“STORIES IN SONG – SERIES 2019.”ELVIS IS ALIVE” – BY Des Kelly HE DIED SO VERY YOUNG, SO MANY YEARS AGO, BUT TO MILLIONS OF HIS “FANS” ELVIS IS ALIVE. THEY STILL CELEBRATE HIS MUSIC, HIS FILMS, HIS CHARISMA, THEY STILL VISIT HIS HOME, GRACELAND, EVERY CHANCE THEY GET, MY ELDEST SON, MICHAEL, TO MY KNOWLEDGE, HAS EVERY SINGLE ELVIS RECORDING EVER MADE.THE KING OF ROCK N ROLL STILL LIVES IN THE MINDS OF COUNTLESS PEOPLE, AND DESERVEDLY SO, BECAUSE, WHEN “DOING HIS THING” IN HIS HEYDAY, NO-ONE COULD TOUCH ELVIS PRESLEY, ON STAGE OR ON SCREEN.  SINCE HE PASSED AWAY, IN HIS EARLY “FORTIES”, THERE HAS NEVER BEEN A LACK OF IMPERSONATORS WHO HAVE TRIED TO EMULATE ELVIS, ALL AROUND THE WORLD. THERE HAVE BEEN VERY GOOD ONES, THERE HAVE BEEN MANY BAD ONES, BUT I WILL SAY THIS FOR ALL OF THEM. EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THEM HAS TRIED ...

“NATIONAL ANTHEMS”(AS THEY SHOULD BE SUNG) – By Des Kelly It was the “Australia Day” The Cricketing Test Match between Australia and Sri Lanka, held at the Adelaide Oval in 1996, a memorable year, in that, it was also the very first time a “Visiting Team” National Anthem was both played and sung at a sporting event, on Australia Day, a practice that has now become a tradition.      This was where this British Singer, Brian Gilbertson comes in. He first sang the Australian Anthem (of course), & then, started on the Sri Lankan one, which brought the entire Sri Lankan & Australian teams to attention. They could not believe what they were hearing, this Englishman singing in Sri Lankan, better, it seems than most Sri Lankan Singers had done before. After he had finished singing, an excited Sri Lankan Cricket fan(and there are millions of them), came up to ...

“THE PARABLE OF THE BIRD-FEEDER” – By Des Kelly A most interesting “parable”, it could not have been said better. This comes to us directly from the analogy of none other than Helen Zille, the Premier of the Western Cape Province of South Africa, via her facebook site.   Most of us have had birds, of one sort or another, as pets. There was a time, not so long ago, I had two or three fairly large aviaries in my backyard, filled with budgies, canaries, love-birds, parrots, and even a cockatoo or three. Birdseed was purchased in10 kilo bags, fresh water had to be provided for all, at least thrice a week, it was a lot of work, yet a pleasure to have them, and show them off to my friends.    All this was very good. All my feathered friends were quite happy,,they had plenty of room to flit around, ...

STORIES IN SONG” SERIES 2019. “San Antonio Baby” – By Des Kelly  I always “connected” Vocalist Raul Malo with a fabulous group called the Mavericks. Ever since a lady-friend presented me with a Cassette tape (remember them ?), of this group of Musicians Extraordinaire, somewhere, during the 70’s, I have always been a “fan”, enjoying everything they did on stage, on records & DVD’s.      Lead Singer Raul, did temporarily leave the Mavericks, to “do his own thing”, which he did well, being the fine, versatile singer that he was, but I am certain that Raul Malo himself felt that he was “missing the Mavericks” (and they missed him, as well), so back he went, to the Band whom I consider to be one of the best “Groups” in America.      Being a Musician/Entertainer, myself, for nigh on 78 years, (I was lucky enough to start at the ...

“JUST FOR A CHANGE” – By Des Kelly  They do not make em like they used to, natural, born comedians, I mean. Graham Kennedy & his mate, Bert Newton teamed up (in the black & white television days), to give us, viewers some unforgettable comedy “skits”, that still bring a smile to my face, 50+ years after they were done in the Channel 9 television studios in Richmond, Victoria.   Without a shadow of a doubt, Graham did become the undisputed King of Television in Melbourne, in the 60’s, but then, he had performers like Bert, Don Lane, “Ugly” Dave Grey and others to give him the necessary “back-up”, when needed, and it would be remiss of me not to mention several pretty, & pretty talented females, for example, Patty Mc Grath (later to become Bert Newton’s wife), who were also on hand, to give Graham the boost he needed, ...

