Suspension adds insult to injury in its worst World Cup – BY TREVINE RODRIGO IN MELBOURNE (eLanka Sports editor) The saying, “when it rains, it pours”, got true relevance if you look at the current plight of Sri Lanka cricket. Quadruple setbacks from just one outing at the World Cup appears at this stage just the tip of the iceberg, with a rash of more repercussions on its way to the beleaguered nation. They first endured the Matthews controversy, suffered the worst campaign at a World Cup, then got suspended by the ICC and now have been eliminated from the forthcoming Champions Trophy. Return of Angelo Matthews, the man with the Midas touch transforms Sri Lanka’s fortunes. England perish under new look Sri Lanka. – BY TREVINE RODRIGO IN MELBOURNE(eLanka Sports editor). Angelo Matthews turned out to be Sri Lanka’s new good luck charm and Kusal Mendis warmed to his role as skipper leading the Island nation to a convincing 8 -wicket victory over defending World Cup champions England in Bengaluru.  Shell- shocked England, currently languishing at the bottom of this edition, had no answers to a revitalised Sri Lanka, as Matthews provided the Midas touch, after Jos Buttler won the toss and elected to bat. The bowlers, at long last, hit superb lengths with good line and accuracy to destroy England’s strong batting line-up, dramatically changing the leather hunt they were on in the first three games.  And this made it so much easier for Sri Lanka’s batters to romp to an ...

Angelo Matthews added to Sri Lanka squad replacing Pathirana. – BY TREVINE RODRIGO IN MELBOURNE. (eLanka Sports editor) Sri Lanka’s desperation to be competitive in the World Cup has seen the dramatic inclusion of Angelo Matthews to the squad replacing injured paceman Matheesha Pathirana as a substitute.  The veteran,  who has a wonderful record in all formats for a considerable period,  was rushed in as a travelling substitute for injured Skipper Dasun Shanaka and Pathirana and any other players in the foreseeable future. If it was a like for like replacement, Dushmantha Chameera should have got the nod ahead of Matthews similar to Chamika Karunaratne replacing all-rounder Shanaka.  But the Sri Lanka think tank have made a calculated decision and preferred Matthews due to his allround capability and his invaluable experience. Whether the gamble pays off will reveal itself as their campaign progresses. But the swansong for Matthews, if it ...

Angelo Matthews and Dushmantha Chameera rushed in as injury replacements as Sri Lanka reassess lack of experience – BY TREVINE RODRIGO IN MELBOURNE (eLanka Sports editor) Sri Lanka Cricket have awoken to the possibility of its worst World Cup campaign and have desperately rushed in Angelo Matthews and Dushmantha Chameera as replacements if there is injury,  more to save face as the cellar looms large in this edition.  Lack of experience and hamstrung in the bowling department, Sri Lanka have copped a shallacking by opposition batters while their bowlers have been treated with disdain by the three teams they have played against so far. Matthews has a clever cricketing brain and Chameera is the number one choice in their bowling,  the latter suffering from injury that ruled him out of this World Cup.  While Sri Lanka sits at the bottom of the league stage, below Afghanistan and the Netherlands, their ...

Sri Lanka stutter in warm up games but may still provide some fireworks.  – BY TREVINE RODRIGO IN MELBOURNE.  (eLanka Sports editor) Sri Lanka made an inauspicious start to the World Cup losing both warm-up games to Bangladesh and Afghanistan and the writing on the wall about their chances of success seems dismal to say the least.  Just recently they overcame both these teams in the Asia Cup before making the final against India.  But the preparation since has see both Asian neighbours step up their campaigns while Sri Lanka’s course appears at this stage to be heading backwards.  Both losses were convincing, by seven wickets to Bangladesh and six wickets to Afghanistan,  and throws up concerns about the composition of the team that has failed to deliver with and without Skipper Dasun Shanaka who seems to be the focus of attention rather than the team’s overall performance.  Apart from ...
