CHRISTIANITY ON T.V. by Des Kelly ‘the Star of eLanka” Easter tidings are almost upon us. Another long-weekend “holiday” in Australia, our “adopted” Country, is just about due. Recently, also, I have been very critical about the “content” offered to “free-t.v. viewers, myself included, BUT, most of the “articles” I write nowadays are actually based on television programmes that have “caught my attention”, written of course, especially for Lankan/Australians, here & there, and everywhere, as a matter of fact. Everyone who is “Internet-savvy” IS able to read, and hopefully COMMENT, “on-line”, (e’Lanka) is my choice, as the obvious & best website available, right at the moment, but, for “older Lankans” & others who know of no other “nets” but the mosquito, fishing, or hair-net ones, our Melbourne-based Sri Lankan Newspaper, the Lanka Times, is always available if anyone wishes to look for it. One way, or the other, Lankan/Aussies, will ...

“HAPPY DAYS ARE HERE AGAIN” by Des Kelly “the Star of eLanka” Another great old song, sung with gusto in the halcyon days of the 1950’s as I remember them, “the skies above are clear again”, yes, clear, they were, especially in the Ceylon I knew, even though we were certainly not affluent and could only afford about two and a half rupees for a good ” thosai” feed washed down with a” kiri-kopi”as only the odd Thumby could produce, at a “famous” thosai-joint” in Bambalapitiya, then have a “smoke” of a rather expensive cigarette with the name “Capstan Navy-Cut”, or, perhaps, even a ” Black & White” or “Abdullah”(a flat cigarette, perhaps because the “Tins” were flattened at the Colombo Harbour), “pinched” by my good friend & Peterite David Swan(God rest his soul, IF, he has passed-away, as I am given to understand), from his Pater, who was a ...

DOCTOR KILL OR CURE (Revisited) – by  Desmond Kelly  “Star of eLanka”     Seriously speaking, We Lankans, especially, seem to get a lot of headaches for one reason or the other. If we are married, heterosexually, our “partners” are generally to blame. Homosexually, I haven’t a clue because I have never been married in that fashion but. As I have said, and “written” before, I live in a Suburb called Hampton Park in Melbourne, Victoria.. Just a few kilometres away, there lies another little Suburb named Noble Park & here reside a very good percentage of Lankan/Aussies. If,  for any reason whatsoever, I was to use my catapult and fire a stone into the nobility of THAT PARK, it would land on the head of a Sri Lankan & that Sri Lankan would have Diabetes. The main reason for this is simply because Lankans LOVE chocolate. I do, too, and am supposed ...

STRIFE OF THE SRI LANKAN HOUSEWIFE How many times have we heard “stories” like this? !! “My biscuits were too hard Not like HIS Mother used to make He did’nt like my curries Or even the love-cake The coffee was’nt brewed right Nor was HIS herbal-tea The buriyani was “not nice” Nor was the mulligatawny Shirt-buttons “missed” the button-hole Tie knotted on askew I did’nt mend his socks Just like HIS Mother used to do” I stood there, quite dumbfounded While HE kept finding fault “The eggs are NOT boiled right Where IS the pepper & the salt”? “I think I’m getting tired” I said “I’m going to take a nap Can’t blame your Mum for giving you A thundering bloody slap You’re just a great big grumble-bum Who knows sweet bugger-all And you can go and get your sleep On the couch, out in the hall” I’ve heard this ...

“FICKLE LOVE-STORIES” As we go through life, there are many of them. I was of the “age” when “same-sex” marriages were not even heard of. For us, it was simply boy loves girl and vice-versa. Everything was wonderful. Yet, when I started to write my songs, I knew, from personal experience, that these “love-stories” could sometimes be fickle. So, this is why I wrote songs like :-                           “TEACH ME TO LOVE YOU”                        (Latin Bolero/Swing Tempo). Teach me to love you, teach me all I need know Show me the meaning of that sweet word “amor” Give me a lesson on what’s wrong and what’s right Teach me to love you, teach me tonight Come on, (“swing”) & teach me to kiss you teach me to squeeze you teach me to hold you close  then, someday, teacher  we’ll see a preacher might well be tomorrow who knows? (back to ...

QUANDARY? , QUANDA (18/7/16) QUONDO QUONDO!    Already, from what I did read read on ELanka, on Tuesday the 19th of July, 2016, our electronic medium is fairly “buzzing” with the “news” about Senator-elect Pauline Hanson, her “One-Nation” Political Party & her strong views on what should be “good” for Australia in the FUTURE. Pauline Hanson is certainly no “rookie” in the game of Politics. She has been “around” for a couple of decades at least, always has had the visible courage of her convictions and does not hesitate to “air” them whenever & wherever possible. Because of these “convictions” , no matter what we think, CREDIT is due to both Pauline & her “Political-Partner” Derryn Hinch for speaking their minds out, no matter what!!,  and I certainly admire them both for this. Social bloody Media tripled, is what is going to make a huge friggin difference to our lives ...

Most of the songs I have “written & composed” have been “love-songs”. This stems from the era in which they were written, the 50’s & 60’s. They were the years when “Love was in the air”. They were the songs that were written when, instead of violence, romance was paramount, in every sense of the word. Of course, love-stories did not always end with the “happily ever after” theme. Sometimes, as in my case, I ended up :-                    “BACK, WHERE I STARTED, AGAIN”. I’ve tried counting sheep, but I just can’t sleep I’m back, where I started, again As time passes by, like a faraway sigh The breeze seems to whisper your name My life had been lonely, until I met you Then, nothing else mattered, my dreams had come true Now you’ve said goodbye, & I was to blame So, I’m back, where I started, again. I want ...
