Doughnuts: A Sweet Treat Perfect for Tea Time – By Malsha – eLanka
Doughnuts, also known as donuts, are delightful deep-fried sweet treats made from a mixture of flour, sugar, butter, and yeast. They come in various flavors and are usually topped with delectable options like chocolate, sugar, or maple glazing. In Sri Lanka, the popular type of doughnut is the ring doughnut, which features a hole in the center and is often enjoyed with a cup of coffee or milk during tea time.
There are two main types of doughnuts: ring doughnuts and filled doughnuts. Ring doughnuts, as the name suggests, have a hole in the middle and are typically adorned with various toppings. On the other hand, filled doughnuts are injected with delicious fillings such as cream, fruit preserves, or custard.
For those who wish to try their hand at making these scrumptious treats at home, here’s an easy doughnut recipe:
Ingredients:
- 200g All-purpose flour
- 20g Butter (Salted)
- 5g Yeast
- ½ tsp Salt
- 20g Sugar
- 100ml Lukewarm milk
- 1 Egg
- Vanilla extract
- Coconut oil
Directions:
- In a large bowl, mix lukewarm milk, sugar, and yeast until well combined.
- Add salt, vanilla extract, butter, all-purpose flour, and the egg to the bowl.
- Mix the ingredients thoroughly using a beater fitted with a dough hook, a mixing machine, or knead by hand for approximately 5 minutes until the mixture forms a sticky dough.
- Spread some flour on a working surface and knead the dough on it.
- Glaze a bowl with butter or oil and place the kneaded dough into the glazed bowl.
- Glaze the top of the dough with butter or oil to prevent it from drying out.
- Close the bowl and set it aside to allow the dough to double in size.
- Once the dough has risen, spread some flour again on the working surface and roll it out to a thickness of around 1/2 inch.
- Use a doughnut cutter or a drinking glass to cut out the doughnuts, and a small shot glass or plastic pipe to create the holes in the center.
- Let the doughnuts rest for about 15 minutes, covered with a plastic wrapper.
- Heat some coconut oil in a flat pan and fry the doughnuts, turning them over until they become light brown in color.
- After frying, sprinkle some ground sugar on the doughnuts for added sweetness.
- Melt grated chocolate using hot milk.
- Top one side of the doughnuts with the melted chocolate.
- To complete the doughnuts, add a generous sprinkle of colorful sprinkles on top of the chocolate layer.
Your homemade doughnuts are now ready to be served. The combination of the soft, fluffy dough with the rich chocolate and sweet sprinkles will surely make your taste buds dance with joy. Enjoy these delectable treats with a hot cup of coffee or a glass of milk for a delightful tea-time experience!
