Subsequently a WhatsApp message was sent to me on 6th February 2022, inquiring as to whether I was working at the Polonnaruwa Hospital in the’80s. He said my name was familiar to him as his parents had mentioned it on several occasions, indicating that I was the surgeon who saved his life through surgery at the Polonnaruwa Hospital, when he was just one month old. ‘THE TRAGEDY OF A BURNT GULLET’-by Dr Gamini Goonetilleke Source:Drgamini Let me begin with a short story … For 42- year old Somalatha, working overseas as a housemaid promised to be that fabled ‘green pasture’. Having slogged as a servant in Colombo households to earn a living, the prospect of going abroad held much appeal. She dreamt of a new country, a new life, a new job, and a new lease to her existence, having suffered much along life’s rocky road. It was with this hope and anticipation that she left Sri Lanka, never expecting that a cruel twist of fate would see her back home in two months rather than two years. For reasons not known, her employer overseas had forced her to swallow a solution containing acid used to clean the toilet. This cruel act had caused her much pain and she was admitted to the hospital. On recovery ...

The Dawn of Red Ball Cricket in Polonnaruwa – 1982 – by Dr Gamini Goonetilleke The First Red Ball Cricket match in Polonnaruwa – 5th December 1982 Source:A Surgeon’s Tales “Reminiscence of a Surgeon” – Dr Gamini Goonetilleke “This story is about the introduction of red ball cricket to Polonnaruwa. It is an event that took place thirty eight (38) years ago and is not an easy task to recollect everything in detail. I also wanted to include some photographs as they an integral part of any story. I must admit that I could not find all the photographs taken at that time. However, those that I was able to find, depicted our youthful looks and including these photographs in the story was fully worth at the end. Being one of the pioneers, I have done my best to gather my thoughts in this short article to bring out the ...

Flying to the Northern Warfront in the 1990’s – by Dr Gamini Goonetilleke Source: A Surgeon’s Tales “Reminiscence of a Surgeon” – Dr Gamini Goonetilleke “I was never a military surgeon!  I was not even enlisted as a volunteer doctor to serve in the Sri Lanka Army Medical Corp. I gathered considerable experience in the management of war casualties while working as the only surgeon at the Base Hospital, Polonnaruwa. I wanted to use that experience for the benefit of the army personnel injured in conflict. Thus I volunteered my services to treat the armed forces injured in battle in the North”. Background The explosion of a Landmine in Thirunelvely in the Northern city of Jaffna on the 23rd of July 1983 originated the onset of clashes between the Sri Lankan Armed Forces and The Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) in the Northern Province. This phase of the war was ...
