AN INSPIRATIONAL MESSAGE FOR THE MONTH OF FEBRUARY 2018 – Courtesy of Minoli Haththotuwa “Because you have made the Lord who is my refuge, even the Most High, your dwelling place, no evil shall befall you, nor shall any plague come near your dwelling.” (NKJV) These verses bring to my mind the picture of a little toddler trying to find his way through a crowded place, like a big and busy airport. He is surrounded by a sea of legs and he feels quite confused, lost and alone, as he looks up at people who are all bigger and stronger than him. He is afraid and longs for his parents, and he begins to cry out loudly for his Dad just when his father finds him and picks him up. Suddenly the crowd around him is not scary any more, as his 6 ft 4 father holds him close! He ...

“A HOLE IN ONE” by Des Kelly     Allan was a man of rare wisdom and compassion, who passed away suddenly & unexpectedly after an accident. To explain this a bit further, “suddenly” was very slightly stretched out, “unexpectedly”, was under-done, and the “accident” was one, “waiting to happen”.      The wisdom & compassion of this man was evident in the note-book, lying beside him, in their “Retirement Village” bungalow, as Allan was a happily married man whose lady Carol,  was his only “trouble & strife”. The “note-book contained some “good advice” from Allan.      It is most important for men to remember that as women grow older it becomes much harder for them to maintain the same quality of housekeeping as when they were younger. They also start to look uglier, bedraggled & tired. When you notice this, try your best not to yell at them. ...

“TAKEITBACK AIRBAGS” by Des Kelly    Oops, sorry about that. eLanka readers, all, if you notice it, my fraudulent “title” to this story, does contain this “dangerous” tidbit that is a big part of “supposedly-safe” vehicles of our modern World. Takata-Airbags, have the letters “T A K A T A” clearly noticeable in my ” heading”.      Millions of them, from all over the World, have been now recalled. Originating from Japan, there was a time, and I remember it well, when we, in Ceylon received a “gift, made in Japan, we thought of it as a “bonus” because the Japanese always seemed to produce “superior-stuff”, but now, we have to make certain that everything is made in Australia. After all, who would want to install “air-bags” in their cars/vehicles, that explode on impact ? Bad enough that you are in a bloody accident, but then, when shrapnel shoots out ...

Venerable Galkande Dhammananda’s visit to Australia Venerable Galkande Dhammananda, Executive Director of the Walpola Rahula Institute of Sri Lanka visited Australia in early February and participated in several events in Perth, Sydney, Canberra, Adelaide and Melbourne. His visit was prompted by the invitation he had received to address a symposium on Australia and Buddhism in Perth. During his visit, he met with Sri Lankans of all ethnicities and religions, as well as many other Australians. His message throughout his presentations was that real and lasting peace amongst individuals, and communities, could not be achieved without first healing the mental wounds everyone suffers from to varying degrees of intensity. Through such a healing process, first by healing oneself, and then extending that to others through a better understanding of the wounds others may be suffering from, and assisting them in the healing process, equanimity and peace with oneself and with others ...
