DESMOND KELLY

OBITUARY – ELVIS ‘RICKY’ THURGOOD A very sad exit of Ricky Thurgood dearly beloved son of Doris and Noel Thurgood of Caulfield, Victoria, who loved Elvis so much, he was always referred to as Elvis, which he, in turn,  responded to, with a smile. While sending my sincere condolences to his entire family, I must add that Ricky’s parents, to their credit, gave up nearly everything in life, to look after this son, after his tragic accident, and I was privileged to know them both, personally. I will now pass on to the obituary notice I have just read, with genuine sadness, so rest in peace now Elvis Ricky Thurgood, and may God bless you and keep you in His care, forever. Desmond Kelly. “A LONG INTRO., YET AMAZING” Aliya, the Sinhalese word for Elephant. Large, loving, Animals, if Looked after, I recommend this very Interesting post. You are advised to read it, to the end.           “THE COLOMBO OF OLDE” – by Des Kelly      No, it’s not a spelling mistake folks, although unfortunately, I am guilty of the same at times, myself. This spelling comes from ancient  Shakespearean literature and I do prefer this old word with the e’ added. That said, let me thank both Arthur Speldewinde and Charles Schokman for this “post” that will bring precious memories to many folk from our Lovely Island Home. I think that this is one that was published a year or two ago, but that really doesn’t matter.  ...

“BOUKE-JANE” – By Des Kelly     This is quite definitely not old Tarzan’s Jane that Bouke (a handsome young Dutchman), is warbling to, with lovelight in his eyes, as shown on the cover of the very first classic musical “recording” of a love song that I have ever seen, with such an amazing dearth of information as to the details of this work, I was wondering what in blazes, this recording was all about. I watched this “surprise” come up suddenly on you-tube, and was about to scroll past it, as it simply introduced itself as Bouke-Jane (Candytje01-821K views-Published on Sep 17,,2013), but suddenly something made me want to watch it, an I am very glad I did do just that, cause, coming from Maternal Dutch stock myself, my Mum, a Miss Kriekenbeek, before she married my Dad, Carlo Kelly was, in ...

“ROYALTY PERSONIFIED” – by Des Kelly      Everyone, to some extent, is aware of the British Royal Family, but not too many people are aware about Princess Alice, the mother of the late Prince Phillip, Consort of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth the 2nd.           This extremely interesting story was sent in by my friend Charles Schokman, and it is indeed an amazing account on the life of an equally amazing Royal Princess, tinged with sadness at times, unexpected, for one of her rank. ...

SUPER CONTAINER SHIPS – By Des Kelly  The “Title” is certainly superb, as far as I am concerned. Thank you, Chris.Lawton, for sending in this “post” regarding these magnificent vessels, always referred to, in the female gender. I still remember the superb little Minesweeper “Vijaya”, presented to The Royal Ceylon Navy, formerly called “Flying Fish” by the British Royal Navy, a Ship, although quite small, was ideally suited for it’s purpose of seeking out mines, covertly placed in Sea-lanes to blow up enemy shipping that were caught unaware. I also remember that although Vijaya, was the one and ONLY SHIP, the R.Cy,N.of my era, boasted, She was rather uncomfortable for the Crew to travel in, was fondly referred to, as a CORK, that could take any Sea, and would not SINK unless of course, the inevitable happened and She was blown up by a bloody mine. ...

“LOCKDOWN LARRIKINS” – By Des Kelly   Tired of hearing the word ??, I don’t blame you. However, in Australia, our Medical facilities are 2nd to none, and if anyone who has taken a hatred to staying home, and staying safe, all they have to do is to ignore lockdown instructions, go out, mix around, only wearing masks if planning to rob a bank, and eventually catch the Covid bug, floating around it seems, everywhere, and, as sure as night is followed by day, end up in some hospital, which means that they would then have the expert services of one or more of these individuals that Desmond de Silva is messaging us, about. Thank you, Dssmond. I am sure that our e’Lanka readers will really enjoy this one. Desmond Kelly. (Editor-in-Chief) e’Lanka. ...

“AUSTRALIA-BY RAIL” – by Des Kelly Although I tend to reminisce at times, on the wonderful twenty six years I spent in Ceylon, migrating to Melbourne was possibly the best thing I ever did, for the sake of my young family. That said, the “train-ride” I enjoyed most, in my lovely Island Home was when Fred de Kretser, an uncle of mine, God bless his soul, told my mum that he would take me on a trip to New-Railya (Nuwara Eliya) aboard his Railway Engine, (he was an Engine-driver for the C.G.R.), at the time, and what boy of around ten would not jump at the chance of this nature ?. For the first time in my life, I was able to watch the scenic beauty of Ceylon, as we chugged past, on the old red rattler, for the few hours it took to ...

“THE GREAT ALEXANDER MOB” – by Des Kelly   Once again, something quite different from Maxwell Gerreyn, our Western Australian connection as far as e’Lanka is concerned. He has introduced this post himself, plus the video that certainly is one of the most interesting ones I have seen, in a long time. The “wordplay” on the title is mine, and I’ll let you work it out.    Desmond Kelly (Editor-in-Chief) e’Lanka  Found the Secret!   This is the incredible story of the Hunza Tribe who live in northern India at the foothills of the Himalayas, at the border of Pakistan, Afghanistan, and the former Soviet Union, and China.    Numbering only 30,000 and believed to be the missing army of Alexander the Great when he invaded India, these white skinned people stand out from their neighbours for many reasons. ...
