Annual Eighty Club dinner dance at the Grand on Princes It sure looked like the wild, wild West at the annual Eighty Club dinner dance at the Grand on Princes in Melbourne. Around 300 guests, dressed to impress in wild West garb, gave credence to the theme as they frolicked to some great music at this now popular event. The Eighty Club is a charitable organisation that sponsors poor folk in Sri Lanka especially the Burghers, while also channelling funds to help the less fortunate kids fund their education. It was a night of fun and fabulous food apart from some exceptional music from Col Perkins and Sandie Dodd. Their music was absolutely excellent for the event and the dance floor was packed to capacity during the performance. George De Vos, as usual, did a great job with the decor of the venue giving it a typical Wild West ambience. ...

Off the beaten track but on track for a fantastic cause is CDF. BY TREVINE RODRIGO IN MELBOURNE. “Off the beaten track” emphatically encapsulates an ambitious CDF humanitarian project that has minimised time consuming medical aid and transport to patients in the outer regions of Sri Lanka where this service is urgently needed most. The Cyril Dharmawardena Foundation, (CDF) or it’s mission statement, (Compassion, Dedication, Fulfilment), provide non emergency transport vehicles that ferry patients from the villages and outer areas from the major cities in cases of injury and serious illness. The facility mainly provides non-emergency transport to the sick and impoverished in remote and rural communities in Sri Lanka who have been hampered with modern methods of transport for decades. Binara Dharmawardena, son of the late Cyril, heads this important interaction between Australia and Sri Lanka which has been ongoing for a decade. It was a dedication he committed ...

Saints of Nugegoda & St. Joseph’s College Nugegoda Dance – in memory of Ondray Ephraums – photos and write up by Trevine Rodrigo (Melbourne)  Every year for the past fourteen years, the Saints of Nugegoda celebrate the passing of one of its founder members, Ondray Ephraums, who was snatched away in the prime of his life, a victim of the dreaded Cancer. While on reflection it is a sad occasion in many ways, Ondray’s family representing St. Joseph’s College Nugegoda and Bertie Ekanaike from home town school St. John’s College Nugegoda, have joined forces and choose to celebrate his life on this day between the respective schools. Bertie Ekanaike was instrumental in the initial pairup, after deciding to first felicitate his old school, then accepting Ondray’s proposal about a joint event between the two Nugegoda schools 15 years ago. Ondray never lived to celebrate the second event. Thus began the ...

The Walawwa in Melbourne Celebrating Sri Lanka’s Sinhalese and Tamil New year – by Trevine Rodrigo (Melbourne) The Walawwa in Melbourne continued its tradition of celebrating Sri Lanka’s Sinhalese and Tamil New year which is an important date for expatriates in Australia. In true fashion, the night of entertainment had all delicious trimmings including ‘Rasa kavili’ (Sri Lankan traditional food), a lavish smorgasbord dinner and music dished out by Cameron Colombege and Ebony who did more than justice with their excellent choice of music befitting the occasion. Walawwa owners Shehan Wijewardena and Nash Samarakoon, and newly installed Manager, Desmond Foulstone produced a great night of culinary delights and everything that makes Avuruddu celebrations special, to a sellout crowd that graced the event. An added attraction to the nights festivities was the selection of the Avuruddu Kumari and Kumaraya and prizes for the best ‘Baila’ dancers of the night. There was ...
