Climate Change: cooperate or perish-by PRAMOD DE SILVA Source:Sundayobserver Climate Change is very much in the news these days, with the COP 27 (Conference of Parties) Climate Change Conference being in Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt until November 18. Even as the negotiations get under way in this famous Egyptian City, severe flooding and other freak weather events have been reported from many parts of the world, drawing attention to the urgent need to address Climate Change. Although there are one or two COP meetings every year, the world needs to see concrete action, not just talk, to ward off the extreme effects of Climate Change. This is exactly what the United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres said at the conference in somewhat harsh terms: “Humanity has a choice: cooperate or perish. It is either a Climate Solidarity Pact – or a Collective Suicide Pact.” The proposed Pact would see all countries ...

Prehistoric dolmen in Padavigampola-BY MAHIL WIJESINGHE The dolmen at Padavigampola and Ven. Alapitiye Pannasara Thera Source:Sundayobserver A hamlet in the heart of rural Rambukkana, surrounded by paddy fields and huts, flanked by low hills and rivulets, little known to the outside world, and taken for granted by the locals – Padavigampola, at first glance, may seem like an ordinary hamlet, displaying no visible sign of being an important centre on the historical and cultural map of Sri Lanka. I felt it was worth making a trip to this unusual and obscure place. As we neared Padavigampola, close to the Padavigampola School which can be reached by travelling about 1.5 kms from Dehen Pauwa junction, itself four kms on the Rambukkana-Walgama road, I realised that it was not really a road less known or travelled. Padavigampola is famous for its ancient tomb-like rock structure or dolmen, belonging to the Stone Age. ...

P-627: Sri Lanka Navy’s Floating Fortress-By Dishan Joseph Source:Dailynews The oceans and seas still play a vital role in the prosperity and protection of the world’s population. A coastal Navy is focused on protecting a country’s territorial waters and adjacent international waters. The maritime domain is generally subdivided into two primary categories: littoral (coastal) and open ocean (blue-water). The littorals are defined by relatively shallow waters and close proximity to the coasts. Open-ocean operations are marked by waters beyond the maritime boundaries of nations. Maritime patrolling is essential in peacetime due to piracy, terrorism, smuggling, protection of fishing areas, securing the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) and sea lines of communication. Sea control allows a Navy to use the sea area for their national security objectives and denies access to a potential adversary. Navy Commander, Vice Admiral  Nishantha Ulugetenne Captain Lanka Dissanayake   For years Naval vessels relied primarily on organic ...
