EDELWEISS – by Desmond (Kelly from Colombo)      Everyone who knows anything about music, knows the the above “song” from Oscar Hammerstein’s beautiful film, “The Sound of Music”. Everyone should also know that “Edelweiss” is actually a little white mountain flower that grows mainly on the rocky ridges of mountains at, and around the apex of these tors. So “Edelweiss” can be categorised  simply as a tiny “wild mountain flower”.      I have had this “idea” of my own version of another beautiful film from way back, entitled “Romeo & Juliet” the BEST version of which, in my opinion, was the 1936 version, Starring the very beautiful Norma Shearer as Juliet & Leslie Howard as Romeo.      My “Romeo & Juliet” (in case anyone who reads the “texts”  of eLanka is interested) will have to be an “Alpine-version” of this beautiful, but touching story. The names of the “actors involved” will have ...

How much water should you drink a day – by Dr Harold Gunatillake You lose about 10 cups of water every day just living, urinating, sweating, in your breath and you need to compensate that amount. One can assess whether one is dehydrated from the volume of urine pass per day and from the colour. Darker the urine, like the colour of concentrated apple juice, you are less hydrated. Drink sufficient water to keep the urine a lighter and pale in colour, then you have drunk adequate amount. You can assess whether you are dehydrated from your body weight. You lose weight as you lose water. When dehydrated you could pinch your skin, and loses its shine. Using moisture rises in addition to drinking adequate amount keep your skin healthy. UNFORGETTABLE WRITERS RICHMAL CROMPTON LAMBURN. In these days of Computers, iphones, e’mails and various other “modern technologies”,writers such as Richmal Crompton would be all but forgotten,I repeat, all but forgotten because, were it not for these same “technologies” the general public would not only have forgotten this brilliant lady, they would then know absolutely nothing about her. It certainly seems to be a peculier”state of affairs” that now, in this day and age,our children and grand-children do not seem to be at all interested in actually reading a book, All they do is hold a miniature contraption in their little hot hands and tap, tap, tap,— until their fingers end up with the “repetitive strain” syndrome and begorrah!!, they can then choose from a 1001 “computer-games” or read anything they want to,about anyone they want to,in two seconds flat, yet, no REAL BOOKS whatsoever adorn the shelves in their rooms. ...

POKEMON GO,& CHANGES, GALORE “TO THE “NAME” OF THIS NEW STUPID “GAME” FOOLISH PEOPLE CHOOSE TO PLAY BEFORE YOU MAIM OR KILL SOMEONE I HAVE “ONE” WORD TO SAY YOU’RE JUST AN “APP”THAT SOME SILLY “SAP” WILL REALIZE ONE DAY I’LL SAY IT NOW, VERY POLITELY:- PLEASE! , “POKEMON GO-AWAY”. I might be wrong, but, for goodness sake, tell me now, never mind about the pre-teenagers, WHY are these so-called SENSIBLE adults wasting time, that can be put to much better use, without “chasing” mythical little Pokemon INSENSIBILITIES & so help me!!, risking their lives & the lives of others as well, going-after the little “go-fers” for the want of a better word. Very, very recently, a young “adult”, chasing pokemon-GO while DRIVING his bloody car, actually WENT into an outside fence and then DROVE into a home (he did’nt even stop to ring the door-bell),almost killing himself (and others), who ...

JAZZMEN  EXTRAORDINAIRE – By Des Kelly Monday, the 1st of August,2016, just another Monday, heralding the last month of Winter in our Land Nothing “special” about it EXCEPT that sharp at 8 pm., I switched my television onto Channel 2, in Melbourne to watch “Australian Story”, another favourite “show”of mine, that I can strongly recommend to my “eLanka” readers. Naturally, I do not intend “takng-over” from “the box” & “filling-in” what viewers have quite possibly, already seen, but this particular episode intrigued me, in that, it featured two Aussie musicians DON BURROWS & JAMES MORRISON, who, in my own humble opinion, would “class” as two of the very best, not only in Australia, but in the entire “Music Planet,” as it is, at the moment. Don Burrows, for a start, was a “music-lover” FROM the start. A multi-instrumentalist, he not only lived for music, music, in his sensitive hands, lived for him. I remember ...

Kusal Mendis in full flight against Australia in Pallekelle Sri Lanka is best known for its production of Tea around the globe but it also is known in mining circles for producing the best gemstones in the world, mainly Blue Sapphires and Rubies, and amidst that backdrop they were able to unearth two rare gems in 21-year-old Kusal Mendis and Lakshan Sandakan, the latter a debutant, who produced a glittering display which blinded the high riding Australians into submission in Pallakelle, Kandy. Cholesterol Has Done A U Turn! by Dr. Harold Gunatillake – Health writer The food that is considered bad and contributing to heart disease are those containing high saturated fats and not cholesterol Cholesterol never did a U turn; it was just misrepresented and misunderstood. 80 per cent of the cholesterol required by the body for its metabolic processes, including making of hormones and for cell membranes and others, are made in the liver. Some cholesterol is made in the lining of the intestines and individual cells in the body. Even if you do not eat cholesterol containing fatty foods, the liver can manufacture for its body needs. ...
