“HAVE A GOOD HOLIDAY” – By Des Kelly Seems very strange that even as I was thinking about all the public holidays now enjoyed in Australia, Christmas day, Boxing day, New Year’s day, May-day, , the Queen’s birthday, Good Friday, Easter day, Melbourne- Cup day, plus one or three more special days, where everyone in this great big Land celebrates them in their own inimitable fashion.       Then, out of nowhere, I get this copy of the Sri Lankan Government’s Gazette, declaring their Public and Bank Holidays for 2020, showing the full list, which gets me thinking of yet another “title” for our little homeland in the Indian Ocean. Lanka has been proudly called many things, the Pearl of the Indian Ocean, Tear-drop of India, among others, so I have now decided to call her “Holiday-Island”. Here folks, is the reason why.    Desmond Kelly.  (Editor-in-Chief)—eLanka.. Govt issues gazette declaring ...

“FOOD FOR THOUGHT” – By Des Kelly   An excellent thought-provoking idea from Neville Davidson, Editor of the Burgher Association in Melbourne, has just arrived, via e’mail, and I lose no time in reiterating his words for the benefit of all our eLanka readers around the World. I am sure that Neville will agree with me when I say that it really does not matter where we Sri Lankans now reside, we should do everything possible to feed the hungry, whenever & wherever possible. Far too much food is being wasted in THIS Country and every effort should be made, to have all this excess food “collected” and sent off, under refrigeration, of course, to our neighbour 3rd World Countries where food is scarce & people and children are practically starving. Oh, I know that this is being done, even as I write this, BUT, our Governments EVERYWHERE, don’t ...

“STOP THE BOATS” (AGAIN) – By Des Kelly They say that “history repeats itself”. Well, for just a while there, the Australian Government did stop the boats from illegally entering this great brown Land, so enticing to thousands of refugees from all over the World. Lately, IN the Country (called the Lucky Country, by many people), we have had different problems to deal with, including, for example, the “homeless” folk, both old and young, many varied Royal-Commissions, left, right, & centre, the Adani Mine, and a potentially impossible loss of a term of  Government,  by the present Opposition or Labor Party, in the General Election held very recently. NOTHING is really impossible, and well, Labor not only “lost”, but lost comprehensively. So, this means that, for the next three years, we now have a “majority” Liberal/ National Party to run the lucky Country & stop any unlucky happenings, hopefully, (he says). ...

“AS WINTER BECKONS” – By Des Kelly Charmaine Gunatillake has written a very good piece of advice for all of us. “And, then, it is Winter,” clearly shows,  Each and every one of us follow the four Seasons, Spring, when we are born, Summer, as we go thru life, it’s good and bad, happy and sad, Autumn, the age of retirement, to either reap the benefits of a life well lived, or, end up bankrupt, sad and sorry for ourselves, financially speaking, to “finish-up”, “As Winter Beckons”, cold, homeless, and sleeping on the Streets, somewhere. This is sometimes, the reality of it. Finally, as Winter makes it’s way thru life, as Charmaine says, WE DIE!!.It all sounds very final, but folks, it is the Gospel truth. We are born, we live, we get old (only to be thrown on the scrapheap),in many cases, and then we  “cark-it”, as they say in Australia. I think ...

“A TERRIFIC TRIO” – By Des Kelly A big hello to all my readers of eLanka, in keeping with everything that has been happening in our little Island Paradise of Sri Lanka, to hopefully bring about a “change of plans”, redirect tourists back to “My Island Of Dreams”, or even, to “My Lovely Island Home” which, incidentally, were two Original Compositions of Clarence Wijewardena and “your’s truly”, also revive a “change of heart” in bringing back the many golden memories that would always be a “dowry”, if you like, of each and every Sri Lankan who still lives there, plus thousands of us, ex-patriots now residing in all corners of the Globe.      My good friend, Neville Davidson, Editor of the Burgher Association, In Melbourne sent me this very funny little account of how we “Burgher-Buggers” spoke, in what was Ceylon, in the good old days. I reiterate that ...

“VERY GOOD ADVICE” – By Des Kelly To :- Each & every reader who reads this, it is a true story, making it abundantly clear that LIFE, in the context of time, is a second or two (depending on you) & to now continue, in “Poetic-Phraseology”      “IT IS EASY TO SEE WHY,       WE ARE BORN, LIVE, & DIE,        IN THE BLINK OF AN EYE,        AND THIS IS NO LIE”.   D.K.        Desmond Kelly.  (Editor-in-Chief).–eLanka. Steve Gouves dies a billionaire, with a fortune of $ 7 billion, at the age of 56 from pancreatic cancer, and here are some of his last words: In other eyes, my life is the essence of success, but aside from work, I have a little joy, and in the end  wealth is just a fact of life to which I am accustomed. At ...

THE PARSI’S OF SRI LANKA – By Des Kelly There is a “saying”, it’s not what you know, but WHO you know”, and this is very true. Parsi’s did not abound in Sri Lanka or the Ceylon, I knew, yet, as I remember them, Parsi girls were some of the prettiest in the Island. No names or pack-drill, as they also say, but I did know one or three of these beautiful lasses, and, for those of my readers that recall this tiny Community, the complexion of Parsi women, in my opinion, was flawless. Skin colour is irrelevant. It really does not matter what colour you end up with, you are normally born “pink”, & you are “grey” at the end of your day,  the Sinhalese are quite often, dark-skinned, Tamils sport an even darker skin-tone, Burghers are generally fair-skinned, but, the Parsi gals I knew had olive complexions that ...

“STORIES IN SONG” SERIES 2019 –  “SAM, THE MAN” – By Des Kelly George Jones, alias “no-show Jones”, or “the Possum”, has, and always will be, one of the greatest Country Icons that America can boast of, and deservedly so, because he could sing a song that would go straight into the hearts of thousands of his listening audience, either on-stage, or via the hundreds of Radio Stations of the US, committed  24.7, to ONLY Country Music. George Jones died in April, 2013, & his fans lined up for kilometres around, just to glimpse his body for the last time. Thousands gathered in the Streets around to salute the hearse as he went on his last ride.  He was 82 years old.    I will feature George Jones himself, later on, but, even before he died they were singing songs titled “Who’s gonna fill their shoes”?, and many, were the Country ...
