DESMOND KELLY

SATCHMO-SCORES – By Des Kelly The A.B.C. is the name, and today, Tennis is the game. Simona Halep, World Number 1 was soundly beaten by not only the “jazzy-sound” of Satchmo’s trumpet solo, but also by Kala Kanepi, (ranked 44th), in the World’s open U.S.Tennis tournament at Flushing Meadows in L.A. &, as a result, took a “flushing” example of a certain Aussie tennis player, and smashed her racquet several times on the hard surface of the court, to teach it a lesson.         If these people cannot “play the game” in the true sense of the word, they should not be playing at all. I fully understand that tennis racquet manufacturers have to make a living, as, also should all Bunnings stores sell many sheets of sandpaper, to scratch cricket balls with, but, what has this to do with Satchmo ?.        Well, I did ...

MY LOVELY ISLAND HOME – By Des Kelly   There are many “song-titles” resembling the above, but the true story regarding the music and lyrics to a most beautiful song, was heard by this writer, not long after I had migrated to Melbourne, with my young family, from Ceylon, in 1962. It would have been still the mid 60’s, and I really cannot recall exactly when or where I heard it. The “title” was completely different, and the song Dilhani-dhuvani was being sung by a female of Lankan origin, that I had not heard of, nevertheless, Indrani Perera sang this song so very well (it was on cassette, I think), I listened to it, many times over, and remember feeling extremely homesick for the Country we had just left for good, not because we wanted to, but because we had to. Homesickness, sadness, there’s not much difference, I can tell you.   ...

THE VIOLIN-MAKER by Des Kelly Being a guitar-player myself, I am aware of the fact that there are many other eLanka readers out there, who either play this instrument or, would love to learn to play guitar themselves. My advice to them is this. Try the Ukelele first. A much smaller instrument, it has only four strings & is much easier to “tune”. If you can sing, as well, it is easier still, to manage. However, if there is no music in you, you cannot sing in key, & your “timing” is up the creek, don’t even bother to try learning any musical instrument. You would be much better off playing marbles. This said, let me get down to a true story about a much more difficult instrument to play, or even listen to, unless the player is an expert at it. Because a violin has no “frets”akin to a ...

THE CATS ARE BACK – By Des Kelly   The Cats of Geelong are back in my favour. I do feel that they will feature in the footy finals of 2018 & perhaps even win the cup this year. In order to give them some incentive to do this, I would like to give them, and the readers of eLanka some facts about cats, on my “Cats are back” story which, hopefully will interest everyone in Melbourne, who follow this great team, even if they lose, sometimes. To all my “Cat followers” in Geelong & Victoria, in general, you are lucky indeed, not to have the blues as you barrack for these Cats. Even the President of the United States of America loves these pussies, so there!!. Cats are mentioned in Assyria 2.000 B.C., and are found in Egyptian tombs centuries prior to this date. Deified like the Ibis & ...

PIPINGER – by Des Kelly In the Ceylon of my youth, one of the first little poems, recited was, “What’s your name ?, sugar-cane,                             where do you live, ?, down the lane,                         what’s your number, ?, cucumber,                         what’s your age, ?, sausage.!, remember it, folks ?. How simple was our life, those days ?. When I first met a little Sinhalese girl, who used to accompany me to the Convent of Our Lady Of Victories, in “Moratu-mulla”(the corner of Moratuwa), I asked her, her name, and she said”Suranganee” Even with the fantastic memory I still possess, I cannot remember her Surname. We were both around the ripe old age of 5. She was ...

Palmistry by Des Kelly With the current state of Politics in Australia, I have decided not to get a manager, but take things into my own hands and share my knowledge of the above, especially with all the readers of eLanka, everywhere. Nobody is any the wiser about WHO is going to be the 30th Prime Minister of Australia, so what better than going to see a “Palmist” or “Fortune-teller” , as we called them, in Lanka, to find out WHO is going to screw us, the Public, come next September. Important, though, to find a really good one (Palmist, I mean). Everyone knows that the general characteristics may be told by the shape, texture, and general lines of the hand ; and I shall endeavour to explain the most essential elements of that science, so that ANYONE can practise and acquire considerable knowledge of the character of another, without ...

A JUMBO CONFLICT- By Desmond Kelly “CONFLICTING VIEWS” (On a JUMBO CONFLICT) Now, taking the spotlight away from an American Enigma, and North Korean, Russian, & Chinese question marks!, we have “Breaking-bloody-news”(pardon the pun), from Sri Lanka. Several conflicting views, as a matter of fact, from various intelligent journalists of the “Daily Mirror”. As a confirmed “Animal-lover”, it would seem quite natural that I would have no conflicting views, whatsoever, on this subject, but I understand perfectly, that this huge, but beautiful animal, could sometimes be harmful to humans, raid their farms and territories, ruin their crops, etc.,as a matter of fact, it is now happening much more frequently. Still, this is quite reasonable to expect, as the population of this tiny Island increases every day, areas that are “home” to the elephant become much less “elephantine” (pardon the pun, again!), and, as such, Jumbo has no alternative but to ...

THE P.M. & THE POPE – By Des Kelly Both are very much in the news as I write this piece of “BREAKING NEWS” for eLankan readers in Australia at the moment, 90% of whom are sick to their back teeth, of what goes on, both in Canberra & Vatican-City right now. As regards to Prime Ministers, firstly, I know that, like me, quite a few of us were not too good at Arithmetic (in school), &, as such, it is difficult to keep track of how many P.M’s we have seen, come & go, recently. We elect them, hoping for the best, only to see them challenged for this “position” that, to my thinking, change even their young  “good looks” into wrinkled, pasty-faced individuals, sometimes even seeming to be on the verge of a nervous breakdown. If one was broke, homeless, downtrodden, unemployed & already depressed, I could well ...

MUSICAL EXCELLENCE – By Des Kelly   The Greek meaning of the word (arete), also perfectly fits the name Aretha (the Queen of Soul) as everyone calls her, died on the 16th of August, 2018, aged 76, of cancer, diagnosed eight years ago. Aretha Louise Franklin, was born on the 25th of March, 1942,in Tennessee, her father known simply as C.L. was a Baptist Minister, but her talent did come from her mother Barbra, who was also musically minded, but died while Aretha was still very young, leaving her dad to look after her. This, he did, and naturally the bond between father and daughter was very strong indeed. Aretha started her musical career with dad’s help, singing Gospel music, in Detroit, went on, from there, singing for anyone who would listen to her, and listen, they did, in rapture, hearing this obvious “Star” in the making, singing everything from ...

“LOOK AT US” – By Des Kelly Vincent Grant Gill, known world-wide as Vince Gill, is quite certainly on the apex of my “Country” hill of entertainers, born in America on the 12th of April, 1957, quite possibly started playing his guitar at a young age, started “composing” Country love songs, in his teens, and, even with tough competition, started his recording career when he was 21 years old, by which time,  he had also become a multi-instrumentalist, working solidly with his Country Rock Band “Pure Prairie League”during the 1970’s & later, as a “solo” Artiste, much in demand, both as a vocalist, duet singer & instrumentalist, backing many other “Greats” of that particular era. Vince Gill was an American, & my brief introduction (above), only goes to show how GOOD one has to be, in order to be recognized in Nashville, the “Country-Capital” of the World. Just like someone else, I personally ...
