The TSUNAMI Hit on Sri Lanka, 26 December 2004 on Video & Camera-by Michael Roberts Source:Thuppahis The Video is courtesy of Felix Sirimanne and apart from its awesome pictorial display indicates that 35,322 lives were lost. All of us will be aware of friends or acquaintances whose sojourn on earth was rudely obliterated on that day…. For my part I deploy this recollection of a sad moment to doff my cap to Sujeeva Kamalasuriya, a young man who represented Sri Lanka in its Under 19 tour of Australia in the 1980s and then migrated to Adelaide where he was part of out Lankan cricketing circle. He was holdiaying at Unawatuna near Galle …. as it happens one of my favourite spots for snorkelling from years past to the present — when the tsunami hit and swallowed his life. ...

PICASSO OF PRINT – Gamini Weerakoon – by Joe Van Langenberg With the sad passing of former ‘Island’ Newspaper Editor Gamini Weerakoon, the Fourth Estate, which he had enriched and nurtured over many decades, has lost a huge chunk of its very soul; leaving it’s heart bleeding, wounded, while refusing to come to terms with the harsh reality, that one of its most valued members has crossed over. Mr Weerakoon was the consummate journalist; a stickler for perfection, who had a flair for creativity and an eye for the minutest detail. He was without a doubt, the Picasso of Print. Never one to stand on ceremony, Mr Weerakoon despite been a journalistic Gulliver among Lilliputians, never believed that he was above and beyond any of his colleagues. Unassuming, understanding, empathetic and approachable at all times, Mr Weerakoon mentored many aspiring young scribes along the way. Most of them cut their ...

People Inbetween: Ethnic & Class Prejudices in British Ceylon-by Michael Roberts Source:Thuppahis Michael Roberts …. presenting a talk which he delivered at the National Trust in Colombo in June 2018  following a brief to the effect that he should present motifs from the book People Inbetween. The Burghers and the Middle Class in the Transformations within Sri Lanka, 1790-1960s, (Ratmalana, Sarvodaya Book Publishing Services, 1989) and more specifically its first chapter viz. “Pejorative Phrases: The Anti-colonial Response and Sinhala Perceptions of the Self through Images of the Burghers.” Many think People Inbetween is a history of the Burghers. Not so. It is multi-faceted. It describes (a) the rise of the middle class in British times, an influential force within which the Burghers were a critical element and a vanguard in the questioning of British rule; (b) the initial strands in the development of Ceylonese nationalism and (c) the development of Colombo into a metropolitan hub that became the island’s hegemonic ...

5 Common Kitchen Herbs and Spices for Weight Loss Source:Theepochtimes Nature’s bounty has played an integral role in modern drug development, so is it any wonder some common kitchen herbs and spices have the potential to play a role in weight loss and the fight against obesity? One of the reasons a whole-food diet plays such a crucial role in good health is because it incorporates those very foods, herbs, and spices that possess the ability to heal and support our body. Often these foods are taken for granted, thrown into a soup here or a stew there without further thought to the powerful benefits they bestow upon those lucky enough to consume them. But in fact, natural substances have been a source of pharmacology for years, with many well-known drugs on the market today being derived directly or indirectly from plants (think morphine and aspirin). But when it comes ...

TO ALL OUR RELATIONS, FRIENDS & EMAIL CONTACTS – By Charles Schokman Now that we have come to the end of another year and on the threshold of a New Year it’s good to reflect on the past. Some may have been struck by illness, the loss of a loved one or met with unexpected tribulations. Others may have had everything going well for them. Whatever the situation may be, we are reminded ‘In all things give thanks to God’   In a busy life it is so easy to neglect to say ‘thank you’. It seems to be human nature. Jesus healed ten lepers of their dread disease, but only one came back to say ‘thank you’   God warned his people against ungrateful hearts because that would only lead them to forgetting God and deluding themselves that they had produced the blessings by their own power and ...
