TRAVAILS OF AN EARLY COFFEE PLANTER – by Hugh Karunanayake If one lived in Sri Lanka in the mid 1900s, a name such as F.L. Dick would have raised more than a few titters. The unfortunate man lived in Ceylon a century before such a possibility, in an age when neither “F.L.” nor Dick meant anything other than a mere name. Frederick Lacy Dick was the elder son of Samuel Dick a wealthy landowner from the Isle of Wight who invested heavily in opening up coffee plantations in Ceylon in the mid 1800s and which eventually succumbed to the ‘coffee crash’ of the time. Fred and his brother who came out to Ceylon to manage their plantations lost their means to a livelihood as a result of the coffee crash. OBITUARY IINEZ SOURJAH (6-10-1929- 8-9-2021) by Hugh Karunanayake It is with much sadness that I refer to the death of a dear friend, CSA member Inez Sourjah who passed away in her sleep in the afternoon of 8 Septmber 2021. Inez was the dearly beloved wife of the late Dr Robert Sourjah who passed away last year. She was the mother of Rohan and Lalin. Rohan is of course the founding Hony Secretary of the Ceylon Society of Australia, a foundation member, who has rendered yeoman service in the formation of the Society nearly 25 years ago. I recall the pre-foundation dinners that were hosted by a small coterie of friends and fellow travellers in pursuit of memories and links with an almost forgotten country then called Ceylon. Dr Brendon Gooneratne-by Hugh Karunanayake Source:Island (28 March 1938- 21 June 2021) Dr Brendon Gooneratne, acclaimed physician, entrepreneur, author, antiquarian, collector,environmentalist and all round sportsman, passed away in Badulla where he was receiving treatment after a fall. The news of Brendon’s demise was communicated by his daughter Devika just a day following his death. Towering in physique, and with a broad bodily frame, Brendon was physically outstanding in any crowd. To add to that, he had a dominating, outspoken, and fearless attitude to life, which partly accounts for the many successes that he achieved during a multifaceted and unique lifetime. Sunil de Silva – by Hugh Karunanayake My acquaintance with Sunil De Silva was mainly after he migrated to Australia in the early 1990s when I encountered him at a Sri Lanka Association dinner which he attended in formal attire replete with a curved pipe, (ala Sherlock Holmes) firmly placed in his mouth. We immediately acknowledged each other, he recognizing me as a senior student from his old school and as a fellow denizen of a small town in Colombo called Pamankade. I of course had seen him first as a rather rotund young hosteller at Royal College in around 1951/52, given to streaks of impish behaviour. No signs then of the great future that awaited him. It is one of the few buildings in Sri Lanka which link the Portuguese period of occupation of Sri Lanka right through the Dutch, and British periods, to independent Ceylon, and finally exists as a repository of culture of the Dutch who unsuccessfully sought to conquer the whole country.
