“COMEDIES OF ERROR” by Desmond Kelly “the Star of eLanka” Usually, the other way around, a normal “comedy of errors” would feature one subject, but, in this day & age, so many “comedies” are occurring at the same time, my “phrase” had to be redesigned to suit these comedic situations. To begin with, when one talks of comedy, automatically, a “Circus Clown” comes into focus mentally. It is a fact that, generally, clowns are happy, gaily-dressed individuals who are especially selected by circus-owners for the purpose of being “funny” and entertaining audiences. A lesser-known fact is that, often, behind the happy, smiling face of the clown, is a man who is stressed-out, sad & suspicious of others around him. The clown is an “actor”, as was James Stewart in “The greatest show on earth”. “Dimples”, the clown was a great example of one, when he was performing, but behind the ...

“The Diamond Anniversary with a difference” by Desmond Kelly “the Star of eLanka” Firstly, my thanks to Charles Schokman & Randolph Melder, two proud Sri Lankan Aussies I am priviledged to know, for bringing us the “Special Story” on two other worthy Sri Lankans, Doris & Noel Thurgood who have just celebrated ” The Diamond Anniversary with a difference”, their 60th wedding anniversary, in Melbourne, on the 29th of December, 2016. Still another wonderful Lankan couple I have been extremely proud to know for many years now. Congratulations, Doris & Noel.many happy “returns” of what must have been a truly nostalgic “memory-bank” of your wedding day, 60 long years ago. As an “entertainer” & your friend, I’d say to you both, right now” True love is like a fan-club, with only two fans” Why, with so many other couples also celebrating their 60th wedding anniversaries on the same date, is THIS one ...

Elizabeth Alexandra Mary” “OUR QUEEN” by Desmond Kelly “the star of eLanka” (image source: Biography.com ) IT IS INDEED A RARE PRIVILEGE FOR ME TO START OFF A NEW YEAR (2017), WITH A TRIBUTE TO ONE OF THE MOST REMARKABLE WOMEN IN MODERN HISTORY, THE ELDEST DAUGHTER OF A KING, WHO BECAME ONE BY DEFAULT, WHEN HIS OLDER BROTHER GAVE UP THETHRONE FOR THE WOMAN  HE LOVED, FORCING YOUNGER BROTHER ALBERT TO TAKE OVER THE REINS & REIGN OVER BRITAIN AND THE COMMONWEALTH OF NATIONS, UNDER BRITISH RULE. EVERYONE WHO IS ANYONE, KNOWS THE STORY OF PRINCE EDWARD (THE FORMER  PRINCE OF WALES), WHO WAS PROCLAIMED EDWARD VIII KING OF ENGLAND IMMEDIATELY AFTER HIS FATHER, KING GEORGE V PASSED AWAY, IN 1952, BUT DECIDED TO ABDICATE WHEN FORBIDDEN TO MARRY MRS. WALLIS SIMPSON, AN AMERICAN DIVORCEE, STATING THAT HE, EDWARD, COULD NOT BE KING WITHOUT THE LOVE OF HIS LIFE SITTING BY ...

45TH PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES by Desmond Kelly Exactly one week to go as I decided to sit myself down to give “my farewell speech”in writing, to the out-going President, Mr. Barak Obama, his beautiful wife, Michelle, & their two lovely daughters Malia & Sasha, and, of course, my “welcome’ speech to President Donald Trump & his family.      On the 20th of January, 2017, Friday, an auspicious day, to say the least, the 45th President of the United States of America will step into the “Oval Office” at the White-house, and the 44th President will step out into relative freedom. Anyone who watched the final speech of President Obama, amalgamated with another excellent documentary on what actually goes on,  in the White-house & what it really means to be the President of the U.S.A., wil realize how difficult and demanding the job can be.      President Obama HAS ...

