Des Kelly – R.I.P –  by Roger Thiedeman Dear Neil, I was very sorry to hear this morning of the passing of Des Kelly. I count it a privilege, and a very timely one, to have spent an hour or so with Des at his place of residence only a couple of months ago. Although it was obvious that his physical health and mobility were compromised to varying degrees, he was still mentally as sharp as the proverbial tack, and completely ‘on form’ as far as his memory and wit were concerned. I am attaching a few photos you may care to include in a tribute to Des in eLanka Newsletter. The pics were taken by me in December 1990, during the first visit to Australia by Sri Lankan music superstar, now mentor and ‘guru’, Keerthi Pasquel. He was joined on that tour by Mariazelle Goonetilleke, also making her first trip ...

Obviously, the music he had inherited, runs through in his blood. However. Mahesh initially was more interested in computer hardware to become an engineer in that preferred profession. But like a duck taking to water he was predestined to grow to be a musician. A very well known accomplished now, in fact a household name in music having made enormous contributions to the music industry in our country becoming a maestro as a fabulous keyboardist, composer, pianist and a superior in music arrangements, perhaps even superseding the achievements of Father Patrick Denipitiya. Initially Mahesh had commenced with a guitar as a birthday gift ...

Birthday boy Desmond does it in style source :-The Island I’m not a big fan of the baila. It’s not that I dislike this fun-type of music but there are artistes who tend to overdo it, in a mundane way, at their concerts, and that, invariably, leads to boredom. Obviously, taking all this into consideration, I was a bit apprehensive to check out “A Celebration with Desmond de Silva.” On the morning of the show, I was in two minds, but the home crowd insisted that I join them. Let me tell you that the legendary Desmond de Silva proved my thinking wrong…with a superlative performance that made me wish the three-hour concert could have gone on and on!. Of course, Desmond is a maestro and when it comes to showmanship and presentation, he is streets ahead of the rest. He galvanized the large crowd into immediate action with ...
