Gavin Senn is no more BY TREVINE RODRIGO IN MELBOURNE Brilliant Saxophonist and outstanding vocalist and keyboard player Gavin Senn has suddenly departed this world for a better place. The multi-talented musician who thrilled music lovers worldwide succumbed to a kidney ailment which has borne him down over the past few years. An affable personality on and off the stage, Gavin was endeared by many of his peers in Sri Lanka’s vast music industry and his fans, touring with several bands notably Mirage with whom he played for many years. Gavin was an old boy of St. Peter’s College Colombo and St. Benedict’s College Kotahena, two schools that produced outstanding musicians in Sri Lanka. His untimely demise while yet in his fifties was a sad loss to the music world and the void he leaves behind will be hard to fill. He was cremated on September at the General Cemetry ...

Opera singer Danielle de Niese: from Young Talent Time to top soprano A Young Talent Time winner at the age of nine, Danielle de Niese has gone on to become one of the world’s leading opera sopranos. Jane Wheatley Danielle de Niese. Photo: Tina Hillier / Telegraph Media Group Limited 2016 It is a summer evening in England and soprano Danielle de Niese is playing Rosina in The Barber of Seville, a girl on the brink of womanhood, eager for romance and railing at the constraints imposed by her crusty guardian. As the tropes of comic opera play out – the plots, disguises and smuggled letters – de Niese is centre stage: coquettish charmer one minute, sassy schemer the next; stamping, pouting and flouncing among the men who each have a stake in her marriage prospects. At curtain call, she bows to applause from a packed audience, blows kisses to the ...

SILVER THREADS AMONG’ST THE GOLD A beautiful old song and an apt description of a group of beautiful people who form the Committee of Retirees from one of the very best Companies that I had the pleasure of working for during the 1980’s & into the 90’s, the Pilkington Glass Company, in Dandenong, Melbourne, Australia. The name of the Committee I write about, simply call themselves the “Silverthreads”, the work they continue to do, even after retirement, themselves, certainly have golden flecks amply strewn through the “silver”.They don’t have to do it, but then, in my book, they could also be called “Pilkington-Patriots-Past”. The “Silverthreads”, however, keep on, keeping on. If ever the word “caring” could describe a Company, “Pilkingtons” fit this description like a glove They were a great “bunch” to work for. Together, we produced what was undoubtedly the best glass in the World. If one used Pilkington “toughened” glass ...

The International Song Of Sri Lanka In continuation of the birth, death & rebirth of the ORIGINAL SRI LANKAN NATIONAL “ANTHEM” which is now sung under the “title” SRI LANKA MAATHA”, or simply “Sri Lanka Mother”, as the Sinhalese word implies, the latest is my personalized version of what I term “The International Song of Sri Lanka” which includes “English Lyrics”(not a translation), of the chorus of “Namo Namo Maatha”, simply stating that :- WE SALUTE OUR LAND FROM NEAR AND FAR IT’S OUR MOTHERLAND, OUR COUNTRY, SRI LANKA HER FLAG, WE FLY, WITH HEADS HELD HIGH FOR SRI LANKA NOTHING CAN EVER TAKE AWAY ALL THE PRIDE AND ALL THE GLORY THAT IS SRI LANKA IN FAIR OR STORMY WEATHER ALL SRI LANKANS STAND TOGETHER SINGING PRAISES OF OUR BRIGHT SHINING STAR IT’S OUR MOTHERLAND, OUR COUNTRY SRI LANKA HER FLAG WE FLY, WITH HEADS HELD HIGH FOR SRI ...

Some health benefits of bitter melon or “Karawila” Dr Hector Perera London In places like Sri Lanka, one can get hold of plenty of fresh vegetables in local food fairs or at “Pola”. They have these food fairs in nearly every town, usually once a week. Sunday food fairs are very popular and massive. Not only vegetables but dry fish as well are sold in these places. In a way this is just like a meeting place for some people. I found there is a one even in Buller’s road and sometimes they call “Jatika Pola”. Now there are plenty of super markets where you find all these vegetables among other things. ...

Breast Cancer-Treatment When breast cancer is detected early removal of the breast is the most common management, with or without adjuvant, radio and chemotherapy. Mastectomy is the name given to breast removal. In the past radical mastectomy was the standard treatment when the cancer was limited to the breast tissues and local underarm glands.