Birthday Wishes Talking about “Beauty Queens” & “Runners-Up”, eLanka, The Lanka Times & me, myself, send birthday wishes directly to Maureen Hingert in America (born on January 9th 1937), where she was the 2nd runner-up in “The Miss Universe” contest in the mid 50’s. She certainly put Ceylon “on the map” in achieving this & we are all proud of her. “Neliya” was 13 when I met her in 1950 in Lorensz Road, Bambalapitiya, where we both lived. I remember a song called “Puppy-Love” during the good old days and it certainly was, as far as we were concerned. Later on, I wrote the song “Dream-World” for her, too late for me, because she had already “made it” in the U.S.of A. when the song was released. This will be another “story” coming up in eLanka later, but let me just say ” Happy birthday Neliya” Time has caught up ...

MORE BINGLES WITH THE “SHINGLES” ISSUE by Desmond Kelly “the Star of eLanka” With all the road-accidents happening all over Australia, with all the “bingles” occuring, that could be avoided with some sensible pre- thinking, Australia’s incumbant Government is going around making themselves even more unpopular than they already are. Federal issues are now hitting the very people who have been previously responsible for the “triple “A” rating this Country now enjoys, THE PENSIONERS. Instead of targetting the billionaires & millionaires who, because of affluence, pay the least tax, the huge Companies using all the “lurks & perks” possible, to pay the least tax & sometimes, NO TAX WHATSOEVER, our Federal Government is insistant on penalizing the folk who can least afford it. The old-age Pensioner. As.it is, pensioners in Australia, or MOST of them, anyway, are forced to live the rest of their lives, practically on the “poverty-line”. In ...

SRI LANKAN MOON by Desmond Kelly “The Star of eLanka” Very recently, aware of how much I loved the music & entertainment provided by Raul Malo & the Mavericks, especially the DVD that was performed “live” by them in Texas, my son Michael purchased their newest CD Album “The Mavericks in time” & presented it to me on my 80th birthday. On this album, there are 14 irrestible new tracks ranging from the normal 3 & a half minutes – track 13 which lasts for just over 8 minutes, but the ONLY song that was so very brief (2 min.38 seconds) ,was the song that I enjoyed the most, titled “Amsterdam Moon” I have taken the trouble to give this PARTICULAR song so much publicity, especially for my eLanka fans, is because THIS ONE is an example of a simple, yet UNFORGETTABLE song, that can be listened to, over & ...

THE DROVERS’SONG by Desmond Kelly “the Star of eLanka” This one is especially for our Aussie “Country-folk”, the farmers, the cattle-men, & “Country-girls” who, for no fault of their own, sometimes lead very lonely lives, indeed. In this huge, beautiful Country, one hears about these “workers”, but that is as far as it goes. The men, spending far more time with “cattle” they are tending, because, this is what they do, get much less time with their families, and, as a result, their wives often feel the lonliness associated with the “farming life” even though they are kept busy with their home-duties & children, if any. I have written this little “song” especially for the “drovers” in Australia. This is for you, guys (& girls). “AS THE SHADOWS OF TWILIGHT ARE FALLING AND THE LONG COLD NIGHT IS NEAR HOW I WISH YOU WERE WITH ME, MY DARLING CLOSE MY ...

DISCRIMINATION by Desmond Kelly “the Star of eLanka” DISCRIMINATION, THE SCOURGE OF OUR GENERATION AGAINS’T COLOUR, CREED, GENDER & “STATION” SHOULD NOT BE HAPPENING IN THE AUSTRALIAN NATION, BUT, WHAT DO WE DO ABOUT THIS ABERRATION? !, NOT MUCH, BY THE SOUND OF IT.!. In better days, in Ceylon, the popular adage was “WOMEN FIRST, EVEN TO THE GALLOWS”. Women were, after all, “The weaker sex”, “The fairer sex”, “The better half”, etc.,etc.. Men were supposed to “look after them”, “open doors for them”, “carry bags for them” &.generally treat them like the QUEENS they were. Men, on the other hand, in Ceylon, anyway, either drank, smoked, gambled & chased hot, wild, women, (most times, all four). Many of them could afford to participate in all these nefarious activities because they were paid higher salaries than the women who “worked” both “at-home” & “at work”to help out in the financial ...
