Handapanagala wewa of yesteryear and today-by Mahil Wijesinghe   Source:Sundayobserver Although we had always wanted to visit the Handapanagala wewa (roughly translated as ‘rock where the moon shines’), it just did not happen, due to lack of time after my return trips from the Uva Province. However, one late afternoon on a return trip from Buduruwagala in Wellawaya, we got a chance to visit the Handapanagala wewa The Handapanagala junction is about five kilometres from the Wellawaya town, from where it is a further four kilometres to the Handapanagala wewa, which is in a breathtakingly beautiful remote setting. Lunuganga: Bawa’s homage to nature- By Sarah Souli   Source:Sundayobserver From the outside, the Colombo house of Geoffrey Bawa, the late Sri Lankan architect and pioneer of tropical modernism, does not command much attention. Bleary-eyed from our long-haul flight, my friend Maia and I nearly walked past the white, cube-shaped building, which is partially obscured by trees. We slipped off our shoes and began speaking in hushed tones: even Bawa’s garage called for a temple-like reverence. No.11, named after its address on Bagatalle Road, is in the gentle Kollupitiya district. It’s open to the public for tours; a two-bedroom suite — Bawa’s guest room — is also available for overnight stays for design devotees like me. ...

Balachandran Source:Sundayobserver Personally, a committed Buddhist, who also preached Buddhism, Emperor Ashoka used universally acceptable moral principles to unite and rule his vast Empire with a diverse population. A perusal of the works of two outstanding Sri Lankan scholars on Emperor Ashoka, Prof.Patrick Olivelle and Dr.Ananda Guruge, reveals that as an individual, Ashoka was a committed Buddhist, but as a king, he was secular, using universally applicable moral principles to rule his vast Empire populated by people of different faiths and cultures. Patrick Oliville is an Emeritus Professor of Indology at the University of Texas at Austin USA and the late Dr. Ananda Guruge was Sri Lankan diplomat and Buddhist scholar. Directly or indirectly, Ashoka ruled much of India from the far North up to the Chola and Kerala country in the deep south in the Third Century BC ...
