It’s anyone’s flag as the Hawks tumble and the Swans soar to the top by Trevine Rodrigo   It’s incredible what a few weeks can unravel in football mainly when the purists have decisively penciled in who will win the flag this season but are stumped when the favourites fall by the wayside in the last few rounds, throwing open a myriad of other scenarios. Hawthorn, three time champions over the past years and strongly tipped to make it a “Fourthorn’ as their diehard fans like to refer to it, have tumbled from top spot to fourth on percentage with a shock loss to last year’s losing Grand Finalist West Coast and suddenly appearing to show chinks in their amour, or are they just fencing before making that decisive final thrust? Time will tell if the opposition have worked out strategies to nullify the mighty Hawks but one thing that ...

Iron deficiency anaemia by Dr Harold Gunatillake Iron deficiency anaemia is quite common among women especially during child bearing age, among rich and the poor equally. It is difficult to explain why the rich and the affluent classes also should suffer from iron deficiency when they could well afford to buy foods rich in iron. The poorer classes suffer from malnutrition and iron deficiency due to poverty and the unhealthy environments they dwell. Another reason why young women, including the teenagers become anaemic is due to irregular excessive uncontrollable menses. Doctors call this ‘menorrhagia. The simplest way to control this problem is to go on the contraceptive pill which automatically regulates the menses. ...

”  LEST WE FORGET ” by Des Kelly “the Star of eLanka’ A phrase, unfortunately, that we have been hearing far too often nowadays but, at the same time, a phrase that is MOST IMPORTANT, in modern times, to help us REMEMBER terrible incidents that have happened over the past few decades, incidents that should NEVER have occured, but for the fact that we DO live in a CATASTROPHIC WORLD,that only seems to get WORSE with each passing day.(I’m sad to say). WORLD WARS, (a multiplicity of them), still go on, even as I write this “sad story”, National conflicts, like the ones that never should have happened in God’s 2nd “Garden of Eden”, Countries that have ended up in the senseless genocides of their OWN bloody people. Earthquakes, Tsunami’s, & the like, unhappily caused by HUMAN BEINGS, many, who are under the stupid impression that they can tamper with ...

How low-profile Dilip stunned the big names Source: Maitland Mercury SEEING RED: Dilip Kumar whose Dimbulla tempranillo shiraz caused a stir when it was named top red in the recent Hunter Valley Wine Show. Chances are you haven’t heard of Dimbulla wines. Don’t worry, until recently a lot of Hunter Valley wine people probably hadn’t either. But they do now. Located in the “back blocks” at the far northern end of wine country, this tiny operation with a very low profile stunned the industry when they were awarded best overall red wine at the recent Hunter Valley Wine Show. Not only that, but in territory where shiraz is the undisputed red wine king, they did it with a blend made up mostly (75 per cent) of the Meriterranean varietal tempranillo, and the remainder shiraz. ...

THE BURGHER ELITE AND KANDYAN DANCE September 9, 2016, 7:32 pm By KAMALIKA PIERIS Several members of the Burgher elite of the twentieth century took an interest in Udarata dance. Dr Andreas Nell (1864-1956) was a medical specialist in eye diseases working at Victoria Memorial Eye Hospital, Colombo from 1905-1924. He was educated at Trinity College Kandy. He was interested in Sinhala culture and had written on many aspects of it, including ‘Some Trees & Plants of Mahavamsa’. Nell had supplied a brief essay, probably as ‘programme notes’, to the recital of Kandyan dance organized by the 43 Group in Colombo in July 1945. Neville Weeraratne says these ‘authoritative notes on the Kandyan dance’ are worthy of reproduction. The essay, however, is not listed in Goonetileke’s ‘Bibliography of Ceylon’ and is no longer available. In his essay, Nell had noted that a good traditional dance troupe should show the following dances, ...

Let’s talk about Heartburn’ by Dr Harold Gunatillake Nobody escapes the experience of at least one episode of heartburn in one’s life. It is very common in infants and they do suffer with it. Keeping and holding the kid upright is essential in such an eventuality. What is heartburn? It has nothing to do with the heart. The burning feeling comes in the lower gullet which lies behind the heart in the thoracic cavity and you get the feeling that your heart is burning. How does this happen? ...
