India rout Sri Lanka once more sending an ominous warning to the rest in the World Cup. – BY TREVINE RODRIGO IN MELBOURNE.  (eLanka Sports editor). India sent tremors through the World Cup with another demolition of a completely out of tune Sri Lanka and duck season would best describe the Islanders pathetic run chase at Wankhede stadium. If there were doubts about the one sided Asia Cup final, India dispelled all of them as their bowlers ran riot to give them five more runs, 50 all out in the Asia Cup, and 55 all out here and a 302 run win. Chasing 357 Sri Lanka were never in with a chance as Mohamed Shami and Mohamed Siraj wreaked havoc on a clueless Sri Lanka batting line-up after Jasprit Bumrah prised out usually consistent Pathum Nissanka in his first ball.  This set the stage for what could be a record five ...

Undermanned All Blacks undone by ferocious Springboks.   One point nail biter makes South Africa the only four time World Cup winner. – BY TREVINE RODRIGO IN MELBOURNE.  (eLanka Sports editor) Fourteen players for most part of the game did nothing to make the All Blacks fall over and surrender,  but they did  fall short as South Africa lifted the World Cup rugby for a record fourth time in a one-point thriller at Stade De France stadium in front of a sold out crowd. Reduced to fourteen men in the 29th minute when All Blacks skipper Sam Cane was yellow carded for a crude head high collision, it was later upgraded to a red, which put pressure on the All Blacks to cover the advantage handed to the Springboks for nearly 60 minutes.  Millions of fans were glued to an epic confrontation between two of the best teams ever to play the game. ...

Return of Angelo Matthews, the man with the Midas touch transforms Sri Lanka’s fortunes. England perish under new look Sri Lanka. – BY TREVINE RODRIGO IN MELBOURNE(eLanka Sports editor). Angelo Matthews turned out to be Sri Lanka’s new good luck charm and Kusal Mendis warmed to his role as skipper leading the Island nation to a convincing 8 -wicket victory over defending World Cup champions England in Bengaluru.  Shell- shocked England, currently languishing at the bottom of this edition, had no answers to a revitalised Sri Lanka, as Matthews provided the Midas touch, after Jos Buttler won the toss and elected to bat. The bowlers, at long last, hit superb lengths with good line and accuracy to destroy England’s strong batting line-up, dramatically changing the leather hunt they were on in the first three games.  And this made it so much easier for Sri Lanka’s batters to romp to an ...

Netherlands destroyed by ‘Cyclone Maxwell’. – BY TREVINE RODRIGO IN MELBOURNE.  (eLanka Sports editor ) Delhi was rocked by ‘Cyclone Maxwell’ as the hapless Netherlands were reduced to rubble in a one-sided World Cup game that resurrected Australia’s chances of making the top four. An outrageous show of unbridled aggression from Maxwell tore the Dutch attack to shreds as they raced to the biggest winning margin so far after amassing 399 for 8 and then reducing the shell shocked Netherlands to 90 all out in just 21overs. Maxwell smashed the fastest century in World Cup history posted only 14 days ago by South African Aiden Markram 100 off 49 balls, scoring 100 off only 40 balls in a breathtaking array of strokeplay all around the wicket.  The freakish Australian, who has been pretty subdued by his own standards recently, exploded in emphatic fashion to put Australia on course for victory ...

Angelo Matthews added to Sri Lanka squad replacing Pathirana. – BY TREVINE RODRIGO IN MELBOURNE. (eLanka Sports editor) Sri Lanka’s desperation to be competitive in the World Cup has seen the dramatic inclusion of Angelo Matthews to the squad replacing injured paceman Matheesha Pathirana as a substitute.  The veteran,  who has a wonderful record in all formats for a considerable period,  was rushed in as a travelling substitute for injured Skipper Dasun Shanaka and Pathirana and any other players in the foreseeable future. If it was a like for like replacement, Dushmantha Chameera should have got the nod ahead of Matthews similar to Chamika Karunaratne replacing all-rounder Shanaka.  But the Sri Lanka think tank have made a calculated decision and preferred Matthews due to his allround capability and his invaluable experience. Whether the gamble pays off will reveal itself as their campaign progresses. But the swansong for Matthews, if it ...

The lithe and diminutive Sri Lankan flyer paced her 800 meter run to perfection saving the final burst from around 100 metres to sprint past China’s Wang Chunyu as a stunned stadium watched her blitz the field. The slightly built 18 year old became the jewel in the country’s crown winning Sri Lanka’s solitary Gold medal and then added to her glory anchoring the women’s relay team that won Bronze. Sri Lanka register first win but it certainly wasn’t pretty. – By TREVINE RODRIGO IN MELBOURNE (Elanka Sports Editor)  Sri Lanka wobbled their way to their first World Cup win over the giant killing Netherlands but they made it after after some uncomfortable moments.  Unbeaten so far by the world’s new upstarts in their previous five encounters, Sri Lanka scrambled to a five wicket victory with ten balls to spare and kept that record intact. Netherlands skipper Scott Edwards may have rued his decision to bat first after winning the toss on a grassy Lucknow wicket. Sri Lanka’s seamers Dilshan Madushanka and Kasun Rajitha exploited early movement off the wicket to skittle Netherlands top order and at 91 for 6 it looked like a the game was heading for a lopsided end. Not so,  as Netherlands tail dug in and fought back defiantly, and Sri Lanka’s bowlers lost their grip ...
