Vihares and Verandas: Barbara Sansoni’s Magnum Opus-by Michael Roberts Exif_JPEG_420 ………. “Lions from inner wall of PADENIYA TEMPLE” ….      Source:Thuppahis Most versions of this set of amateur reproductions are due to the work done by David Sansoni on amateur mobile-camera pictures taken by Michael Roberts; but the first ‘snap’ of the lion frieze is by Roberts at his Thuppahi worst. A short memo at the end of this production written by the late Laki Senanayake (who passed away on the 20th May 2021) indicates that Barbara’s etchings commenced in 1962 as one aspect of a larger work with Ulrich Plesner and Ismeth Raheem.  So it best to commence this set of limited illustrations by presenting tha MEMO because it is capped by a miniature sketch of the shrine room at Embekke Devale in Barbara’s hand.   ...

Mimi Reinhard, Who Typed Up Schindler’s List, Dies at 107-By Katharine Q. Seelye Sasha Weitman, the son of Mimi Reinhard, held an old photograph of his mother this week in Israel.Credit…Ariel Schalit/Associated Press Source:Nytimes Sometime in the early autumn of 1944 Mimi Weitmann, as she then was, added her name to a list. She thought she would take the risk. Unfortunately she had to use the horrible first name, Carmen, which her opera-loving father had given her; “Mimi”, from “La Bohème”, was the much nicer nickname they settled on later. Sadly, too, she had to add the surname of her dead husband, Yozsi Weitmann, her love since university, who had been shot by the Germans at the gate of the Krakow ghetto as he had tried to escape. Listen to this story. Enjoy more audio and podcasts on iOS or Android. That had happened in 1942. She had been widowed in her 20s, left with ...

Meeyan Ella – spectacular waterfall with a history – By Arundathie Abeysinghe   Situated along the up-county railway line in close proximity to *Ihalakotte Railway Station, Meeyan Ella waterfall has a deep history unknown to the majority. The stream that Meeyan Ella waterfall originates is situated in a location known as Helan-Madiththa on the *Alagalla Mountain Range. Initially, the waterfall fell as a single stream over a rock and flowed over the villages of Thalagolla and Walagoda joining Thalagolla Oya (Oya meaning stream in Sinhala) connected to Ma Oya in Boella.   At present, the waterfall drops as two waterfalls with a gap of approximately 50 meters along two artificially cut grooves on the rock surface. There is a history regarding the origin of the two waterfalls from one waterfall. During the British Colonial Era, a railway line from Colombo to Kandy was constructed by the Colonials to transport goods ...

AN INSPIRATIONAL MESSAGE FOR THE MONTH OF MAY 2022 (MOTHER’S DAY) – by Charles Schokman “If you follow the greatest men of God back to their beginnings, you will often find a mother kneeling to pray.” “Mary quietly treasured these things in her heart.”     Luke 2:19 TLB ‘Some things only a mum can do… like powdering a baby’s bottom with one hand while holding the phone with the other… Spending the day wiping noses, laundering socks, balancing a cheque book, and still mean it when she thanks God for her kids. Some things only a mum can fix… like the cabinet doors her husband couldn’t, and his bruised ego when he found out she could! Broken shoelaces… broken hearts… breaking up with your sweetheart. Some things only a mum can know… like how long it takes to drive from piano lessons to football practice… how many pizzas you need for a sleepover… the number ...

HE THAT IS WITHOUT SIN AMONG THEE – by Capt Elmo Jayawardena Let me start by writing what I perceive somewhat as the truth. The last thing anyone knows in Sri Lanka is the truth. It has always been in masquerade as long as I can remember. I have to trigger this parody at the Rogues’ Gallery in Diyawanna Oya. Of course, this is a generalized version as we must admit there are some among the 225 who are honest leaders. The fact remains they are the minority and could be even a microscopic minority. ‘He that is without sin among thee, let him cast the first stone’. I wonder who can honestly bend down and pick up a rock and throw at those who steal?   They arrive in their SUVs, Mercs and BMWs and enter the power pavilion in Kotte full of pomp and pageantry to take their ...
