can unravel in football mainly when the purists have decisively penciled in who will win the flag this season but are stumped when the favourites fall by the wayside in the last few rounds, throwing open a myriad of other scenarios. Hawthorn, three time champions over the past years and strongly tipped to make it a “Fourthorn’ as their diehard fans like to refer to it, have tumbled from top spot to fourth on percentage with a shock loss to last year’s losing Grand Finalist West Coast and suddenly appearing to show chinks in their amour, or are they just fencing before making that decisive final thrust? Time will tell if the opposition have worked out strategies to nullify the mighty Hawks but one ...

“READING BETWEEN THE LINES” How strange is the life we live? . “eLanka” has just published an article I wrote about Richmal Crompton, titled “Unforgettable Writers” & will publish (hopefully) an article I have not quite finished yet titled “My Moratuwa Story”, both of which, reading between the lines, shows the importance of READING, practically from the time one is able to open up their first book. As usual, I was seated in my armchair, watching Jenny Brockie on SBS television conducting her very interesting forum for debate, and powerful “first person” stories, and doing so with professionalism & tact. She has “covered” many subjects on “INSIGHT”, some funny, some serious, some happy & some sad, but this “show”, to my own way of thinking, was absolutely shocking!, as well. How many of my readers would even know that about 44% of Australian Adults are BELOW the” line “in Literacy ...

“AGAIN, & YET AGAIN” I stood at this same bus-stop, where many years ago I waited for a girl, who I had loved so long before Yes, there she was, in the same bus As toward me now, it came So I joined her, to re-live our dreams again We sat beside each other, as I gently took her hand It was the same old feeling, right back in wonderland I told her I was sorry, that we ever had to part She was always & she still was, my sweetheart Again & yet again, we dreamed our dreams anew Again & yet again, she softly whispered “I love you” It had been many years, but once more, the same old flame We shared “memories”again & yet again. “Music-interlude” (covering 1st 2 verses/semitone up) Back to Chorus :-Again & yet again, etc. Lyrics & Music by Desmond Kelly. Star of ...

UNIQUE  SRI  LANKA  LIBRARY An unique library on Sri Lanka, perhaps the only one of its kind overseas, exists in Melbourne, Australia. This library was begun by Victor Melder in 1968, when he migrated to Australia. Victor, who had only one book with him then, has today accumulated over 5,00 books, 2000 magazines and journals and a collection of video and audio tapes all on Sri Lanka. Victor, who grew up in a village in Peradeniya, states he has savoured village life to its fullest and attributes this to be the cause of his unpretentious love for his motherland. This love, admiration and respect for this beautiful island is something he wishes to share with everyone alike in Australia. This is what gave birth to the ‘Victor Melder Sri Lanka Library’, which today is used by many Australiawide, as a primary source of reference on Sri Lanka. In 1968, Victor ...

“THE UGLY AUSTRALIANS ” by Desmond Kelly “the Star of eLanka!” There is an e’mail going around at the moment, regarding “the above”. Most Lankans, especially most eLankans should know all about it by now, but, as per usual, this writer’s tongue-in-cheek opinion will hopefully shed a little more light on the subject. As used in “cricket”, even before the start of a game, there is a coin to be tossed to decide who bats first. Thus said, there are “two sides” to every coin and, to start with, the “Head-line” (A) of this story is wrong. Just as certainly as there are “ugly Australians” there are “ugly Lankans”too & AND “ugly citizens” of most Countries” but, most Aussie guys are handsome, bronzed “pictures” of the “typical male” & the “girls” are mostly good-looking “Shielahs”too. However, amoung everyone, there are a few who “look nice from far, but are far ...
