Homemade Marshmallows – By Malsha – eLanka
A beloved treat for both kids and adults, marshmallows are a delightful confection to prepare at home. Here’s a simple recipe to make your own marshmallows from scratch:
Ingredients:
- 250g of sugar
- 30g of gelatin
- 50ml lukewarm water
- 100ml of water
- 1 teaspoon of vanilla
- A small amount of cornflakes
Instructions:
- Begin by buttering a small tray suitable for setting the marshmallows. Set it aside for later.
- Dissolve the gelatin in lukewarm water and set it aside to bloom.
- In a thick pan, combine the sugar and a small amount of water. Heat this mixture over low flame. You’ll know it’s ready when the mixture reaches the consistency of a syrup that forms a thin string when lifted with a spoon.
- Once the sugar mixture is at the desired consistency, add the dissolved gelatin to it and mix thoroughly.
- Transfer the sugar and gelatin mixture to another bowl and let it rest for about 2 minutes.
- Using an electric beater, whip the mixture at the highest speed for approximately 5 minutes. The mixture will gradually become more fluid and thicken to a white, fluffy consistency.
- Pour this marshmallow mixture into the prepared buttered tray.
- If you’d like to add some color to your marshmallows, set aside a portion of the white mixture. Add a drop of food coloring to the remaining mixture and beat for about a minute. Then, place the colored mixture in the same tray alongside the white mixture.
- Place the tray in the refrigerator for about 45 minutes to allow the marshmallows to set.
- Once set, remove the tray from the fridge, cut the marshmallows into pieces, and roll them in cornflakes for a delightful finishing touch.
Pro Tip: When cutting the marshmallows, it’s helpful to spread some cornflakes on the knife. This ensures that each piece is coated evenly for a satisfying crunch with every bite.
Enjoy your homemade marshmallows, a sweet and fluffy treat that’s sure to delight both young and old alike!
