A night out at Grand Hotel, Nuwara Eliya. – By Dr Harold Gunatillake Website: www.Doctorharold.com My wife and I thought that Nuwara Eliya would be the best place to be during the Sinhala and Tamil New Year festive seasons. We started the trip, along with my nephew’s family on the 15th of April, the day after the auspicious New Year’s Day, and drove through the curvy uphill roads, viewing the most spectacular sites, the wavy lofty hills. Our first stopover was in Ramboda at the Tea Bush Hotel, a spot where every passerby stops to view the beautiful scenery, including the Kotmale Dam in the distance. It is a wonderfully comfortable hotel to stay in or for a quick cup of tea on your way. Good food, kind service with courtesy, and comfortable rooms. The next morning we were on our way to Nuwara Eliya. We passed through the Ramboda ...

A Kelly Klassic – “THE DRINK” – by Des Kelly The most important fact that missed out on telling everybody on Facebook, was that my excellent ‘backing group’ on this recording was the VERY FIRST ALL-AUSTRALIAN GROUP OF GUYS to ever ‘Record’ singing in Sinhala. They enjoyed doing the song with me, and this particular ‘Crest-Recording’ was loved by the thousands of Sunhala-folk who had never hitherto heard Aussies sing in Sinhala. This song & many others are available from e’Lanka, if anyone is interested.  Desmond Kelly. (Mr.Music) (Editor-ib-Chief).. e’Lanka. ...

‘SYBIL’ – showcasing the art works of Sybil Keyt – by Dodwell Keyt I am currently writing a book called ‘SYBIL’ which showcases the art  works of my sister, Sybil Keyt. The book will contain photographs of her  paintings from her early days. It is worth mentioning that Sybil started  painting in school using watercolors. During the interview, we discussed her career and paintings. Despite her  talent, her works have been largely overshadowed by her well-known  husband, Neville Weereratne.  I am currently seeking photographs of my colleague’s paintings to be  included in a book that will be sold on Amazon worldwide. My goal is to  showcase as many of her paintings as possible in the book. The book will be in large format (to be decided) and available in hardcopy and ebook  formats from Amazon.  I’m interested in obtaining any photos of her paintings that may be useful  for my ...

During the nesting season of birds (from February to May) that coincides with the start of the monsoon, this tiny island turns home to thousands of nests, a birdwatchers’ paradise, a mesmerizing site… “Kok Doowa” meaning the ‘island of storks’ due to large numbers of birds, especially, storks (Ciconiidae) nesting on the rock, the island is visited not only by birds, but by elephants, especially those crossing Parakrama Samudraya. During the dry season, when the water levels of the reservoir decreases, visitors can walk across the water towards the island. Yet, when water levels are high, services of a fisherman’s boat to reach the island is necessary. The island has two summits, approximately 200 meters ...

Continues to light up the Melbourne Scene   Esric and Sandra: Rocked the scene with Replay 6 Source:Island I had an interesting conversation with one of Melbourne’s senior musicians – Esric Jackson. We touched on his early days in the Sri Lankan scene, with the group Pioneers, etc., and his rise to stardom, in Melbourne, Australia, with his late wife, Sandra, and hissolo projects.I know for sure readers would love to know more about Esric and, with that in mind, I got the man-about-town, in Melbourne, Trevine Rodrigo, to do the needful. And, this is his story about Esric Jackson… Strength, resilience and a God given talent is what personifies Esric Jackson, one of Sri Lanka’s outstanding vocal talent. And there’s no sign of his love for entertainment waning – not in the near future, anyway. His sojourn into music began at a tender age in Anuradhapura, Sri Lanka.Trying to help a stranded Colombo band ...

“SPORTS MADNESS” – by Des Kelly If ‘Sports Madness’ is prevalent anywhere, the Capital of this World of insanity would be right here, in this huge brown Continent of Australia.  NEVER DOES A DAY GO BY, without some sport, either on land, or in water, being carried out. (There would be more swimming pools here, in Australia than anywhere else in the World), and I am quite certain of this. The reason for this brief, but important article of mine, is simply to ‘touch’ on the ‘Madness’ I write about when it comes to Sports in general. A Sport like Swimming is safe enough, I would suppose. Even ‘water-polo’ is hazard-proof, as the ball tossed around, would have to be less ‘felt’, having its impetus lessened by the water it emanates from. It feels very good to say that ‘swimming’ as a whole, is a safe, necessary Sport. Teaching children ...
