History of The STC Prefects Group – by Sriyan Jayasekera The Past Prefects of S. Thomas’ College  hosted their 12th Annual Prefects’ Dinner in the premises of The Sinhalese Sports Club (SSC) in Colombo, on 13th March, 2023.  This was following a hiatus of two years on account of the intervening Covid pandemic.  This year’s Chief Guest was General Srilal Weerasooriya, former Commander of the Sri Lanka Army.  The main feature of this year’s event was that it was managed by a committee unlike in the past, when it was organized by a few.  It turned out a roaring success with well over one hundred participants. INTERNATIONAL CRICKET VENUES IN SRILANKA – By Dr. Gnana Sankaralingam On Wednesday February 17 1982, when Bob Willis bowled to Bandula Warnapura, Sri Lanka became the eighth test playing country in cricket. That moment was none symbolic than the country arriving as a force in cricket. The honour of hosting that match fell on Colombo Oval, later renamed as P. Saravanamuttu stadium, the home ground of Tamil Union Cricket and Athletic Club. In seven months since ICC decision to grant test status to Srilanka in July 1981, preparations had been made for this match, and more than £100,000 had been spent on modernising that venue, to increase the capacity to more than 20,000. Hassan had an unblemished record of remaining undefeated without losing a single bout in his school career from the years 1964 to 1968. He won the prestigious Stubbs Shield followed by Junior ABA the year after. He was a brilliant close quarter fighter with a power packed right cross. Deshabandu Anura Tennekoon launches his Autobiography at SSC Thomian and former Sri Lanka Cricket Captain Anura Tennekoon released his Autobiography at the SINHALESE SPORTS CLUB (SSC) in February 2020 in the presence of many distinguished guests including present and past Sri Lanka Cricketers. The books launched in English were titled PASSIONATELY CRICKET and HADAGASMA CRICKET in Sinhala Anura was conferred a Deshabandu award by President Maithripala Sirisena  in 2019 for his contribution to the upliftment of cricket in Sri Lanka and for his services as Team Member and Captain in the Pre-Test  cricketing era. Anura, presently serves as a Consultant to SRI LANKA CRICKET in the Schools Cricket Development Unit.