“UNITED, WE STAND, DIVIDED, WE FALL” – By Des Kelly  It is the first day of May, “MAYDAY”, as it is generally known.  It was also a well known “Signal Of Distress”, an S.O.S. if you like, and after I read the Cardinal’s view of the recent happenings in Sri Lanka, I totally “second” everything he says. This is NOT THE TIME for infighting. Many lives have been lost, many more are still in hospital, some seriously ill, and the Government, who was RESPONSIBLE for it all, in the first place, because of utter complacency, are STILL not getting their PRIORITIES in order. As Cardinal Malcolm Ranjith puts it his way, on behalf of eLanka, in Australia, plus many thousands of other genuine Patriots, all over this Planet of ours, I send out one of the BIGGEST “Maydays” of my life, to the incumbent Government of Sri Lanka. Please STOP all this ...

“ONE LADY’S STORY” – By Des Kelly Once again, sent to me by my good friend and eLanka cartoonist Max Gerreyn, is the above lady’s story. I am fully aware that much has been written by many, on the “horrendous happenings” in Sri Lanka, of late, but here is a story that I perused very carefully, and, reading between the lines, cannot help, but be very impressed indeed with the simple, yet heartfelt rendering of a story to remember.   I fully agree with everything she says. “Races, Religions Colour, Caste, or Creed, does not matter in the slightest. What is most important is the fact that EVERYBODY born in Sri Lanka should stand together, as one, if they hope to defeat terrorism, which is rife, at the moment. The same goes for ALL other Countries, as well,  but now, here is “One Lady’s Story” by Shihara Farook. Please take heed. ...

“STORIES IN SONG” SERIES 2019 – “ARE THE GOOD TIMES REALLY OVER”? – BY Des Kelly With everything that has happened in Sri Lanka, “My Lovely Island Home” recently, the last thing I wanted to do, was to bring my “Stories in Song” back into focus, for the many thousands of on-line readers of eLanka, the main website for Lankan/Aussies, plus Lankan/Patriots everywhere. However, what has happened, is now in the past, and, what now, needs to happen, in the future, is to try to ensure that it DOES NOT happen again. Like a lot of my readers, I would concur that this is easier said, than done, but folks, where there is Faith, there is always Hope, and I certainly hope that this tiny Island will now take the necessary steps to make doubly sure, that what occurred on Easter Sunday of 2019, NEVER happens again. The late, great Merle Haggard felt ...

“THE SRI LANKAN WOUNDED” – By Des Kelly      It was heartbreaking enough to hear of all these people, (253 of them, now definitely identified), killed, on Easter Sunday, last, most of them, Sri Lankan, of course, but some, like the wife, daughter &;young son of an English visitor, who died at the Shangrila hotel, absolutely heart-rending to hear about the little children, boys & girls, who had died, minutes after receiving Holy Communion at the Zion Church, in Batticoloa, totally emotional to see actual photographs of these little martyrs, in their coffins, when they should have been outside, in the gardens of the Church, playing and enjoying the sunshine. ALL THIS, NEVER SHOULD HAVE HAPPENED.        Ever since this horrible, mind-numbing tragedy, I have been inundated with dozens of different aspects to this very sad story. Innuendos, excuses, retaliatory measures, expressed, most of them very angry ones, ...

“TREES OF SRI LANKA” – By Des Kelly  “A thing of beauty is a joy forever”, is a “quote of beauty” in it’s own right, so it is with great pleasure that I present this most interesting article on the trees of Sri Lanka, via Gehan de Silva Wijeyeratne, The Sunday Times, of Lanka &, not forgetting Maxwell Gerreyn, of Perth, in Australia, to our many on-line readers of eLanka, wherever you are. There is much talk about climate-change, nowadays. Politicians around the World are suddenly starting to take note about the fact that Mother-Earth is slowly but steadily getting warmer. Better late, than never, I suppose.  Climate-change has been taking place, since the “Ice-age”, I would think, but suddenly, everybody wants to “get on the  band-wagon, so to speak, to put in their two cents worth, on the subject. Getting back to “Trees”, not too long ago, everyone was ...
