DESMOND KELLY

“TWO-GUN TRUMP” by Des Kelly  The “saying” has been “said” so many times now, I feel that I am repeating myself when I say it again, for all my eLanka readers, out there, for all Sri Lankans  “living” all around this Planet, at the moment. Thank your lucky stars and let us all say it, ONE MORE TIME.!. “Enough is Enough”      My view on this 2nd Amendment, as they call it, in America, has been etched in stone, never to be erased, no matter what.!  Their “Gun-Lobby”, has been growing stronger with every passing day. Most people in the U.S.A. feel “safer” with this weapon “stored” & locked away, for self-protection. This is clearly understandable. If I was an American Citizen, I would feel the same way. As I see it, if I had to protect my wife and/or family, & if someone, anyone, tried to break into ...

“From Barnaby to Back-Benches” by Des Kelly Barnaby Joyce, 17th Deputy Prime Minister of Australia, will be stepping down from the 2nd most important job in Oz., on Monday 26th February, 2018, and will be joining a Former Prime Minister in Tony Abbott,on the back-benches of Parliament House. Two good friends who will probably sit there together (I hope), & reminisce about past good times, talking & laughing about everything other than politics. Nothing new about this, but “politics” is a dirty back-biting game. I wouldn’t be a politician for quids, but then, I don’t think they would accept me in Canberra, for two reasons. Reason one, was a “comment” that I should stick to writing about music, because I know nothing about politics, (what’s new)? and reason two is because I now cannot even step outside my Unit due to a spinal problem, so how could I go all the ...

“TRIPLE TALENT” by Des Kelly  Two words, not often associated with their true meaning. A “talent”, IS, however, often associated with “a legacy” left by parents to their children, in my own case, my dear Mum,  God rest her soul, was a prize-winning “vocalist” during her School years, in Ceylon (of course). Through my “writings” for H.M.S.eLanka (Her Majesty’s Ship),our Captain, Neil Jayasekera, & lowly Vice Captain,(myself), have decided to, firstly, delete the word “Vice”(I am too old for any of that), & substitute the prefix “Co”, making me therefore a bloody “Co-Captain”. Where was I going with this ?, what the ! ?. Oh, yes, it was “talent” we were talking about. “okay, Sir”!       Secondly, whenever & wherever possible, my “stories” for eLanka will feature “You-Tube” clips, as an added “entertainment”, if you like, for “on-line” members of our good Ship eLanka. If you are not a member, ...

“EVANGELIST EXTRAORDINAIRE” by Des Kelly He was very close to a century, in age, but has just “passed-on” to carry on his great work, with his Creator, Jesus Christ. Billy Graham, as I remember him, was a superb “orator”, spreading the “Word” of Our Lord, all over the World, to huge audiences who would sit there transfixed hanging onto every word, looking at this man who was an Evangelist Extraordinaire in every sense of the word.            I did have the pleasure of listening to him, even though, unfortunately, I never did get the chance of seeing him, in person, but the absolute “power”of his voice will never be erased from my memory. Today, I feel certain that millions of people from all around the World will remember him as someone who touched their hearts, as few others could.           On behalf of all ...

“Parliamentary-positions” by Des Kelly   “Rejoice, Barnaby. Above  “position” was not your’s alone, when living in a glass-house, one must not throw a stone” “It’s easy to criticise, but then, don’t shiver, each time you look, into a mirror” (famous quote-to be, by Desmond Kelly). Anything can happen now, and probably will. I have been advised, on may occasions, not to involve myself in “Politics”. I would love to do just this, but the “urge” is too strong. In Australia, right now, pride of place, on television, must go to “Parliamentary question time”. The days of good old British Comedy are long gone, but why worry ?. We now have “P.Q.T”., the BEST Comedy of Errors ever imagined. Instead of “running” the Country, Parliamentary Colleagues are “running” after each other, knives in hand, to stab each other in the back, because they seem to have nothing better to do. The boats ...

