The first billionaire in the world. By age 25, he controlled one of the largest oil refineries in the US. By age 31, he had become the world’s largest oil refiner. By age 38, he commanded 90% of the oil refined in the U.S. By 50, he was the richest man in the country.  As a young man, every decision, attitude, and relationship was tailored to create his personal power and wealth.  But at the age of 53, he became ill. SUNDAY CHOICE – Keep me travelling along with you – by Charles Schokman This is a children’s song about new beginnings. It was written by English historian, folk-singer and song-writer Sydney Bertram Carter (1915-2004) – author of Lord of the Dance. It was first published in 1971 by Stainer and Bell Ltd. The lyrics of this journeying hymn by Daniel Shiells with its bouncy tune are often sung with passion and meaning in rousing school assemblies. Keep me travelling along with you.  “As I travel through the bad and good, Keep me travelling the way I should; Where I see no way to go You’ll be telling me the way, I know.” When Jesus refers to himself as the way, the truth, and the life, he is giving us a better way to live our lives through him. He is showing us that through following him daily in faith, he will lead us ...

GROWING OLD GRACEFULLY  – Remember your ageing friends and relatives – by Charles Schokman I’m still here     My looks are nothing special, My face reveals my age, My body shows some wear and tear, And my energy’s not the same.   Too often my memory fails me, And I lose things all the time. One minute I know what I plan to do, And the next it may just slip my mind.   I try hard to avoid my mirror. There are things I would rather not see, And even those times when I just catch a glimpse, I can no longer recognize me.     The things I used to do with ease Can now cause aches and pains, And the quality of the things I do Will never be quite the same. I always compare my older self To those younger versions of me, And I know I’m wasting ...

SUNDAY CHOICE – LOVE HAS NO LIMITS – by Charles Schokman “Love knows no limit to its endurance, no end to its trust, no fading of its hope; it can outlast anything. It is, in fact, the one thing that still stands when all else has fallen.”  (1 Corinthians 13:7-8)     A BEAUTIFUL EXAMPLE. There are many wonderful gifts I’ve received in my lifetime.  The perfect hand-sewn dress from my mother. Fingerprint painted pots from my kids. Handwritten cards from my husband. But, for so many reasons, this gift is among the most priceless I’ve ever received. Claver, my husband carved an original woodblock design, then printed it in his college printmaking class, and gave it to me for Mother’s Day last year. The artwork was exquisite, and the hours he put into it meant so much to me.  But, the even greater value was the message behind the words. ...

SONGS OF PRAISE – Jesus Loves Me – By Charles Schokman “Jesus loves me – this I know, For the Bible tells me so: If you have been a Christian for very long, then you have probably heard the famous children’s song, “Jesus Loves Me.” It is played in most churches and Christian homes across the world. Have you ever wondered about its origin or the author’s story?  Two sisters, Anna and Susan Warner, became writers after their father passed away. They were left with very little and needed the means to survive. Both women became quite the writers, with Susan publishing several well-known novels and Anna publishing collections of hymns. They lived together on the Hudson River in New York. Their house was next to a military academy for young boys, so they soon began to teach the Bible at the Academy. They spent many years teaching the boys ...

LEST! YOU DID NOT KNOW? – By Charles Schokman Have you ever wondered where the month of August got its name from? August, the eighth month of our calendar year, was named in honor of the Roman emperor, Augustus Caesar. The original Roman calendar, which consisted of ten months, began with March and ended with December. However, during the reign of Julius Caesar, changes were made to the Roman calendar in order to align it with the solar year. These changes included the introduction of two new months, July and August. After Julius Caesar’s assassination in 44 BC, his adopted son and heir, Gaius Octavius, came to power. Octavius later changed his name to Augustus Caesar, officially becoming the first Roman emperor. To commemorate his numerous accomplishments and to maintain harmony with the naming of the previous month (July, named after Julius Caesar), Augustus Caesar requested that the month then known ...

SUNDAY CHOICE – Kris Kristofferson Why Me Lord Story Told – By Charles Schokman “Why Me” was recorded by Kristofferson in 1972, featuring backing vocals by soon-to-be wife Rita Coolidge and up-and-coming singer-songwriter Larry Gatlin. It was released on the album Jesus Was a Capricorn in 1973, and became the biggest hit of his career.   According to country music historian Bill Malone, Kristofferson wrote the song during an emotionally low period of his life after having attended a religious service conducted by the Rev. Jimmie Rogers Snow. Malone wrote, “‘Why Me, Lord'” – as the song is sometimes known – “may seem greatly out of character for Kristofferson, but it can be interpreted as his own personal religious rephrasing of ‘Sunday Morning Coming Down.’ In this case, he is ‘coming down’ not from drugs, but from the whole hedonistic euphoria of the (1960s).” Malone described Kristofferson’s gruff vocal styling ...

SUNDAY CHOICE – Your grace is sufficient for me – by Charles Schokman “But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me.—-2 Corinthians 12:9(ESV) Verse Thoughts Paul was doing a great work for the Lord, but God knows the heart of all men and He knew that Paul could become puffed up with pride due to the great revelations that God was giving to the Church through him. The mysteries that Paul was being shown, had been kept hidden for ages and generations but now were being revealed to the saints of God – through Paul. No wonder the Lord gave Paul a thorn in the flesh, which caused him to be tried and tested, beaten and buffeted to the extreme ...

SONGS OF PRAISE – GREAT IS THY FAITHFULNESS – by Charles Schokman “The steadfast love of the LORD never ceases; his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness” Lamentations 3:22-23 (ESV).  In a Kentucky log cabin Thomas O. Chisholm was born in 1866. Even though he was not offered a formal education, Thomas succeeded academically. He also made some poetical contributions of his own to other local newspapers. At the age of 26, Thomas made one of the most important decisions that he would make in his life when he accepted Christ as his Lord and Savior in 1893. In 1903, he ...
