DESMOND KELLY

“DEAD OR ALIVE” – By Des Kelly & We love Dead more than Living!   A truly amazing story, by an author-unknown, has been forwarded to us, at eLanka. We truly appreciate these stories which point out the “morals” of today‘s Society-in- general. This unfortunate (or fortunate) “dead man walking” really finds out who his REAL FRIENDS are, but had to “die” to do it. If this story does nothing else, at least it points out that we have to be very careful indeed, as to how to choose our friends. We could well have “associates” in the hundreds, but true friends could generally be counted on the fingers of one hand. It is rather difficult to believe all the facts and figures in this story folks, but do read it, before you start scratching out many names out of your own little “black-book”. You have been warned.!!.          Desmond ...

“HELP” – By Des Kelly   Yet more “Stories in Song”. Everyone knows, or should know, the story of the famous “unsinkable” Ship, “Titanic”,  Built to withstand rough or stormy seas that other Ships wouldn’t have a chance in, the Captain & Crew of this huge 4 funneled “Lady of the Sea” were so confident that nothing could prevent the Titanic from transporting it’s passengers in ultimate safety, they did indeed become somewhat careless and hit this gigantic iceberg, resulting in the sad fact that most of the passengers on board were facing death by drowning, which did occur in the next two hours.      Had it not been for the good Ship “Carpathia”, many more would have died, as the article below, points out, but, on the night of the 14th of April, 1912, the Ship’s Band kept playing the hymn,  “Nearer my God, to Thee” ...

“NOBODY’S CHILD” – By Des Kelly   A somewhat different “introduction” to the true story that follows, is an old song that I have sung many times in the past. It was written in 1949 by Cy Coben & Mel.Foree, and immediately chosen by Hank Snow, a Canadian Country Singer, who recorded on the Atco Records label, making it one of his first standard hits.      As I have always said, right from the very start, it was Country Music that “painted” the stories of “life” as it happened. There are many “sad songs” in Country Music, yet, these “stories” have to be told, in a way that they will then become unforgettable. This particular story is also about an “Orphan”, the one in the song being even sadder because of the blindness that affected him.       However folks, please listen to the song, read the relevant article, ...

“A PROUD BENEDICTIAN” – By Des Kelly St. Benedict’s College, in Ceylon, as I remember it, was another famous Catholic School from which emerged many Benedictians who left College to make a name for themselves in various fields of endeavour. Mark Gerreyn was one who did exactly this. At a time when there were many “Artists” around, Mark took this talent even further, to eventually become one of the best Cartoonists in our little Island.      Mark was the elder brother of Maxwell Gerreyn, a personal friend and regular contributor of Cartoons, himself, to eLanka, it seems that the brothers-Gerreyn were both extremely talented, and although I had never met Mark, and as he has now passed-on (R.I.P.Mark), I did request Max to fill me in, with some details of this other famous Cartoonist of Sri Lanka, and sincerely thank him for his story of the brother who he ...

THE STRANGER I GREW UP WITH & “THE INTRUDER” – By Des Kelly At some time in our lives, we do have to expect some intrusion into family circumstances, intrusion into even carefully laid out plans, changing life as we know it.  We never know when to expect them, but if an intruder enters your home, you must always be prepared to deal with whatever happens with minimum fuss.      This is a true story, and after you read it, you will understand that while some intruders are not welcome, there are others who will undoubtedly put a smile on your face.               Desmond Kelly.             (Editor-in-Chief).   eLanka. *THE STRANGER I GREW UP WITH !!!* A few years after I was born, my Dad met a stranger who was new to our city. From the  beginning, Dad was ...

“TOGETHER AGAIN” – By Des Kelly “THE SAME PLACE, TOGETHER AGAIN”. sounds like a great Song -title, doesn’t it ?. This beautiful little video clip was sent to me via Valerie Weerakoon and Charmaine Phillips, and yes, ladies, the Ceylon we knew was also named Seylan, Taprobane, Serendip, by the Persians, Serendib, by the Arabs, Serendivis, by the Romans,”The Pearl of the Indian Ocean, “The tear of India”, “My Lovely Island Home” by your’s truly, & right down to the Sanskrit name  “Simhaladvipah”, split down the middle to be called Simhala (Sri Lanka),dvipah (Island), which of course, it is right now (The Island of Sri Lanka). That said, I would like to thank both Valerie & Charmaine for the message they send, a message of Peace & Harmony for every square inch of those twenty six plus, thousand square miles of what could have also easily been called God’s Second ...

“CREDIT, WHERE DUE” – By Des Kelly “Give credit, where credit is due”, just another English Phrase that is most important in our daily lives. The latest has everything to do with Australian Tennis. Ashleigh Barty, a Queenslander, is now the No.1 female tennis player in the World. This, in itself, is something to boast about, but Ash., as they call her, “gives credit” first and foremost, to the people around her, her family, her trainers, her coach, everybody, in fact, before simply stating, at this Birmingham Classic, that this was something she had hoped to do, for her Country. Not too many know that this Powerhouse of a Woman, also played Cricket, & loved sports in general, since she was a child. Ash.Barty now, HAS something to boast about, but, after watching her play, watching her win, watching her accept the beautiful trophy, and hearing her speak, after the event, ...

“A TRUE LOVE STORY” – By Des Kelly This true story has made my day. Sent via Facebook to me, by my good friend of many years past, Alan Panambalana, if I remember correctly, we were both Students at St.Peter’s College, Bambalapitiya, who went our own ways, only to meet again via FB, very recently. I would like to take this chance to thank Alan very much, for this amazing true love story, which I now “share” with many thousands of eLanka readers, all over this Planet of ours. Far too often, the present World News-Media in general, seem to revel in stories that do anything BUT, make our day. In times where there is so much tragedy, from Global wars, right down to wars raged on our own  roads, correctly called “road rage”, it is rare indeed to read “True Love-Stories”, so, once again, Alan, thank you for this beautiful ...

STORIES IN SONG SERIES 2019 – Moon Songs – By Des Kelly  There is a multitude of “Moon-Songs”. Obviously, this astronomical satellite that orbits the Earth has been the main cause of many a love story, many “Crooners” warbling about her (the moon), an old song of mine, from my Ceylon days entitled “Moonlight, the Danube & You”, The Glen Miller Orchestra signature tune “Moonlight Serenade”, an entire Jim Reeves Album entitled  “Moonlight & Roses”, & I could go on, till the cows come home, “Amsterdam Moon” written and performed by Raul Malo & The Mavericks, a song I do love and hope to record, changing the title (with Raul’s permission to “Sri Lankan Moon” (many of which I have seen, rather than the one in Amsterdam), and now, via Facebook, I have just had the pleasure of listening to one of my favourite Brookes & Dunn melodies “Neon Moon”. ...

V.A.D. VOLUNTARY ASSISTED DYING – By Des Kelly  It has been an important topic of conversation for many a long year, in Australia. Arguments, for & against this sad, but necessary procedure have been on-going, until finally, under the Victorian State Government of Premier Daniel Andrews, it is finally legal for the above, with very strict conditions attached, of course.      Sadder still, it was,for Robert (Bob) Andrews, our Premier’s dad,(as Daniel said), that V.A.D. is now dedicated. According to his son, Bob Andrews went through many stages of cancer, & the suffering that goes with it, before the “big C” finally took his life, and so, as I always say, that it is better late than never, on behalf of every Sri Lankan now living in Victoria, via eLanka, we extend our Sincere Sympathy to our Premier & his family, on the death of the “head” of the Andrews ...