“FAMILY-TRAITS” By Des Kelly Introducing, with pride, Andrea Barton, second daughter of a first cousin of this writer, Audrey Smyth, third daughter of my Aunt Ouida, who was, strangely, the second “sister” of the Kriekenbeek family in Ceylon, Aunt Iris, being the eldest, and my own dear mum, Lyn, being the youngest. May all of them who have “passed-on”, rest in peace.      Audrey Smyth (nee Demmer),married David, who, I believe, was an Engineer, now retired, but still heavily involved in the issue of “Domestic-Violence” eradication, for which I heartily applaud him.       Why do I go through all these details ?, & will the readers of eLanka be even INTERESTED in all this ?, well, folks, the “title” of this article is in the short, but proud answer. I go through these details because I am very proud of the fact that, without “bludging”, going “on the ...

“HAWKE, BY NAME, HAWK, BY NATURE” by Des Kelly Another fine documentary on the A.B.C. very recently about this Aussie guy by the name of Robert James Lee Hawke A.C., G.C.L., who just happened to be the 23rd Prime Minister of Australia who “served” from 1983-1991. He held office as the leader of the “Labor Party”, according to Wikipedia. According to “this writer” , Bob Hawke held office as the leader of the “Labour Party, simply because we are “Australian” & not “American” & we “speak” English & not American. This is, of course, with due respect to Wikipedia, because I suppose the originator of the “word”, in the first place, got it wrong. The correct “English” spelling IS Labour. When we speak English we should “honour, not honor”the Queen’s language, your Honour. The Labour Party, as the name suggests, is supposed to be the “Party” that “works” for the ...

“SMILE” by Des Kelly Gone, but not forgotten. Judy Garland, mother of Liza Minelli (a “Star” that the younger folk will remember more of, I suppose), still, I remember Judy, who now rests in peace, after what was a most turbulent life. Judy was an “artiste” who strived for perfection in everything she did. She was an actress, remembered for her roles with other “huge Hollywood Stars” such as Chaplin. Charles was also “the “Comedian” of his era, although many folk are not aware that he was a brilliant musician as well. I have chosen this “clip” of Judy Garland singing “Smile” as my personal choice, because it was associated with Charles Chaplins “Modern times” & also because this was in the era of 1936, the year this writer was born. Please enjoy the song folks, then sit back and SMILE at the wonderful photographs that should certainly make you ...

“THE LADIES OF SRI LANKA” by Des Kelly A very well-known Spanish-style song of bygone days, made famous by people such as actor Peter Sellers in dedication to the beautiful, sexy Sophia Loren, played to perfection by the Lawrence Welk Orchestra, on guitar, by Al Ciaola, sung, much later by a bloke by the name of Kal Khan, otherwise, also well-known by the name of  Bill Forbes, a guy, now living in England who, I was privileged to know as a personal friend, in Ceylon, from where, both of us reluctantly left, Bill, to migrate to Britain, & “your’s truly” to Australia.        Bill did his Motherland proud, in England, recording many “hits” for “Columbia-Records”, making us all very proud, in Ceylon, at the time, to hear him singing in that powerful voice of his, featured regularly on The Commercial Service of Radio Ceylon”. I am sure that ...

“ZERO IN ON ZIEHRER” by Des Kelly This is what this remarkable pianist said. “With all my heart I dedicated these self-arranged waltzes to one of the greatest and most gifted 19th Century Composers . Ziehrer loved Vienna, he lived Vienna. His blood was Viennese, and so is mine. Whenever one is caught by the waltz (as I am), Ziehrer is the remedy. The name of this young pianist? WALDTEUFEL This was a personal dedication to a Composer who, although not known as well as some of the icons of this type of music (Johann Strauss for example), wrote some beautiful music, and being a Viennese, from a City that is synonymous with love, obviously had the natural God-given talent to show the World what good music is all about. The fact that this writer loves “Country Music” does not mean that I have no time for any other. This piano ...
