OBITUARY : JEHAN RAHEEM – By Hugh Karunanayake JEHAN  RAHEEM  (19. 6. 1935 – 25.10.2023) Jehan Raheem, my  classmate through Royal Prep School and thereafter in Royal College,, and an outstanding  intellect, passed away in his home in New York, yesterday. His demise was mistakenly announced a week ago, but the end was near, and he finally  succumbed to the ravages of cancer in the morning of 25 October. A man given to a wry sense of humour, would have been thinking on the lines of Mark Twain on the unintended falsity, by exclaiming that “rumours of my death are vastly exaggerated”! Born in Hulftsdorf where his father enjoyed a lucrative practice as a lawyer, Jehan was the eldest of nine children, all high achievers, with Jehan the eldest showing the way to his younger siblings. . Of portly build, he was a friendly and genial person very popular with ...

OLD REST HOUSES OF THE JAFFNA PENINSULA-by HUGH KARUNANAYAKE Source:Island Rest houses were the pioneering institutions associated with the hospitality industry in Ceylon of the period between the 18th and 20th Centuries. Readers may be surprised to note that “Rest House” is an institution found only in Sri Lanka. The name seems to be derived from the Dutch term Rust Huys which was the appellation in use when they were originally established during the days of Dutch rule over the island’s maritime provinces. They were originally used as inns or hostelry for the use of the Governor or leading government officials when visiting local areas when there were neither hotels nor proper roads to the island. Its Indian counterpart during days of British rule was called “Inspection Bungalows” or IBs and also as Dak bungalows. Over the years, rest houses in Ceylon became popular places for holidaying and for rest and recreation especially during ...

He would have been 90 years of age if he survived up to his  birthday in February next year. The Henricus brothers grew up in Kohuwela where their father a former Feather Weight Boxing Champion of Ceylon lived.  He served as an administrator of the sport first as Hony Secretary of the Amateur Boxing Association of Ceylon and later as its President. He helped build the Baptist Church in Nugegoda and was its Treasurer for 25 years. The road leading to their property was named Henricus Mawatha in honour of this outstanding family. Alan represented Royal in Boxing, Athletics and Rugby, and won ...

Celebrating 25 Years of Multi-Ethnic Conviviality: Old School Sri Lankans in Australia-By Michael Roberts Adam Raffel, whose chosen title reads “The Ceylon Society of Australia 25th Aniversary Celebrations” The Ceylon Society of Australia (CSA) held its 25th Anniversary celebrations on 28 August 2022 at the Pennant Hills Community Centre. The hall was decorated with balloons and banners celebrating 25 years of the CSA. All this was the tireless handiwork of Pauline Gunewardene, the President of the CSA, with the able assistance of all members of the CSA Committee. There were approximately 80 people in attendance. Pauline presided over the formal proceedings. She highlighted the achievements of the CSA during its 25-year existence, acknowledging the contributions of all former CSA Presidents. A special mention was made of dearly departed CSA Past Presidents Tony Peries and Sunil de Silva, who served the Society with distinction and were affectionately re- membered by all attendees. ...

Viva! The CEYLANKAN reaches Twenty-Five-by Michael Roberts Source:Thuppahis The Ceylon Society of Australia was launched in Sydney in the late 1990s and established branches in Melbourne and Colombo. They also launched a journal entitled THE CEYLANKAN twenty-five years back and the 100th number of this wide-ranging publication hit the posts, desks and couches of its subscribers this week. Hurrah!  These publications have sustained the critical patriotic commitments of Sri Lankans in Australia and abroad in numerous ways; while also stimulating cross-ethnic interaction among some of the Sri Lankan migrants in Australia. Hugh Karunanayake: Founder President, 1998-2004 Note, for instance, the names of the Presidents, Vice-Presidents of the Association and, then, also, the List of Editors: David Goodrich (1998-2001); Sumane Iyer (202-2009); Doug Jones (2009-2021) and Adam Raffel (2001 et seq).           Tony Peries: President 2005-07         Sunil De Silva: 2008-10           Harry de Sayrah: 2011-13           Thiru ...

Quaint By-Ways and Nature’s Ways in Colombo in the 1940s-by Michael Roberts Source:Thuppahis Hugh Karunanayake, courtesy of THE CEYLANKAN, vol XXI/1, January 2018 where the title is “A Naturalist’s Paradise–Colombo in the 1940s” Padda boats along the Negombo Canal Growing up in mid twentieth century Colombo was a fascinating experience to any young person.  That was the era when urban growth was taking place  at a pace that afforded local fauna to thrive at will without any restrictions.  Colombo South  with its tree lined avenues  and  homes with spacious gardens  provided sanctuary to a wide range of fauna ranging from avi fauna to reptiles. As a five year old  just admitted to Royal Preparatory School  I was mesmerised  by the “golden beetles” that lived in the Andara trees that stood on the perimeter of the school grounds on Racecourse Avenue. Many of us five year olds fascinated by the shiny green gold sheen of the ...

A LIFE IN THE LAW – NIMAL WIKRAMANAYAKE (BOOK REVIEW) – By Hugh Karunanayake NIMAL WIKRAMANAYAKE QC– “A LIFE IN THE LAW” Published by Hybrid Publishers, Melbourne, Victoria ISBN: 9781925736762(p)            9781925736779(e) ( Available at the publishers Ormond, VIC 3204, P.O. Box 52  Tel: (03) 9504 3462)   Nimal Wikramanayake QC ’s autobiographical memoir “A LIFE IN THE LAW” ‘ has all the ingredients necessary for it to join the ranks of the best sellers. I say this despite the fact that his book concerns a specialised subject viz law, and speciality areas are generally not for the general reader. This book however is different. It is a “no holds barred” story of the inner workings of the almost highly cloistered workings of the legal profession in Victoria. Written in a an easy-to-read style laced with humour and scores of personal anecdotes to illustrate the essence of his message, it’s ...
