“HOW TO AVOID ASTEROIDS” – By Des Kelly  Two or three have passed us by, in the last 24 hours, unnoticed because they are skimming across the Universe, at a million miles per second, light years away from this little “blue ball”(thank God), these asteroids have, so far, been no threat to the Earth, as we know it.  However, two 10 kilometre sized asteroids DID hit Australia around 330 million years ago, in the West-Warburton Area, creating a “basin” that covered about 400 kilometres. This is one big bloody basin, still visible to anyone who wants to take a look at it. It is extremely difficult even to imagine the Universe, with it’s trillions of stars, galaxies, black holes, and asteroids hurtling around in deep space, meteorites and sudden “shooting-stars”, leaving a fiery tail, as they vanish from sight. As youngsters, of merely 3 score & 10 years ago, there wasn’t ...

“CRICKET, LOVELY CRICKET” – By Des Kelly And so, it is on again. Cricket, lovely Cricket, the Ashes Series, between the two arch-rivals of the game, England versus Australia. Coming to us via “The Guardian”, and Frank Bennett, this interesting little article gives us 19 things to look out for, in the Series, and, let me add the 20th, which is my prediction for the result of this “test series”. I think that Australia will win the Series, although, not by a big margin. England too, has an excellent team, this time, and Australia will have to fight this battle to the very end. The mere fact that Messrs. Smith & Warner are back in the side, for Australia, will be the difference in the game, I think, but as I have always said (& written),in ANY game, there has to be a Winner & a Loser. The ...

“ALEXANDER’S ADVICE” – By Des Kelly Excellent advice especially for those who have to use the toilet (in a hurry), at night, for any reason whatsoever.  I cannot think of anyone more qualified to give us this advice, and I would like to thank Alexander on behalf of eLanka.  Desmond Kelly. (Editor-in-Chief)–eLanka. One-and-a-half-minute law- EXCELLENT INFO A friend sent this to me & thought I’d pass it on.  Very interesting & informative:   My name is Alexander, I am a cardiologist and a paramedic. A very important warning for those who wake up at night to go to the bathroom.. You must be careful and use the “One-and-a-Half-minute law” which is scientifically proven. By waking up suddenly for one’s physiological needs normally, we often hear that someone “was well in good health and died suddenly during the night without reason. “ The most likely reason is that when that person woke ...

Who thinks this stuff up! – By Des Kelly English has always been a strange, but interesting language. In this particular instance, the prose is solely intended for readers to have a bit of fun, with. From time to time, quotes such as these have come into Facebook, quite a few, not fit to be published, because of the coarse “lingo”involved. As everyone knows, or should know, this writer has never been a “wowser”, swears with the best of them, and will write “HARD”, when I have to, but somehow, do not like to see epithets, four letter words etc., in print.      eLanka readers especially, deserve better, and in this article, “Who thinks this stuff up”, they get it, much better than an article titled “Who thinks this is A stuff-up, I suppose.  Desmond Kelly.  (Editor-in-Chief) eLanka. Who thinks this stuff up? • Venison for dinner again? ...

Very Important Message – By Des Kelly        Once again, a very important message to all our members of eLanka, and, of course, everyone else who reads it, via Roland Phillips & Keith Bennett, regarding Insect killer sprays, and other such products, and how very careful one must be, before using them, especially in the vicinity of gas cookers etc., to avoid being badly burned, in the process. Please read the message and pass it on to everyone you know. Thank you. Desmond Kelly.        (Editor-in-Chief)–   Very important message  Please read this and take note. Let this not happen to you.. This could be a common mistake in any household. This shocking accident happened. A housewife died due to burns sustained in the kitchen. Her husband too was hospitalized for injuries due to burns while trying to rescue his wife. How it happened: The ...

“TO SERVE, WITH PRIDE”– BY DES KELLY Yet another documentary on “British Royalty” was aired on S.B.S.Television this evening, and while I do enjoy seeing shows like this, because of the fact that this IS realty T.V., I was not too pleased with the “Content” of this particular “doco”, as it concentrated on what was termed the “Servants of Royalty”. If there is ONE word of the English language I hate, it is Servant. In my book,  NO-ONE is the Servant of another. “Domestic-Aide” is a much better word, even looking much better in print. There are plenty of Domestic Aides in Sri Lanka now, as there were, in the Ceylon I lived in, and, to be totally honest about it, my family always treated these aides as simply extensions to the family. I feel sure that most of my readers will agree that the aide who helped ...

“PHRASES THAT PLEASE” – By Des Kelly  This writer has always loved phrases. They make for interesting reading in all situations. I have been an avid reader of books, since I was “knee-high to a grasshopper”, talking about phrases, and it was purely because of this first love-affair of mine, that I was able to get the Education I needed, as Maths, Algebra, Geometry, Science, etc., etc., never did interest me. I just loved to read anything I could lay my hands on, used to get a kick out of “sniffing” the pages of “print”, especially from age-old books in the magnificent library of my very first School, the Convent of Our Lady Of Victories, in Moratuwa, at around the age of 6.      First, it was books, then it was the “Stage” at this same School, where Music (something I was born with) & “Acting” came to ...

“CHRISTMAS IN JULY” – By Des Kelly It is on Wednesday the 24th of July, 2019, and tomorrow being “Christmas Day in July”, I felt that a gift, in the shape of a song, should be presented to all my readers, on eLanka, the leading website for each & every Lankan/Aussie, the Lanka Times Newspaper, in Melbourne, plus Facebook, this fairly “new” platform, that I have clambered upon, if only to keep my faculties in good order, while, at 4 score + 3, my physical being has taken a severe beating, to put it mildly.      Christmas in July, is also somewhat of a new fad, brought in merely to help this Commercial World of ours, sell more of it’s Merchandise to Customers who are now more affluent (it seems), than ever before, and need, not just two Christmases, but indeed, two Easters as well, to spend all the money that most ...

“WATER OF GOLD” – By Des Kelly    There used to be a little rhyme or two, about the subject. I am uncertain as to who will remember the little ditty,                “Burgher buggers became beggers,                 after drinking whisky,                 most of them, whom I have known,”                 would then become quite frisky,                 they’ve had brandy, made them randy,                 though, not as much, I’m told,                 but, the cup that got them up,                 was this drink of pure gold”.    D.K.      Of course, in old Ceylon, and now, ...

“MAGNIFICENT MARTYRS” – By Des Kelly So very much is known and revered about Jesus Christ, the Son of God, and, of course, the Virgin Mary, Mother of God, Saint Joseph, (the Carpenter) & surrogate Father of the Boy Jesus, & even major Disciples like Saints Peter & Paul,  Christianity nowadays seems to forget all these other  “Martyrs” who gave their lives for their Faith.        I was born, Christened, and Confirmed, a Roman Catholic, and will remain one, until I die, therefore, this amazing story of martyrdom on the part of so many, purely for their Faith &  Love of this very same Jesus Christ, who gave up HIS own life on a wooden cross, & rose again after three days, intrigued me. Therefore, even though the “stories” are sad ones, these MAGNIFICENT MARTYRS certainly would have won their place with God, in Heaven.   ...
