“THE BAILA-BEAT” -by Des Kelly Sent in by our good friend Charles Schokman, here is the BEST exposure of the Baila-beat with a difference. Cannot possibly identify the dancers, but I am almost certain that the music comes from The Gypsies, as the front-man sounds very much like the late, great Sunil, leader of the famous band from Moratuwa. Possibly, e’Lanka has publicised this before, but this is well worth a repeat anyway, so here goes. Desmond Kelly. (Editor-in-Chief) e’ Lanka. ...

“LOVING HEIDI HAUGE” – by Des Kelly She’s the Scandinavian Queen of Country Music, and at the moment, quite the rage, is Heidi Hauge. A recording “Star”, with dozens of Country Songs to her credit, even though her Scandinavian accent is a bit hard to get used to. I have already featured this good-looking songstress often, but now, another Country Music friend of ours, Charles Schokman has come up with what I am proud to feature on e’ Lanka, Australia’s BEST website for Lankans everywhere, a more recent recording of Heidi, for your enjoyment. Charles’ post to me is fully appreciated. Heidi’s appreciation of the way she is loved each night, is seconded by both Charles Schokman & your’s truly. It would not be difficult to love Heidi Hague each night either, after hearing her sing all these wonderful songs. Desmond Kelly. (Editor-in-Chief) e’ Lanka. “The Way You Love Me ...

“THE SOUND OF SILENCE” The truly adequate title of a recording “hit” of it’s era, by Simon & Garfunkel, and the story behind the song, sent in to us at e’Lanka, so a very big “Thank you” to Charles Schokman from all our readers who fully understand the value of any interesting story/stories such as these. Desmond Kelly. (Editor-in-Chief) e’Lanka. A Grim Reminder & The Sound Of Silence A humane act  of Today I read a very beautiful story, which I decided to share. It is the story of a poor boy, an American of a Jewish family, from Buffalo, who wins a scholarship at Columbia University. There, he befriends a boy who turned out to be a great friend, and his roommate. But in his freshman year of college, watching a baseball game, all of a sudden, out of nowhere, he went blind.  The doctor said it was conjunctivitis ...

“AMERICA ON AUSTRALIA” – by Des Kelly   Occasionally, English Authors, Writers or Poets come up with various quotes that are lessons of life in themselves. This was one of them. “If the grass is greener on the other side, why are you still here” ??. Even though I did migrate to Australia sixty years ago, I still felt that possibly America should have been the place for me, especially because of my love for American-style Country music, and the fact that I could compose songs that would have suited some of the Country Icons to a tee, and what’s more, write them in a matter of hours, rather than days or weeks, in fact, as many of my friends pointed out, I could have made a fortune in America, simply writing songs, but the fact remains that I came to Australia, worked my butt off, doing various other jobs ...

Bringing the Christmas Cheer on this Christmas day – sent by Charles Schokman Lets you did not know? Many  years  before  the  birth  of  Jesus  Christ,   the  25th.  of  December  was  the  Pagan,s  day  for  sacrifices to their  gods  and  celebrations . Later  on, in  the  year 533 AD ,  the  newly  converted  Christian  Emperor  Constantine  of  Rome  and  head  of  the  Roman  Church  ( today  the  Roman  Catholic Church )  changed  it  to  be  the day  to  commemorate  the  birth  of  Jesus  Christ.  He  called  the  day “ The  Mass  for  Christ “   ie.  CHRISTMAS. CHRIST  in  Hebrew  means  “ The  Anointed  One “  or  “ The  Chosen  One “. Thus  CHRISTMAS  means  “ The  Gathering  of  People  of  Christ “  –  His  Disciples  and  Followers . After  it  was  universally  accepted  and  revered  as  the  day  to  commemorate  the  birth  of  the  Messiah  of the  World, Jesus Christ,  ...

Songs by Desmond Kelly from Charles Schokman Today, (Tuesday 30th November) I took advantage of the last day of spring and spent most of my time in the garden, a place I love to be. It was a beautiful morning and I enjoyed the peace and tranquility it provided. Gardening is my hobby and at the age of 92 I could not find a better way to be out enjoying the beauty of nature amidst the fresh air, the wavering of the tree branches, the fragrance of flowers and the chirping of the birds. As the clock kept ticking the temperature gradually increased and once it reached 30 degrees I realised the need to relax indoors. Whilst in a vacant and pensive mood, feeling half asleep the phone rang and to my delight it was from my good friend Desmond Kelly, affectionately known as Des. Over a brief conversation he ...

KOREAN NEWS ABOUT INDIA – By Des Kelly           Yet another extremely interesting video comes to e’Lanka from Charles Schokman, this one narrated superbly by this Korean Broadcaster, on INDIA. As I always say, “we live and learn” and never has it been so apt, as it is, right now. Firstly, she mentions her name briefly, just as the video closes, but, in my opinion, this young Korean woman would be very difficult to replace as a Broadcaster in any Radio Station in the World. Clear and precise, not an “umm” or an “ah” ejaculate to spoil the narration, this young lady tells us all about “Mother India”, fascinating facts that most of us would not have otherwise known.            Now that we DO KNOW so much about India, the “Power to be”, I do look forward to yet another video, this ...

This was sent to me, by Charles Schokman, and I thank him for it, on behalf of e’Lanka, all of whose members are hopefully animal-lovers, and would certainly love to watch this superb bit of work carried out by the Sri Lankan Navy, of whom I have  always been proud.  How this incident came about, I haven’t a clue, but this just goes to show what a bit of “caring” can do. Please watch this video folks, and be uplifted.            Desmond Kelly.  (Editor-in-Chief) e’Lanka.     ...

“WE, BURGHERS” – By Des Kelly   Many, are the stories on the tiny, yet very important element of population of Ceylon (then), Sri Lanka (now), Burgher Buggers, as we are fondly (?)!! referred to, even after about 90% of us, have already migrated to many parts of the Globe.             Once again, thank you to Charles Schokman, and hooray !!, the honorary Author of this most entertaining and interesting “post”is a Ceylonese Politician I remember well, as the very first Communist leader of my era in the “Pearl of the Indian Ocean”. Peiter Keuneman passed on, in Lanka, in 1997, and regardless of which Political Party he was involved in, will always be remembered by his family and friends, as a highly educated, brilliant Politician, who served , in his Country.. ...

“FRIENDS FOREVER” – by Des Kelly A most beautiful story, proving that animals are akin to humans, in so many ways. If a friendship happens between them, it doesn’t really matter how different their individual lifestyles are, the bond that is thereby created between them has to be seen, to be believed. Thank you, Charles Schokman, for this wonderful video which will possibly bring tears to the eyes of animal-lovers around the World, via e’Lanka, in addition, of course. Folks, please read, watch, and enjoy these “Friends Forever”.           Desmond Kelly. (Editor-in-Chief) e’Lanka FRIENDSHIP After losing his parents, this 3 year old orangutan was so depressed he wouldn’t eat and didn’t respond to any medical treatments. The veterinarians thought he would surely die from sadness. The zoo keepers found an old sick dog on the grounds in ...
