DESMOND KELLY

“PROOF OF THE POSSUM” by Desmond Kelly ‘the Star of eLanka’ There is an old saying that “Country Songs” comprise “three chords & the truth”& , on the whole, unremittingly sad. Without any doubt, the ” masterpiece” ” He stopped loving her today”, recorded in 1980 by “Country Icon ” George Jones, not only adhered to the “old saying”, but found a way to transcend it. It was indeed a 3 chord song, done in 6 chords if you take the “change of key”, plus, it was a very sad song, although, like most Country Songs, the “Story of Life”, as we know it. The song was co-composed by Bobby Braddock & Curly Putman & the “sadness” was magnificently amplified by Producer Billy Sherrill especially when sung by “the possum” George Jones. ...

“SAME-SEX ARRANGED MARRIAGE” by Desmond Kelly the Star of eLanka  The World is a-changing. In Australia, right now, decisions are being made as to whether people of the same-sex should legally be able to get married. Top Politicians in this sun-burn’t Country, recently, have gone as far as to say that if a Catholic Priest refuses to “marry” a same-sex couple, then he should look for another job!, I was rather annoyed to see a morning-show host on “Aunty A.B.C.”rudely interrupt a”No-Man” several times, while interviewing two people with different views on this same rather complex issue. It was obvious to see how “Joe” was going to vote. I am certain that, for example, just a few years ago, in Ceylon, had I ever suggested to anyone there that I was planning to introduce ARRANGED,same-sex marriage,to the Sinhalese people, they would have run me out of the Country a long while before ...

“BREAKING : AFGHANISTAN PLAN” by Desmond Kelly ‘the Star of eLanka’ Call it “any which way, but loose”, call it, anyway you like, call it the total “idea” of the American Military Chiefs, SOMEONE had to transform the rhetoric into words, and, for the first time, since his inauguration into the American Presidency, I watched Donald Trump deliver a “speech to perfection”. He spoke, as I would expect an American President to speak. He spoke with a candor that was unmistakably honest, for someone whose popularity at the moment, is at a very low ebb. Obviously, this man does not give a damn for publicity. He was duly elected as the President of the United States of America, and when he first “appeared” on our television screens, speaking or “writing” personally, I thought to myself, oh well, being a billionaire, I suppose, anything is possible, even the Presidency of ...

“FOUR-SCORE & FORWARD” Chapter 4 by Desmond Kelly ‘the Star of eLanka’ Dad had invited his father to come in and meet his first grandson and “Grand-na” accepted the invitation. All I remember at the time was that my grand-father came in, took off the brown “Fedora” hat he always wore, said “hello” to dad & mum, sat down and took me on his knee. I remember looking into two twinkling, very blue Irish eyes. Another long-past song hit? comes to mind. “When Irish eyes are smiling” How true, this was. My grandfather never had to “show his teeth” in a smile. He never had to throw back his head and roar with laughter either. A little “chuckle” & his “eyes” did the smiling. Much much later, I had the chance to see the same eyes when he was angry about something. There is a very true saying that the ...

“ENTREPRENEUR EXTRAORDINAIRE” by Desmond Kelly ‘the Star of eLanka’ Time passes, but memories remain. On American Independence day, the 4th of July,2017, the people of Sri Lanka, formerly Ceylon, & especially those who formed the “Wonderful World” of Show Business in our beautiful Island, remembered him, DONAVAN ANDREE, who has “left the room” now, for 50 years. Those of us, Entertainers who were fortunate enough to personally work for Donavan, the writer being one of the very first to have the privilege, should never forget that it was this man who was responsible for ensuring that “his choice” got as far in a very demanding & difficult “Show-biz” career, as was humanly possible. Speaking for myself, as I usually do, an uncle of mine, Roy Demmer was one of Donavan’s “right-hand men” & when Roy wasn’t in the “guards -van” of one of the Ceylon Government Railway trains, doing his ...

“SIGIRIYA” by Desmond Kelly ‘the Star of eLanka’ An unforgettable experience of mine, in a bygone era, was.meeting and chatting with a rather elderly Bddhist Monk, on the rock that was called Mihintale. I have been extremely lucky in meeting some highly intelligent people during my life, but this particular Monk, whose name unfortunately eludes.me now, was perhaps one of the most amazing, well-spoken, educated people that I was fortunate to spend some time with. He spoke perfect English, while most of the other Monks around him could only converse in Sinhala. He spoke to me about the Buddhist Religon, about the “culture” of Ceylon, as it was known then, and one of the topics we spoke about was another “rock” that rose abruptly from the Plain, the Sinhalese call “SIGIRIYA”, the Lion-Rock, because, hundreds of years ago, it’s crest was carved to look like a huge lion, at the ...

THE FIRST PUNCH by Desmond Kelly Two professional boxers enter the “ring” for a “title-fight”. Both are trained to the highest degree. Both know their ringcraft & both are just as anxious to win this particular “fight”, but usually, after the introduction, the first “sizing-up”, the first clever “parrying” by both pugilists, IT IS the “first solid punch” that is successfully “thrown” which is the one that “counts” as far as the fight is concerned. If perhaps, he is psychic, the boxer who feels the sting of that first punch, begins to think that he may LOSE this fight & the boxer who delivers that punch has a definite rise in his confidence & might think he will WIN the bout. In the meantime, because it is a “title-fight”, there are eleven “rounds” to go. The “battle of the 1st punch has been won” BUT the “war of the fight ...

ALCO-HALL OF FAME by Desmond Kelly This one is dedicated to all the alcoholics out there. Before I point the finger at anyone, had I remained in Ceylon, in “THE ROYAL CEYLON NAVY”, I would not even have been writing this for my good readers of eLanka & Lanka Times today, I’d probably be pushing up the green grasses of my “Lovely Island Home”, for quite sometime now. Anyway, that is another “story”. A, “Country Gentleman” by the name of Wayne Kemp sings the song and sings it well. It is available on “You-Tube”. Listen, please, all you “elbow-benders”. These “lyrics” are meant for you. IT TOOK A WHILE TO GET HERE, IT DIDN’T HAPPEN OVER-NIGHT IT STARTED WITH A “SOCIAL DRINK”, NOW DRINKIN’S MY WHOLE LIFE I LOST THE WOMAN WHO LOVED ME, AND I’M THE ONLY ONE TO BLAME CAUSE I’M THE NEWEST MEMBER OF THE ALCOHOL OF ...

THE BIRTH OF TELEVISION Desmond Kelly Star of eLanka John Logie Baird invented television, which was good, but from that came Donald Trump, his “tweets” & the “Social Media”. What a lot of Lankan Aussies ( & others) don’t know, is that many many years ago, the “Baird Clan” were involved in a bitter fued with a band of German pirates who had “landed” in Scotland but no-one actually saw the Huns land, as it was “Flag-Day” in Aberdeen and everyone was hiding. It was quite a bitter struggle, but the Germans had much superior Forces and much better time-keeping, so, before too long the Baird family were in full retreat. Finally, only about three Baird-Clansmen wete left in the Highlands &, in America, President Trump has just tweet-blasted HIS Attorney General Jeff Sessions (& what a “session” that was).Meanwhile, all the other Bairds fled to England & the “Social-Security” ...
