DESMOND KELLY

“ARTISTRY AT IT’S BEST” – By Des Kelly   Few words are required, in introduction. There is no indication of who this Artist/Sculptor is, or where he or she came from, suffice to say that these are some of the most exciting, beautiful pieces of work that I have ever seen, and, as such, have decided to pass on these glorious exhibitions of Art, at it’s BEST, to be viewed by our thousands of eLanka members & readers, everywhere.       Do take the time to look deeply into each “picture” folks and judge for yourself, the amount of TIME that each of these treasures took to complete, and how long it is going to take in order to keep them looking the way they do. Surely, your sheer wonderment is going to tell you that it IS                           ...

“THEIR MAJESTIES” – By Des Kelly Let us make this one (three items). As far as I am concerned, and as far as ANY Lankan/Aussie should know, the first “King of Our Public Librarians in Australia”, is undoubtedly Victor Melder, a good friend, Patriot, & Walking  Encyclopaedia on all things Sri Lankan. Victor has his own “little library” connected to his residence, spends hours in it, sorting out books, magazines, newspapers, etc., etc., to ensure that all of us, lucky readers, are kept fully aware of everything to do with the Country that both of us were privileged to be born in, before, reluctantly having to leave. I am happy to say that Victor Melder has been duly recognised by the City of Melbourne, for his honorary work, and, take my chance to wish him, his dear wife Esther, & his family, all the very best. Victor is ...

“ELEPHANTS, TOO, COUNT” – By Des Kelly  An excellent idea pertaining to an “Elephant Census”, is now being negotiated in Sri Lanka, realizing perhaps, that it is almost imperative now, to try and take proper stock of this magnificent animal, one that, more than any other, practically symbolizes the Country itself, one that can actually work harder than dozen men, & animals who are trained to be the “Stars” of most big processions or Pereharas, as they are called in Sinhala. Politicians in S.L.,  like  “Pollies” everywhere, seem to procrastinate & get their priorities all mixed up. I would reckon that 95% of Tourists who visit Sri Lanka, especially during the Wesak festivities, will want to get some views of these huge, but beautiful Creatures, to complete their holiday & perhaps even go back there a second or third time, to watch the highly decorated Elephants play their part ...

“DIVE INTO DILLER” – By Des Kelly She was born Phyllis Diver, in 1917 (July 17th)& died, aged 95, on the 20th August, 2012, becoming better known to her public as Phyllis Diller, a Comedienne of no mean repute, she entertained thousands of people with a natural ability that only a few Comedians possessed. “Stand-up” Comedy is one of the most difficult forms if this type of entertainment, as any “Comic” will tell you, but I watched Phyllis (years ago), walk onto a stage and have her audience in the palm of her hand, within minutes.  Purposely groomed, dishevelled hair, her “skits” somewhat raucous at times, she still managed to have some of her fans, at least, rolling in the aisles, so to speak.       We do miss the Diller comedy, but I am proud to feature Phyllis on this special eLanka “show” with some of her comic “prose” ...

A Beautiful story – By Des Kelly The introduction to this beautiful story speaks for itself. I second it, unconditionally, and feel proud to feature this young lady on eLanka, especially for those who love good music. I have always said that a “song” is simply a condensed “story”, so, if ever there was one, THIS IS A BEAUTIFUL STORY IN SONG.   Desmond Kelly. (Editor-in-Chief).  eLanka.   A VERY BEAUTIFUL AND POSITIVE YOUNG LADY WHO MAKES MY   problems looks so small and not worth talking about.  Every day is a special gift Unwrap it, celebrate it, Enjoy. ...

“OLD DADS’ ADS” – By Des Kelly Come to think about it, advertising has been with us since the beginning of time. In the Ceylon of old, when indeed, God created it to be the Garden of Eden, Eve found this “tree” which bore the “forbidden fruit”, then, tempted by Satan (as a snake), she plucked this gorgeous looking apple and, not being satisfied, after tasting it, herself, she then “advertised” it to a reluctant Adam, telling him that if he did “take a bite” he could be just as great as God himself.  Poor Adam fell for the advertising, took a bite, after which, suddenly found out that both he & Eve were naked. Not only that, but then God kicked them out of Ceylon, for being disobedient, and they migrated to Australia to start their family, long long before Captain Cook was even thought of. Adam ...

“THE AGED WRITER” Simple proof that “age” is just a number. As I have always said (& written), in the context of time, life is but the blink of an eyelid. One is born, lives, and dies, in a flash of lightning. What matters is how you live your life. Obviously, at very close to a Century in years, this Gentleman of Sri Lanka, Mr. D.L.Sirimanne would have to be someone who has lived his life to the fullest, would also have to be one of the most interesting people to have a friendly chat with, & I would undoubtedly be privileged to know him. In addition, to learn to write like him would certainly not be the easiest thing to do, as I believe that He is quite the Master of his trade. Folks, herewith, I proudly present “The Aged Writer” to you.   Desmond Kelly.  (Editor-in-Chief)– eLanka. ...

“DIGEST YOUR READING” – By Des Kelly Source:Digest Let it not be said that eLanka ever fails to be interesting. This writer began serious “sniffing” of pages of old print, out of glorious volumes of gilt-edged tomes, at age 5 & a half, fell in love (as they say) with reading, pestering Rev. Mother Brittall, an English Nun, who was Librarian of my 1st School, with teaching me the meaning of those huge 5 letter words, before going on to read anything I could lay my hands on. Say no more. I have always been an ardent fan of a little Magazine called Readers’ Digest, collected them for years, and so if you ever want to “DIGEST YOUR READING” , try this Desmond Kelly. (Editor-in-Chief.)–eLanka. Friends….Do PLEASE  read and ingest the 19 Powerful Quotes on Kindness…Very inspiring Words of kindness Kindness quotes are a good reminder for everyone on ...

“EGGS R EGGS” – By Des Kelly After I joined the Royal Ceylon Navy, in 1953, it wasn’t too long before I was “drafted” to H.M.Cy.S. Elara, in Karianagar, Jaffna, to serve a short term there. All good, excepting the fact that the “drinking water” was the next best thing to having a drink directly from the Indian Ocean, it was so salty, many of us would not have survived, had it not been the beer (my first experience of the Singaporean Tiger beer) that most of us guzzled down, instead of water. On top of that, our duty Cook Steward at the time, was hopeless. Where he learnt to cook, in order to join that “branch” of the Navy, I’ll never know, yet, we were practically starving, and, if it wasn’t for the little “Thosai-joint” in Karianagar town, I wouldn’t be writing this now. Anyway, soon after ...

Stop using “Sir” now ….By Des Kelly Slave, I remain, or Servant, I remain, same thing, equally distasteful. Personally, I have never liked being addressed to, as Sir. It irks me. Not only that, but it annoys me as well. In most Countries, some don’t give a damn anyway, people are born, then Christened with names chosen by their parents. They then grow up (educated or illiterate), as the case may be, to face life the best way they know, how. Some go on to EARN “Titles” , such as “Your Holiness”, or “Your Majesty” (to name just two, on the top rung of the ladder), they are ENTITLED to these titles (pardon the pun), & in the “olde dayes”, if you didn’t use these titles in the right manner, you could get your head chopped off.       Very recently, I wrote an article for eLanka regarding ...
