“THE RIGHT TO DREAM” – By Des Kelly One of my earlier original compositions, lyrics & music, that unfortunately, has still not been recorded. My lyrics, here for your perusal, my “music” still available, through eLanka, for a male vocalist (of my choice), who can sing “Country” The tune is simple, but commercial, just like the two “hits” I have chosen for my readers. Now & again, our Aussie mates (pronounced mites), hear these rather sad stories in the local pub, then come out, rather late each morning to retell them to their mites at smoko, (oh, I hope I spelt that right). Anyway here goes. Top 25 Wild Bird Photographs of the Week – FEATHERS Congratulations from eLanka to each & every photographer who sent us these very beautiful birds (of the feathered variety). Not very much, need be said about these glorious pictures. Yet another feat of the “Almighty” in Heaven, creatures whose feathers could only be featured by HIM, in all their splendour. This is what makes me suggest that the word ” Feather-duster” be eliminated from the English Language. Dust will never kill you. “THE EXECUTIONER’S SONG” – By Des Kelly Another story, for what it is worth, comes to us from the “Washington Post”, in America, stating that Sri Lanka, who has carried the “Death Penalty” Sentence on it’s Legal System for many years now, without actually “carrying” it out, is presently looking for some young, fit, guy to join the Government to help them start hanging Criminals by the neck, until they are dead. I believe, on very good authority, that there are many of these “dead men walking”, in “Death Row” right now. These people have now been in the situation where it is possible that they think, that their death sentence could be reduced to a life behind bars, and rightfully so, but the latest sad truth of the matter is that, very soon, some young guy will be up there on the scaffold with them, rope noose in hand, ...

“A.I.S.I”. (AS I’VE SEEN IT) – By Des Kelly We are already halfway through February, 2019, a very important month for this writer, and the Country I came from. Firstly, I have always preferred the rather beautiful name of CEYLON simply because that was her name, when we left her shores for the last time. I am now talking about the mass-exodus of the Burgher Communities that obviously had to leave because of the Sinhala-only policy which would have made it nearly impossible for our children to pass their examinations and secure good jobs. The exodus began in the 1950s & I migrated to Melbourne in 1962, very early in the 60s, after serving my Country in the Royal Ceylon Navy for the best part of the 50s. “MORATUWA MAGIC” – By Des Kelly The tiny little Suburb I was very much part of during what is known as “the formative years”, Moratuwa, which now boasts the Holy Emmanuel Church, mentioned in this story, then boasted my first College, St.Sebastian’s, standing practically next to the Church of the same name. Moratuwa was then, is now, and always will be, a Town dedicated to the Roman Catholic Religion. An example of “Moratuwa-Magic” would have to be the “decorative” Corpus Christie annual march from the little Convent of Our Lady of Victories, all the way to St.Sebastian’s Church, along the main Street, decorated with flora and palm fronds, & coloured sawdust, underfoot. The “Stations of the Cross” were at various spots along the highway, ending in s special “Service” at the Church, where St.Sebastian, proudly sat aboard his Steed, outside the Church, dressed as a warrior, drawn sword in hand. ...

“STORIES IN SONG” SERIES 2019 – “WAITING FOR THE WORLD TO END” – By Des Kelly No, this is certainly not a doomsday prediction on my part. I am not waiting for it to happen. Too much to do, for instance, writing for all our Lankan/Aussies on eLanka. This interesting article (hopefully), is to prove to everyone out there, especially Musicians, Songwriters, and the like, how they could take a simple song of just two chords, simple lyrics, a simple Country/Rock beat, and turn it into a danceable, enjoyable, unforgettable “event” anywhere in the World. The band, in this case, are “The Mavericks”, a bunch of guys (about 5 regulars & 3 or 4 “session Musos”, including some fabulous “brass”), who, in my opinion, would have to be some of the best “entertainers” in the business. “MAD-RUSH TO NAB MADUSH” – By Des Kelly Breaking news from Sri Lanka. Makandure Madush, also known as “Angoda Lokka” (figures), as he is also supposed to be the mad “lokka” of a drug cartel in Dubai, enjoying parties and the high life there, but not sending any money to the much saner “pissuwas” in Angoda to help them have a few “highs” as well. Then, what happens ?, Makandure & some of his party-going cronies including Amal Perera, a singer of sorts and Ryan Van Rooyen, a Dutch Burgher actor of sorts, started celebrating someone’s birthday in some posh joint in Dubai, obviously, not just enjoying birthday cake & soft drinks, when the police over there raided the joint. “Stories in Song” Series 2019. “THE BAKER COMBO” – By Des Kelly Yes, folks, memories are certainly made of this, or these, as the case may be. “The George Baker Selection” certainly made their “selection” of memorable songs, that I believe, are “aired” on “Gold F.M.” in Sri Lanka right now. Incidentally, I would now like to take the chance to thank this medium for playing some of my own songs also, 57 years after I left “My Lovely Island Home”, as I call her. Once again, memories, as far as I am concerned. The George Baker Selection were very popular with thousands of Sri Lankan Radio listeners of their era, & I was certainly one of them.
